My partner is planning to start using the Grimmory (ebook reader) instance I set up on our home network, when AO3 is back up. I suspect this has been a wake up call for a lot of fans that media is not safe in one centralized place.

Wasn't the point of AO3 that nowhere else was willing to host it?

No, just no corporate-owned users-as-a-product site. Millions of people are willing (and already do) host downloaded files from AO3 on their phones and computers. That's redundancy.

Seeing how fandom gets undone in less than three days because the content junkies can’t get their fix (and it’s gonna be 4 weeks) has been entertaining (not).

While some people have expressed the sentiment of “when AO3 is back we are going to tell the writers how much we missed them”, the majority response I’ve seen, as gauged on r/ao3 even, is “fuck you and your consent if you don’t get me my fix, I’m gonna pirate your fic upload it to Google for them to use them with AI”. Much of the fandom have literally revealed themselves to be techbros.

Do you think that this "majority response" is in any way representative of the user base on that site? Have you considered that the kind of person who responds like this is nothing but a very loud outlier?

  • That's why I said the majority response I've seen, and it's on those specific places which - yeah, are Reddit.

But an outlier being loud or not is not the issue. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and the fact that those """archives""" are made and people pass them around means people want them.

Do you think that every fic on ao3 is not already in AI training data?

  • No, but why would that matter? That's damage already done. I'm speaking about damage to do, and the kinds of people who care so little about those writers they can't "live with" that they would cause such damage.

Just because someone stole an item from your house, does not make it correct or fair for other people to invite themselves in and do the same.

restoration will take around two weeks, but could take up to a month

    That's a long time.

I'd rather they be thorough, and I expect their technical resources are a bit constrained. (Plus, I'm pretty sure the user-facing site is or was built in Ruby, and I have no idea what security best practices are for that.)

Realistically it can't take this long if the person working on it has knowledge required, it might be just a generous estimate or they are going for full backup restoration from some kind of very slow cold storage.

If we were talking about people for whom this was their job, I would agree that they were being way slow, but we're talking about a group of volunteers who're cramming this into their free time along with all their other obligations. In that situation, it sometimes takes as long as it takes.

I'm not saying that they aren't working hard, might be some other circumstances are preventing them from re-deploying/fixing it, in my experience with infrastructure work cutting single task into smaller chunks staggered over time actually makes it harder.

Again there are probably other factors there and it's not simple 're-deploy older version' kind of task.

What’s the deal with the hate for Wattpad?

We can still read it on the Wayback Machine, but yeah it's not the same if you want to write or read something new.

People seem to have strong feelings about Wattpad. What did they do?

As a reader, it's a bad experience finding anything but bad fanfic. When you finally do, it's a bad reading experience.

As a writer, it's too easy to get buried by bad fanfic, and the tools are absolute dogshit.

As a leftist, it's obvious that capitalist exploitation is underway, with enshittification progressing normally

That being said, it could be worse. If all you want is a place to post shit to have a link to share with bare minimum effort, it works well enough.

Could that website (404 media) be any worse?

Even with ublock it has multiple popups, most of the content is spread out past multiple different articles to try and get you to read something else.

    Atrocious.

Is it already an aftermath if AO3 is still down? For now I think it's a duringmath, or whatever.
