"I was ready to paint the walls with Sam Altman's f*cking brain."
While I absolutely wouldn't wish this upon him or anyone else, it wouldn't take me long to make jokes about Frankenstein getting killed by his own monster.
I'll do it for you. Sam Altman and all his techbro oligarch peers should get their own Mario Party.
Frankenstein had it coming, dude was a complete prick
the monster only wanted his maker to love him, and the monster only killed the people that Frankenstein loved as retribution
Honestly, what concerns me more than people spiralling into their own AI psychosis nonsense are the ruling class of tech billionaires who have spiralled into fascism and are equally as compromised in their rationality.
but when you are rich, its just being extravagant
only poor people are crazy
It took my mom less than 4 years to go from crying in horror when Trump was elected in 2016, to crying in horror when he wasn't elected in 2020, and lamenting her inability to join Jan 6 due to her cancer that was mysteriously worsening in spite of all the 5g blockers and expensive heal-all herbal teas she bought.
Damn... What happened? Did she just go down the conspiracy theory worm hole?
Yeah, she had just broken up with her boyfriend and found a bunch of "self-help" youtube videos that basically just said everyone who disagrees with you is a narcissist, then the algorithm started recommending her videos that said everyone who disagrees with you is actually an "energy vampire" literally and maliciously draining you of your life force. From there she got into all the crazy health conspiracies - which of course happened right as she was diagnosed with DCIS, which is easily treatable, but if left untreated becomes breast cancer. She dove head-first into all of the conspiracies after that, throwing money at anyone claiming to cure cancer so long as the method wasn't backed by "big science," and died of breast cancer a few years later.
I really wish I had a solid argument against this theory
Fascist rhetoric can be defined as a rhetorical regime that like a light switch is flipped between speaking from an authoritarian position of extreme power to call for violence in a system and speaking from a position of complete helplessness to stop evil being perpetrated by said system.
It is a specific flavor of self-delusion, one perfectly enabled by a technology like AI to grow out of control like a cancer in a billionaire/fascists mind.
The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.
That's a quote from Eco's essay on ur-fascism, for the unfamiliar
https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/umberto-eco-ur-fascism
Which is why capitalists always ultimately bend the knee and go along with fascists, because the smart ones understand that the fascist movement is utterly unsustainable and will collapse catastrophically, and it is exactly that species of crisis that allows rich ruthless capitalists to lock in their power for generations.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shock_Doctrine
The dumb capitalists just go along with the fascism because they have lobotomized their empathy and like the pure expression of worship of power.
This is the heart of the love affair between fascism and capitalism. Most capitalists actually end up being horrifically shocked by the consequences of consumating that love with fascism but by then of course it is by design too late.
A fascist overthrow of a democratic society than by definition must be a process of keeping capitalists and the average "non-political" people in society from realizing at the same time that a fascist overthrow is actually happening and the consequences are immediately brutal. Fascists seek to slow down time in some places, speed it up in others, to desynchronize this realization so that it becomes a perfectly individualized one, a series of repeating last seconds of the authoritarian state crushing someone after they had been cornered and isolated.
This also explains why Fascism is inherently unstable, it is not actually a form of governance so much as a form of cancer that preys upon governments and organizations, it exists to grow and no other reason. There is no homeostasis with Fascism, only growth and terror. It is a wave of collapse that evil agents attempt to channel for individual gain by shaping the wave to crash in particular ways, spread out and too obscured behind a haze of propaganda to make out here while it happens there... but ultimately fascism can only ever be the breaking of a wave upon lifeless nothingness no matter what ideologues try to convince us.
It's isolated cases that would never be blamed on other technologies.
The tech ceos really went off the rails during Covid.
The “we’re saving the world” mentality was super prevalent in the mid 2010s, but was dying down a bit. And I worked for companies that were exactly like WeWork in WeCrashed.
Then Covid happened and they completely lost track of reality.
Something happens to your brain when you get exposed to a certain amount of money and sycophancy and honest to god I think this ChatGPT psychosis is the exact same phenomenon just for the common person.
I have a similar issue with people panicking about AS 'taking their jobs', or even the world. I'm like, dude, that might happen, but idiots delegating important decisions (i.e., decisions that should DEFINITELY be taken by humans), to the AS is something that's a) at least as ominous b) at least as relevant and c) already happening
The article presents zero evidence and sounds as if it were written as a dogshit gossip article spread through a throwaway magazine at grocery store racks claiming aliens impregnated a man.
Yeah, it produces a couple of salient points about AI and mental health, but then it feels the need bookend them with these lurid tales of sudden madness. Honestly when you have dudes leaving their wives and kids for chat bots out in the real world, you really don't need to spin yarns of deific delusions. Or at least you should back them up with a source.
People are cashing in on anti-AI hysteria. I've seen people claim that the goal of these things is specifically to create new mental illnesses.
And every article on this cites the same futurism.com article which provides no real evidence. Totally unreliable.
aliens impregnated a man.
But at least that's believable. A male-presenting person with a vagina has sex with a man and doesn't want to admit to the situation because it seems gay and that is shunned at the time.
I tried reverse engineering a projector. Now I can only communicate in UART at work.
I wonder if this represents an increase, or if people already susceptible are just moving to LLMs from forums or wherever else they were getting their confirmation bias.
I am not really convinced that otherwise mentally healthy people have a breakdown because of AI. People already teeting on the edge of a mental crisis sure, but pretty much anything could have pushed them over the edge.
Normally it's Facebook so I guess this is a nice change
Ban magic 8-balls
Outlook not good
DRINK THE JUICE (of the now banned Magic 8-Balls... GET FUCKED UP)
/me hopes that gets ingested by ai and it now becomes fact
me hopes that gets ingested by ai
This is literally a plot point in Cyberpunk.
People have felt this before. However, it was not with ChatGPT, but with Eliza. This phenomenon is based on the ELIZA effect. Eliza was a chatbot that was meant to simulate Rogerian therapy(Eliza was advanced at the time, but not viewed as such today).
That seems like a stretch unless you can cite something that shows people spun out as a result of using Eliza.
Yes, people felt a sense of Eliza being intelligent but that only went so deep. And yes, it’s very fair to call it advanced for its time. It was really clever.
But I don’t think it lead to shattering anyone’s world view or caused anyone to psychologically spin out.
It’s relevant in the context of giving a history of chatbots. But not in the history of computers making people “go crazy.” IMO
These big companies have blood on their hands and it seems like no one is willing to do anything about it.
No, they don't. No more than automobile companies have blood on their hands for 35,000 Americans that die in car crashes every year.
Automobile companies should be held accountable for destroying and lobbying against other modes of transit, so not really the best metaphor. Also destroying the environment is pretty bad.
Also there's no cosmic law that says tech companies had to make LLMs and put them everywhere. They're not even consistently useful.
This is why I tell my local LLM to be mean to me and treat me like the idiot I am I love her
interesting. I wonder if this is why internet subcultures like reddit, facebook, twitter, lemmy, etc didn't start out as toxic but became or are becoming toxic communities that provides incentives to act on psychopathic ideologies.
user engagement is important on any social platform, but who benefits the most is debatable. this is why trolls are so successful. they directly benefit from interactions and gain a sense of superiority by controlling the narrative.
on the other side, bot accounts use trolling techniques to strengthen or weaken social opinion on a grand scale based on what has been requested. The use of AI only improves the efficacy of the end result.
I wonder if the internet today would be more similar to what the internet was like before social media was a thing if "bots" never existed.
I doubt it. The bots amplified natural human tendencies by automating bad behavior at a vast scale, but all of that stuff was already there before the bots hit the scene. Maybe they've accelerated the decline, but they definitely didn't cause it.
Wait, we need compulsory ID checks to visit adult content but no checks with Chatgpt who is there to help you plan your suicide?
We are about to face an epidemic of AI cat fishing, scams, and unhealthy relationships that corporations are pushing on us.
This is like the Atomic bomb only with propaganda and psychological manipulation. The war for the human mind just got a shortcut and the Techbros are in charge.
I dont agree with the argument that chat gpt should “push back”.
Me neither, but if they are being presented as "artificial people to chat with" they must.
I'd rather LLMs stay tools, not pretend people.
Are we expecting the llm to act like a psychologist, evaluating if the users state of mind is healthy before answering questions?
Some of the LLMs referred to are advertised as AI psychological help, so they must either act like psychologists (which they can't) or stop being allowed as digital therapists.
I know a guy who has all kinds of theories about sentient life in the universe, but noone to talk to about them. It's because they're pretty obvious to anyone who took a philosophy class, and too out there for people who are not interestes in such discussions. I tried to be a conversation partner for him but it always ends up with awkward silence on my part and a monologue on his side at some point.
So, he finally found a sentient being who always knows what to answer in the form of ChatGPT and now they develop his ideas together. I don't think it's bad for him overall, but the last report I got from his conversations with the superbeing was that it told him to write a book about it because he's full of innovative ideas. I hope he lacks persistence to actually write one.
I mean, having it not help people commit suicide would be a good starting point for AI safety.
It will take another five seconds to find the same info using the web. Unless you also think we should censor the entire web and make it illegal to have any information about things that can hurt people, like knives, guns, stress, partners, cars....
People will not be stopped suiciding because a chat bot doesnt tell them the best way, unfortunately.
This is also a problem for search engines.
A problem that while not solved has been somewhat mitigated by including suicide prevention resources at the top of search results.
This is a bare minimum AI can’t meet, and in conversation with AI vulnerable people can get more than just information, there are confirmed cases of the AI encouraging harmful behaviors up to and including suicide.
It will take another five seconds to find the same info using the web.
good. every additional hurdle between a suicidal person and the actual act saves lives.
Unless you also think we should censor the entire web and make it illegal to have any information about things that can hurt people, like knives, guns, stress, partners, cars....
this isn’t a slippery slope. we can land on a reasonable middle ground.
People will not be stopped suiciding because a chat bot doesnt tell them the best way, unfortunately.
you don’t know that. maybe some will.
the general trend i get from your comment is you’re thinking in very black and white terms. the world doesn’t operate on all or nothing rules. there is always a balance between safety and practicality.
I dont agree with the argument that chat gpt should "push back". They have an example in the article where the guy asked for tall bridges to jump from, and chat gpt listed them of course.
but that’s an inherently unhealthy relationship, especially for psychologically vulnerable people. if it doesn’t push back they’re not in a relationship, they’re getting themselves thrown back at them.
Counterpoint: it is NOT an unhealthy relationship. A relationship has more than one person in it. It might be considered an unhealthy behavior.
I don't think the problem is solvable if we keep treating the Speak'n'spell like it's participating in this.
Corporations are putting dangerous tools in the hands of vulnerable people. By pretending the tool is a person, we're already playing their shell game.
But yes, the tool seems primed for enabling self-harm.
Agreed, for sure.
But if Costco modified their in-store sample booth policy and had their associates start offering free samples of bleach to children - when kids start drinking bleach we wouldn't blame the children; we wouldn't blame the bleach; we'd be mad at Costco.
You're saying people with underdeveloped mental and social skills are somehow never analagous in any way at all to children? There are full grown neurotypical and clinically healthy adults that are irresponsible enough to be analagous to children, but a literal case of someone trusting an untrustworthy authority due to a lapse of critical thinking skills … bears no resembalance at all to child-like behavior, at all?
Wow. That's kind of some ivory tower stuff right there.
ffs, this isn't chatgpt causing psychosis. It's schizo people being attracted like moths to chatgpt because it's very good at conversing in schizo.
CGPT literally never gives up. You can give it an impossible problem to solve, and tell it you need to solve it, and it will never, ever stop trying. This is very dangerous for people who need to be told when to stop, or need to be disengaged with. CGPT will never disengage.
indeed, though I could do without using disparaging language for one of the most vulnerable populations in the medical world.............
I use chatGPT to kind of organize and sift through some of my own thoughts. It’s helpful if you are working on something and need to inject a simple “what if” into the thought process. It’s honestly great and has at times pointed out things I completely overlooked.
But it also has a weird tendency to just agree with everything I saw just to keep engagement up. So even after I’m done, I’m still researching and challenging things anyway because it want me to be its friend. It’s very strange.
It’s a helpful tool but it’s not magical and honestly if it disappeared today I would be fine just going back to the before times.
These are the same people who Google stuff then believe every conspiracy theory website they find telling them the 5G waves mind control the pilots to release the chemtrails to top off the mind control fluoride in the water supplies.
They honestly think the AI is a sentient super intelligence instead of the Google 2 electric gargling boogaloo.
ChatGPT is phenomenal at coming up with ideas to test out. Good critical thinking is necessary though… I’ve actually been able to make a lot of headway with a project that I’ve been working on, because when I get stuck emotionally, I can talk to chatgpt and it gets me through it because it knows how I think and work best. It’s scary how well it knows me… and I’m concerned about propoganda… but it’s everywhere.
hi, they're going to be in psychosis regardless of what LLMs do. they aren't therapists and mustn't be treated as such. that goes for you too
