Me who hasn’t played in 3 months: look at what they need to mimic a fraction of our power

Sony already has their money and folks ain't cancelling ps plus so not sure what boycotters hope to accomplish here.

Maybe people should do this with the subscription instead.

If people would stop whining about how boycotts aren't gonna work and actually tried for once, maybe you'd see a different result. If you actually give a shit about this, stop spreading the message about how it's hopeless, and start telling Sony to kick rocks.

Just a week? PlayStation has been a predatory service for over a decade now. Ever since they started charging you a yearly fee to play with your friends, they entered into the “evil company” territory. I’ll play single player games on my PS5, but I can’t justify buying a multiplayer game for PlayStation when Steam lets me play for free with my friends, at a much better price point.

  • [–] 1 point 3 months ago (2 children)

Cynical take: this will achieve absolutely nothing, but I’m sure the half dozen people who actually boycott (rather that just saying they will) will feel really good about themselves after.

What is with the condescending take on it? Giving up is certainly not doing anything useful for yourself either. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. But giving up from the start because you think it's hopeless is a sure fire way to lose. It's not about feeling good about myself, it's about not letting them take away our choice. I'm gonna fight for our choice, and you should too. You can be cynical and still try.

Yeah. People would have to actually start buying massive amounts of physical games and probably a blackout as well plus other forms of protest to get Sony to reconsider and even then I don't think they're going to do that.

They literally have a social media blackout right now because they're hoping if they ignore the news long enough people will forget.

So after Pablo Torre did two episodes on the EA College Football 27 boycott and microtransaction reversal, playstation fans decided on the most toothless way to show their displeasure. Brilliant.

The best protest is not to buy their next console.

Or their current one, as well as any new games.

Current one already sold huge amount and console entered into its end of lifecycle anyway. Most who purchased it did already. So all is left is the next one. I mean lot of people won't buy it for high price anyway, so there is more or less only the hardcore fans adopting the console early. But if they don't buy it either, then the console will fail. But... this only works if other consoles have a disk drive (or cartridges).

Oh lol, sorry I thought that was a abbreviation. I agree with you, most people probably will buy anyway. Compared to the blackout protest to not play what you already own, its "easier" to not buy an extremely expensive new hardware. Maybe existing Playstation owners could instead invest their money to other eco systems and expand, instead buying the new next generation console from Sony. We will see.

Shame I don't have a PS5 so I can't protest. I'm glad I chose to abandon all consoles this generation though. All three players are utter scum at this point.

As someone who basically put all my eggs into the PS5 as my console to do a physical collection for I am incredibly disappointed with this.

I wouldn't have cared whatsoever if they said PS6 is digital only. Wouldn't have bought a digital only console regardless.

But the idea that a game from a series I have collected for that comes out after 2028 won't have a disc is such a bummer.

I'm still coping they reverse the decision but I don't think thats likely. That or just let the random limited print companies continue to do their thing for the few people left who care?

Since I doubt Sony will ever push the blu-ray spec beyond 100GB. It would have been nice to at least have a cart style option since storage on flash/nand storage isn't the issue it was back in the N64 days when CDs and DVDs stored more for less cost. AI stuff fucking prices and supply aside, it seems like prices for them would have made enough sense. Also seems like it would be less complicated than still having optical drives.

Ranting mostly about media beyond physical game releases below.

Also kind of seems that physical releases of TV and movies could have adapted carts for uncompressed 1080p/2160p. Don't get me wrong, I love the vibe of optical discs (even with their faults). Just hate that everything is almost completely download (for games) and streaming (for video) only. Non-game media is more frustrating since most set-top players don't have the DRM-ed periodic phone-home download options that phones and tablets have.

Might as well just make sure it is fully powered off and unplugged so it can't update in low power mode. If it hasn't been updated, it might be useful later on if an exploit is found allowing CFW. I haven't paid attention to the scene much, but old OFW tend to give the best options if found. Only "downside" is online stuff unless options have been found for per-game private servers.

After I got a YLOD and learned none of my games would work on PS4, I signed back in to my Steam account, only to find the games I've bought more than 20 years ago.

    Valve has earned my trust.

A boycott against ps6 would scare them much more.

Yeah, a PS5 you own is a sunk cost, and new tech isn't cheap - it makes sense to keep using what you have, although canceling PS Plus would be a good start before not getting a PS6.

I notice they chose August when September is the month that all the games that were scared to release near GTA6 come out. That would be far more effective if they wanted to send a message.

A protest by gamers who are worried about the sunk cost is less effective than one where Sony is worried about their sunk cost.

It's not so much "worried" about the sunk cost, it's simple practicality - you already have a PS5, might as well use it. Just don't give Sony money for PS Plus or buy any of their future consoles. If most people cancelled their PS Plus accounts, I guarantee Sony would notice far more than a week-long blackout. But they won't.

I mean, I support their direction and efforts, I’m just doubtful they’ll manage a large movement.

This is a really sad time not to have large competitors. Could be at the least they move to Nintendo in protest - sadly I wouldn’t join that as I hate Nintendo for other reasons, and they’re not much better in terms of digital carts.

Are these the same fans willing to part with $100 for new releases? Not holding my breath lol.

This is akin to the "boycotts" people have done against gas stations for high fuel costs. It doesn't work. It's always like "on a Tuesday, don't buy gas"... but you weren't going to until Friday anyway. And then you buy it on Friday, the books balance exactly the same, and there is zero actual impact.

You want to impact Sony? Stop buying games on PS5. Not for a week. For this entire console generation.

  • [–] 8 points 3 months ago (3 children)

    This is so ridiculous.

    1. I, personally, want discs - or at least real ownership - of games to continue. In the past I bought almost all my games used.
    2. That doesn’t matter. Most people - even those who know the current trade-offs - would rather ‘buy’ digital games. Physical sales are a tiny fraction of game sales. With a purely financial head on: it’s going to cost Sony more to continue having them than to stop production. You can’t fight it (or, at least, the fight is unwinnable).

The only winnable fight here - and I still think it’s a long shot - is convincing governments to legislate to allow download of and resale of digital purchases.

Especially being as physical discs are just a download key these days anyway.

I went out of my way to get the ps5 with a disc drive, I've used it exactly once. But it is nice to know its there.

A lot of people parrot that, but it's not really true, at least on PlayStation. The vast majority of PlayStation games are playable from disc without any internet connection. Of course, you won't have the latest updates and the game may have more bugs and worse performance if you aren't connected to the internet, but you can still play games to their completion.

I know that from a legal standpoint you still only buy a licence and don't legally own the data on a disc, but that doesn't really matter for the purposes of playing a game. You can play when the servers are down. You can play when your account gets hacked or deactivated. They don't have a way to take the game away when you aren't connected to the internet (even if they can legally revoke it).

And even if it would be "just a download key", it's still a key that's transferrable and that you can share or sell. So in terms of ownership it's still much better than a fully digital license even if you completely ignore the fact that it's still storage media that apart from a few exceptions still contains a fully functional copy of the game.

For me personally all my games I play on Playstation are on disc, and I bought them all used. For me the discs are the reason to get a console. I live in an area where one ISP has a monopoly so I have to live with a datacap too small to be able to download even a single modern game, and datacap expansions frequently being more expensive than the game I'd download with them. And on the used market the games can be pretty cheap. So all my games on PlayStation are on disc, and I bought most of them used.
If discs are not available for a game, then I pretty much always can get the game way cheaper on PC than on the PlayStation store, and on my PC it'll run better too, so then I have no reason to buy it on PlayStation instead.
But I do realise I'm a minority in that regard, at least when you look at global scale.
