I'm probably not the best person to answer, I only really got into this 3 years ago when I took a chance on setting up a lemmy server, and I have learned so so much (and am clearly still learning based on the intrusion!).

There are great tools and resources, but the biggest challenge has been finding people to help who actually know what they're doing for when I inevitably break something. Gazby has saved Lemmy quite a few times when something stupid has happened.

There always seems another layer to it too, you think you understand something and it turns out it goes deeper. So many different technologies and services interacting together. I'd hate to think what a real sysadmin has to go though each day!

Yeah, its a super niche issue I think, exacerbated by the fact we insert community blocks for all new users, which further impacted on how badly postgres struggled with it. Schwim had 10ish communities also that he had blocked personally, but we had since banned the mods of from .zip, and the way lemmy handles these is basically to hide them from the user in the blocked communties screen, hence the ghost-blocks, so all around it was just a mess. Thankfully such a simple* fix.

*It took hours and hours and hours.

Yes, me messing with the DB config to try and prevent loads of micro-crashes (if that's such a thing). You can see it starts to ease up then, but the drops are further crashes (and also me restarting the db for various things).

Traffic spike is probably redditors finding a new home!

    Hello all,

After last month's very small update, I think I am making up for it with what will probably be amongst the longest ones I've written yet. In order to make it somewhat readable, I've used spoiler tags for the general Piefed and Lemmy updates, please uncollapse them to read the juicy details.

    General server updates:

A little while ago I made some updates to the "old" frontends (mlmym) at old.lemmy.zip and old.piefed.zip. These included massive performance improvements and fixes. Recently, local legend @Blaze@piefed.zip has also been helping out, adding LOADS of features to the piefed version. If you're looking for a familiar but powerful alternative to the old reddit interface, definitely check out old.piefed.zip.

The Button just finished its 6th season (a Halloween themed season) - you can read more about how it went here.

Finally, we'll be doing some feedback collection soon. It has been quite a while since we did our last one, but given how much things have changed, I think it is well worth doing it again. We will let you know when it is ready.

PS hello to all you ex-redditors who have found your way here. Please do reach out if you need anything!

tl;dr - Piefed.zip was hit by a Cryptominer during an update, account sessions were invalidated and passwords reset. No data known to have been taken.

PiefedOn the 24th October (heading into the 25th) Piefed.zip underwent scheduled maintenance to update to the latest version, including a full server update. At the time, it all appeared to work fine and Piefed.zip came back up as expected. On the 26th, Piefed started reporting cron job errors (A cron job is an automated, time-based task scheduled to run on the server):

Some cron tasks have not been run recently:

daily_maintenance (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-24 03:18 UTC),

send_missed_notifs (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

process_email_bounces (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

clean_up_old_activities (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:01 UTC),

send_queue (expected every None, last run at 2026-10-26 12:05 UTC)

At the same time, checking the server performance we saw the CPU was being maxed out:

(please excuse the crappy mobile screenshot)

This was obviously unexpected. At this point my suspicion was a cron job had stuck in some unexpected way and caused the cpu to just shit the bed, but checking docker showed another error when attempting to initialise container security filters. Specifically, libseccomp reported an effective API level of 1 despite the installed library meeting the version requirements for the requested functionality.

This behaviour was inconsistent with the expected capabilities of the server. Further investigation here led to the discovery of unauthorised processes and persistence mechanisms.

(Although interference from malicious software is a possible explanation, the investigation did not establish a direct causal relationship between the malware and the seccomp failures.)

At this point I took the piefed and infrastructure stacks we use offline, and started trying to figure out what was going on.

Based on the hidden artifacts and persistence mechanisms, I was able to tie this to perfctl, which is a stealthy, persistent Linux malware family designed primarily for cryptomining (XMRIG Monero miners).

This then led to looking for the attack vector. It is known for targetting exposed portainer agents (usually port 9001) and sure enough we had an exposed portainer agent.

We (over 12 months ago) used portainer to manage our servers without needing to ssh in to them. It should have been removed from all our servers a long time ago, however on the piefed server the old portainer agent container was stopped but not deleted. At some point during the maintenance this has been restarted by mistake, and it looks like it was brought up in its default state. Regardless of this, the fact this could ever happen is totally my fault and all blame lies at my feet for not tidying up properly.

So now we knew the attack vector and that the attack took place sometime on the 24th leading into the 25th (based on the graphs first showing the cpu maxing out, it was the early hours of the 25th).

At this point both INeedMana and myself were able to start a system restore process. Luckily Hetzner provides a really really handy backup system, and we reimaged the server with a backup from the 22nd, and were able to reapply our encrypted offsite database backup to the server. We also redid the updates, and obviously made sure perfctl was not present on the backup from the 22nd, which it was not.

While we can't see any evidence that anything touched the piefed database that shouldn't have, we have changed every single key on the server and in our infrastructure, and we invalidated everyone's passwords by setting them to null

docker compose exec -T db \
      psql -U piefed -d piefed -v ON_ERROR_STOP=1 <<'SQL'
    BEGIN;

    UPDATE public.user
    SET password_hash = NULL
    WHERE instance_id = 1
      AND password_hash IS NOT NULL;

    COMMIT;
    SQL

By setting them to null, Piefed very handily forces the user to reset. Our other option was to generate new passwords for everyone, but this felt more intuitive, or at least the least confusing option of two bad options.

We also reset the secret key that validates logged in sessions, so this forced everyone to log out too, hence they would have to reset their password.

We also redid the firewall, beefing it up an awful lot (unclear if this would have helped with this, but worth it anyway), redid the docker networking away from the piefed default to be more compartmentalised and hopefully secure, and reviewed the whole networking stack. There is still management software, but this is restricted to just a VPN connection and not accessible externally, which has been stress tested - it will fail-secure should the VPN not work.

Massive shout of thanks from myself to INeedMana for jumping in and spending hours fixing this with me, guiding me, and putting up with my stress and panic!

We will keep monitoring going forwards, and let everyone know if we have any further concerns, but it does look like it is resolved now.

Oh and after all that we did manage to update Piefed too :)

tl;dr - removal of UK geoblock, application changes, improved ban notice, performance improvements etc.

    lemmy.zip

I've been having a good old play with Lemmy to tweak it to how I want it, but not too much as 1.0 is coming up.. soon..

Anyway, some of you may have been around here long enough to remember that back at the beginning of 2025 (almost 2 years ago now!) we had to block the UK to comply with the very draconian and only getting worse Online Safety Act (because I am a UK citizen sadly).

Mainly, this is because there is no way to prevent children from accessing NSFW content in Lemmy. Now, I've been able to add a complete an unremovable block on NSFW content on UK users. Is it ideal? No. Is it something I agree with? Also no. Does it allow us to accept UK users back on Lemmy.zip? Probably..? I need to do more digging, but for now UK users can once again sign up, they just can't turn on NSFW content. Sorry about that. You'll have to get your particularly saucy ankle pictures elsewhere.

Users in the UK attempting to turn on NSFW will instead see this:

And UK users going directly to NSFW content will see this instead:

I have also recently added a minimum character length to the Lemmy.zip registrations for the answer. You've pretty much all filled one in if you're on Lemmy.zip, but what you don't see is the amount of people who type stuff such as "lemme in" or "aldkasdkjas" or stuff like that. So, now users have to enter 50 characters to not be auto-rejected. We still read every single one before approving though, we just turn those away that can't be bothered filling it in.

I have also added an improved ban message when a banned user tries to log in. Normal Lemmy just pops up a little message saying can't log in, now the user gets a full on warning:

Hopefully you never see that screen, but at least you know it exists now :)

I did also fix .avif images not opening in-line, although this has since been backported by the devs into 0.19.21 so I hope to anything almighty I stop getting complaints about avif images (just need some outdated apps to finally support them!).

I also dropped some very specific local performance improvements into lemmy, including a very detailed and overly complex (for me) bug between postgres and lemmy that was affecting schwim (one our admins) and I'm sure others out there.

I will try and explain it to you, while also explaining back to myself.

When you scroll to page 2 of a feed like All/New, lemmy says “give me the next 25 posts after the last one I showed.” The way it phrased that to the database was one big combined comparison, roughly “find posts that come after (this pinned-status, this score, this timestamp, this ID)” all bundled into a single tuple comparison.

    Example tuple comparison:
(featured, score, published, id) < (last post's featured, score, published, id)

Here’s where Postgres does the database equivalent of confidently walking into a glass door. When it sees a bundled comparison like that, its query planner (the bit that decides how to actually fetch the rows) only bothers to look at the first column in the tuple to guess how many rows will match. The first column was featured (i.e. is this post pinned?). And the comparison effectively asked for posts where featured < false.

Nothing is less than false. False is the bottom. So Postgres looked at that, went “ah, this will match approximately... one row, maybe zero,” and picked a strategy optimised for returning a tiny handful of results.

Except it was about to return thousands.

So now Postgres is running a plan designed for a teaspoon of data against an ocean of it. To make it worse, lemmy.zip users have community block filters (including ghost-blocks left clinging to communities that were removed, the digital equivalent of a restraining order against someone who already moved away). Those filters nudged the planner toward sorting every single older post in the feed from scratch, every time someone clicked “next page.”

    The damage:

40 to 100 seconds per page load. Per request. Page two. ~14 GB of temporary files spewed onto disk, because it couldn’t sort that much in memory, so it wrote the overflow to disk and sorted it there. Repeatedly. For a button click. The fix (anticlimactically small, as the best ones are): instead of cramming featured into the bundled comparison and letting Postgres faceplant, we just say up front, “we’re past the pinned posts now, so filter featured = false,” and then only bundle-compare the columns that actually matter (score, time, ID). Same posts. Same order. Postgres now estimates correctly, picks a sane plan, and the results:

~25 milliseconds. Down from up to 100,000.

That’s roughly a 4,000× speedup from telling the database something it technically already knew but was too proud to figure out on its own. No migration, no schema change, no new features, just one clause moved so the query planner would stop hallucinating.

The downside is if the amount of pinned posts spills over on to page 2, then it wouldn't show them. However we've had at most like 3 pinned posts at once... so that is very unlikely to happen.

For mods, I am also looking at implementing more robust moderation reports for us. Currently admins resolving reports interferes with mods resolving reports, so I am working on a resolution to that, at least until 1.0 is here and changes how reports work.

One more thing I've added, once a user does sign up, they should now get this pop up:

It is an attempt to at least explain how the process works. Hopefully it helps?!

    Donations

Lemmy and Piefed are not reddit. We don't collect and sell your information. We don't serve adverts. We dont make you the product. Unlike all big tech, we truly are the product here, not you. This is about as close to free as you can get these days.

However, running servers is getting more and more expensive. You may have heard of this "AI" thing going around, and it keeps driving prices up. The cost of the Piefed server has almost doubled in a matter of months. The lemmy server is already an expensive beast, and that isn't going to get any cheaper either. The cost of hosting images, purchasing domains, creating and storing offsite backups, heck even having reliable email all adds up.

So far, we have been incredibly fortunate to be funded by donations. But the costs do keep increasing. Therefore if you are coming here and enjoying it here, please please please consider a donation. It doesn't have to be a big one. If everyone who read this donated $1 we'd be sorted for months. If everyone set up a recurring monthly $1 we'd be sorted for years.

Please do support independent platforms (who spend their spare time running services for you for free) with a small donation if you can.

Oh, and we're not just a random guy behind a computer screen. Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip are a non profit organisation - DotZip Ltd. We're here for the long haul, because we care about a free and open internet.

Here are some options if you can donate:

    Please Don’t Be a Lurker!

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip isn’t money, praise, or an autographed picture of yourself completing a skydive. Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or just post the same meme of a disappointed cat over and over and over and over and over and over and over and so on.. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession. (We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

Right so that tops off an incredibly busy October. I am sure I have forgotten something (I should really write interesting stuff down) but that covers the main points.

All I have left to say is RIP Sir Patrick Stewart.

    Season 6: Halloween Night

31 October 18:00 to 1 November 18:00 UTC · Winner: The Violet Hour Coven (purple)

Halloween Night was a single 24-hour season. Four covens fought to hold the button. Every second their coven held the button it earned points, scaled by a shared lantern that the whole street kept alight by trick-or-treating. Around the button sat a street of thirteen doors, a Haunted House that opened when eight knockers gathered, coven cauldrons that turned sugar into hexes, a Trick-or-Treat Book of stamps, and a hidden cipher called the unreadable page.

The Violet Hour won by about 760 points. They took the lead around 06:00 and never lost it. Sebas made the final press at 18:00:00, with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.

    At a glance

Players signed up 80 (69 in a coven, 11 without one)
    Played trick-or-treat 64
    Pressed the button 62
Button presses 250 (188 of them used a Skeleton Key)
    Door knocks 16,518
Treats handed out 12,529 (and 3,810 tricks)
Light given to the lantern 20,920
Haunted House openings 22 of a possible 23
Skeleton Keys 160 (68 from doors, 22 from the Haunted House, 70 bought with sugar)
    Hex votes opened / hexes cast / hexes warded 90 / 24 / 0
Book stamps 2,745, collected by 68 players
    Full Trick-or-Treat Books 1 (gwaer)
    Unreadable page solved 4 players
Chat messages 4,676 across Main, the Street Log, four coven chats and Mod

    Final standings

Coven Points Clock time holding the button Presses Members
    🥇 The Violet Hour Coven (purple) 5,559 8h 02m 84 20
    🥈 The Hedgewitch Coven (green) 4,799 6h 45m 57 16
    🥉 The Blood Moon Coven (red) 3,769 4h 56m 64 17
    4 The Drowned Coven (blue) 3,202 4h 15m 45 13

First press: patrickyaa (Hedgewitch), seven seconds after the start. Last press: sebas (Violet Hour) at 18:00:00. Longest single hold: sebas, 55 minutes from 05:08. Next came ekwen at 42 minutes from 13:23, then moin at 38 minutes from 08:07.

How the lead moved (clock time held, by the hour)

    Time (UTC) Leader Order
19:00 Violet Violet, Drowned, Blood Moon, Hedgewitch
21:00 Blood Moon takes over Blood Moon, Violet, Drowned, Hedgewitch
00:00 Blood Moon Blood Moon, Violet, Drowned, Hedgewitch
03:00 Blood Moon, well clear Blood Moon 198 min, Hedgewitch 115 min
06:00 Violet takes over Violet, Blood Moon, Hedgewitch, Drowned
11:00 Violet Violet, Hedgewitch, Blood Moon, Drowned
18:00 Violet Violet, Hedgewitch, Blood Moon, Drowned

Blood Moon led the evening and most of the night. Their chat went quiet after about 03:00, and between 05:00 and 15:00 they held the button for only about twenty minutes. Violet's overnight shift, mostly sebas and svc, used keys to hold long stretches through the small hours. Hedgewitch climbed steadily through the day into second.

    The covens

    The Violet Hour (purple), winners

The biggest coven, with 20 members, and the best organised.

    • svc ran tactics, explained the rules to newcomers and welcomed every new member.
    • gwaer timed the Haunted House, did the points maths and filled the whole Book.
    • sebas was the top knocker (1,280 knocks, 999 treats) and top presser (14), and made the last press.
    • Also: bevsdad, squirrel, dominikmoos, gerudo, ekwen, m_f (first to read the page), tastysoup, tribut, errorcode.

Their plan was to take the button only from Blood Moon, Snuff the leader, save keys for the end and trade hexes for stamps. They cast 9 hexes from only 12 votes, by far the best vote rate of any coven, and filled the biggest pot (1,275 sugar from 17 givers). Morale stayed high all night.

    The Hedgewitch Coven (green), second

    The comeback coven.

    • macallan was second in knocks (1,201) and treats (928), pressed 13 times, and welcomed new players all day.
    • demigodrick played here too, and joked about "critical green-winning" fixes.
    • Also: patrickyaa (first press), cannedtuna, vatlark (two 30-minute-plus holds in the morning), almost1337, bobtimus_prime.

They were often last in the evening, then climbed steadily through the day into a clear second.

The Blood Moon Coven (red), third

Loud, theatrical and the evening's leaders.

    • comradepupivy led the cheering and the cauldron giving.
    • snoopy knocked 1,106 times and led the coven's push for stamps.
    • frightfulpleasance read the standings closely.
    • sneezycat worked the ciphers all day.
    • tikiporch worked the overnight shift.

Every other coven aimed at them: 11 of the night's 24 hexes struck Blood Moon. Their chat thinned out after 03:00, and they opened 34 hex votes, the most of any coven, but cast only 5.

    The Drowned Coven (blue), fourth

The smallest coven, with 13 members.

    • w3dd1e began the night as blue's only member, and coached newcomers.
    • Also: needanke, monkey, deebster, terrance, moin (a 39-minute hold at 08:07), its_prolly_fine, railway692.

Their cauldron problem was that votes needed three voters, and blue rarely had three awake. They opened 22 votes and cast only 4 hexes. Even so, they were hexed only once all night.

    The systems

    The button

There was one press per player per day, plus Skeleton Keys as bonus presses. Keys turned out to be the real currency: 188 of the 250 presses used one. Presses were busiest at the start (26 between 18:00 and 19:00) and at the end (32 between 17:00 and 18:00). Between 02:00 and 14:00 there were often fewer than ten an hour.

    Trick-or-treat

There were 16,518 knocks, spread almost evenly over the twelve doors (about 1,230 to 1,310 each).

    Tier Count Light
    Common 7,280 4,000
    Uncommon 2,918 4,248
    Rare 1,538 5,563
    Epic (Full-Size Bar) 535 4,641
    Legendary (King-Size Bar, Skeleton Key) 258 2,468
    Tricks 3,810 0

The nine tricks came up about equally often, between 390 and 461 times each. Spooky font was the most common and Ghostwriter the least.

    Costumes, by number of players:

    • Skeleton: 29. It was the clear favourite, and 11 of the top 12 knockers wore it.
    • Pumpkinhead: 15
    • Black Cat: 10
    • Sheet Ghost: 8
    • Mummy: 6

    Top hauls

    Player Coven Treats Light
    sebas Violet 999 1,080
    macallan Hedgewitch 928 993
    snoopy Blood Moon 866 1,189
    svc Violet 809 1,126
    gwaer Violet 583 810

    The lantern

The lantern ran almost full for the first four hours, between 940 and 1,000. It sank through the night to a low of 226 around 07:00. It recovered through the afternoon and finished between 790 and 910. The average was 684 and it never went out.

    The Haunted House

The Haunted House opened every hour from 19:00 to 16:00, 22 times, with between 8 and 26 visitors.

    Key winners:

    • Twice: snoopy, bevsdad, vatlark, gwaer, demigodrick.
    • Once: squirrel, dominikmoos, comradepupivy, dosdude, frightfulpleasance, drworm, railway692, sebas, tribut, tastysoup, needanke, idealotus.

    The cauldron and hexes

Coven Votes opened Hexes cast Sugar into the pot Givers Hexes suffered
    Violet 12 9 1,275 17 8
    Hedgewitch 22 6 870 13 4
    Blood Moon 34 5 631 13 11
    Drowned 22 4 590 10 1

By type, the 24 hexes cast were 13 Snuff, 4 Fog, 4 Silence and 3 Toll.

    Keys and the sweet shop

Keys came from three places: 68 from the doors (No. 13), 22 from the Haunted House draw, and 70 bought with sugar. Each player's first key cost 300 sugar, and each one after cost 100 more.

The biggest buyers were macallan and sebas (5 each), then svc, gwaer and frightfulpleasance (4 each).

    The Trick-or-Treat Book

    • 68 players collected 2,745 stamps of 61 kinds.
    • gwaer filled every page, the only full Book of the season.
    • svc and sneezycat each finished with 60 stamps.
    • Late in the day, covens arranged to hex each other so both sides could earn the hex stamps.

    The unreadable page (the ARG)

The page came in three parts, revealed at 18:00, 02:00 and 10:00. An opening clue linked to a video, and each part sat under its own chain of ciphers with a key from the same theme.

    Order Player Coven Time
    1 m_f Violet 10:56
    2 gwaer Violet 16:48
    3 svc Violet 16:52
    4 sebas Violet 17:58

All four solvers were from the winning coven.

If you want to know what the answers were to the puzzle, I've put them in the spoiler below

    spoilerHow it’s set up

An opening clue sits above part 1. It’s shown once the night begins. Part 1 appears at the start of the night, part 2 a third of the way through, and part 3 at two thirds. The answer box only opens in the final third.

    Opening clue

The visible hint is “pick a coven”. The text under it is encrypted with the key word Hedgewitch. Undo the base64, then undo the Vigenère cipher with “Hedgewitch”. It reads: “Looking for a puzzle clue? / Try this video:” and links a YouTube video (0tdyU_gW6WE).

Part 1, “she keeps a candle” (key “bustin”; undo these in order)

base64 reverse the string base32 Vigenère with “bustin”

Part 2, “for the one who” (key “stay-puft”)

base64 Atbash ROT47 read as hex XOR the bytes with “stay-puft”

Part 3, “never knocks” (key “ghostbusters”)

read as hex ROT13 base64, which gives a string of digits read the digits as Morse: 1 is a dot, 0 is a dash, 2 is a gap between letters, 3 is a gap between words Vigenère with “ghostbusters”

Answer: “she keeps a candle for the one who never knocks”

All those clues were part of the youtube video.

    Conclusion

Hope you all enjoyed S6! It was a mini-season, with lots of new things added and improvements to various bits and pieces. I kept it short because Halloween is only a day, and I also didn't feel the mechanics were there to support it much longer than that.

It would be great now that we're a couple of seasons in, if you could let me know the bits you've enjoyed from each season, what worked well and what you'd like to see come back. Designing these without spoilers is hard, and it sits in a bubble of trying to second guess every decision, rework mechanics based on what I assume people wouldn't like etc. I really thought people would hate the fishing for example, and yet that seemed to be quite popular. So any and all feedback is massively appreciated.

A couple more things - myself and the mods can't influence a live game in any way. The mods especially have no powers above moderating player behavior, and for fairness the game mechanics themselves apply to us all equally. Just want to make that super clear!

Please don't use scripts. We caught a few people doing it, and it's against the ethos of the game.

This was the playlist if you want to see the songs included.

Finally, a thank you again to everyone who came along and played. It really is always so fun playing with you all!

    Thanks

It's time to do the doings, and update the server with all the lovely fixes and what-nots.

This does mean for about an hour (unless something inevitably stops working and things take longer to recover...) the site will be up and down in various stages, interrupting both the web UI and the API so apps will also be affected.

You can keep an eye on the status of the site during this time by heading over to our status page. I can't promise it will be interesting watching though.

    Thanks

    Hello friends (and potential enemies)

I am a little poorly this week, so I am going to keep this one a bit short sorry.

New frontend for Piefed - old.piefed.zip

I've taken the "old" interface from Lemmy and made it work with piefed (mostly).

Fairly few issues over the last month thankfully!

    Please Don’t Be a Lurker!

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip isn’t money, praise, or a gif of you pronouncing gif wrong by saying gif instead of gif... maybe.

The Button, Season 5: Rome. The Full Recap 🏛️

39 hours. 127 citizens from 39 instances. One Emperor, one knife in the Forum, twenty-two stabbings, thirty-nine recall motions, two routs of Coolius Caesar, and a Senate that voted to rename Rome to New South Corvidton.

The gates opened on 25 September at 19:00 UTC and the last timer ran dry on 27 September at 10:01 UTC. Here is everything that happened in between. All times are UTC.

A massive thank you to @W3dd1e@lemmy.zip and @ComradePupIvy@lemmygrad.ml who helped test this season!

    TL;DR

    • 🦅 Crow won the season, holding the button for 32.4% of the game.
    • 👑 @vicinus@piefed.zip seized the throne and reigned for 3 hours 14 minutes before [redacted] struck on the Ides.
    • 🗡️ 22 stabbings, 17 successful recalls and 68 seat challenges. Rome's Stability bottomed out at 42 and never fell.
    • 🕶️ Coolius Caesar marched on Rome twice and was driven off both times by the gladiators.
    • 🏇 @livligkinkajou@slrpnk.net turned the Circus into a gold mine: +22,733 gold, including a single 10,000-gold ticket.
    • ⚔️ Verus the Thracian (@bevsdad@lemmy.ca) became the only gladiator to reach grade 20.
    • 🏗️ The Treasury poured 80,130 points into Public Works. Five projects were completed and the Aqueduct runs.

The Senate later passed a decree that "pressing the button when there's more than a minute left makes everyone sad and you should feel bad as a matter of law."

The season ended when the clock was allowed to run out, with 1,822 unused presses sitting in people's pockets. House Purple alone was holding 563 of them.

    🏹 Corvidton @comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml dissolved after 16 hours
    🐺 Sempronii @m_f@discuss.online dissolved after 71 minutes

Loyalty was not Rome's strongest virtue: players joined a house 102 times and walked out 40 times. The season's great wanderer was @bevsdad@lemmy.ca, who joined a house 14 times, which may explain a certain decree further down. @tikiporch@lemmy.world joined seven.

Corvidton lasted less than a day, but it never really died. It lived on in graffiti ("Corvidton is a lie", "Beware Corvidton19 virus", "New South Corvidton") and in the Senate, which voted 100 to 42 to rename Rome to New South Corvidton.

    🗡️ The Politics of Rome

Rome's offices ran on claim-or-challenge: take an empty seat, or stake influence to challenge someone for theirs and let the city vote. Above that sat the Senate's recall motions, the Consul's veto and, for the bold, the Ides.

    By the numbers

    Empty seats taken 93
Seat challenges 68: 28 won by the challenger, 19 held by the incumbent, 20 called off
Recall motions filed 39: 22 carried, 11 failed, 6 vetoed
    Players actually recalled 17
Stabbings (the Ides) 22, plus one Emperor
    Vetoes 8
    Sacrosanct shields raised 44 (@bevsdad@lemmy.ca 10, @comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml 8, @vicinus@piefed.zip and @sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 6 each)

Most successful challenger: @gwaer@lemmy.world (4 seats won from 5 challenges). Most challenged: @bevsdad@lemmy.ca, whose seat was contested 10 times.

    How it unfolded

    How it unfolded

🌙 Night one: the first knives

    25 September, 19:00 to midnight

🌑 The small hours: @bevsdad@lemmy.ca's purge

    26 September, 01:40 to 06:30

As a Praetor, @bevsdad@lemmy.ca went after rivals one by one:

@tikiporch@lemmy.world and @hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works hit back with recalls of their own against @bevsdad@lemmy.ca and @vicinus@piefed.zip. Then the knives came out:

☀️ Morning: the Consul and the Citizen

    26 September, 09:20 to 12:00

    The season's great feud.

    👑 Midday: the Emperor

    26 September, 12:41 to 15:56

    • 12:41 @vicinus@piefed.zip stops asking and seizes the throne (see below).
    • For three hours Rome is an Empire. The Senate's decrees run from "All Hail Emperor Vicinus!" to graffiti reading "We must stab the Emperor."

    🗡️ Afternoon: the Ides

    26 September, 15:34 to 18:00

A claimant rose in the provinces at 15:36, and the city came apart: six stabbings in 26 minutes.

With the throne empty, the Consul's seat changed hands four times in under two hours: @demigodrick@lemmy.zip, @m_f@discuss.online, @bevsdad@lemmy.ca, @sneezycat@sopuli.xyz.

🌆 Evening: the recall duel and the second spree

    26 September, 18:27 to 19:30

🐦‍⬛ The long night: the Corvidton purge

    27 September, 01:45 to 04:35

@comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml, founder of the short-lived Corvidton, took the Senate by storm.

🌅 Dawn to the end: @gwaer@lemmy.world's Rome

    27 September, 04:35 to 10:01

    • @gwaer@lemmy.world holds the Consul's seat three times, the last from 07:53 to the finish.
    • 07:00 @gwaer@lemmy.world vetoes one final recall.
    • 07:08 @bevsdad@lemmy.ca paints "TIKI 4 EMPEROR" on the aqueduct.
    • 09:42 The Senate decrees that "Children must participate in the hunt."
    • 09:43 The season's last blood is @gwaer@lemmy.world's own, eighteen minutes before the timer runs out.

    27th 09:43 @gwaer@lemmy.world

Stabbed most: @gwaer@lemmy.world, three times, and @vicinus@piefed.zip, three times counting the throne. @sebas@lemmy.zip, @green_copper@kbin.earth, @mschae@discuss.mschae23.de, @nailingjello@lemmy.zip and @macallan@lemmy.world were each struck down twice.

    The Consuls of Rome

    14 terms, 10 players: @vicinus@piefed.zip, @demigodrick@lemmy.zip, @m_f@discuss.online, @bevsdad@lemmy.ca, @sneezycat@sopuli.xyz, @gwaer@lemmy.world (three terms), @nailingjello@lemmy.zip, @svc@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz (twice), @tikiporch@lemmy.world (twice) and @comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml.

    Most offices held: @tikiporch@lemmy.world (11 terms), @bevsdad@lemmy.ca and @gwaer@lemmy.world (10 each).

👑 The Throne and the Ides

@vicinus@piefed.zip was Rome's first Consul and then went further. At 12:41 on 26 September they seized the throne and left House Crow to reign as Emperor.

    The reign was busy:

    • Proscribed House Nero's Fire three times (each one cost Rome 10 Stability).
    • Recalled @green_copper@kbin.earth out of the Senate.
    • Paid three donatives to the citizens in the forum and topped up the Games purse twice.
    • Gave out Bread and Circuses twice: a free press for everyone online (19, then 30).
    • Spent 3,427 gold of the Treasury on the City Walls and paid for public works three times.
    • Marched against a claimant in the provinces (+12 Stability).

At 15:56, with @comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml shouting "I HAVE A KNIFE IN MY HAND RIGHT NOW" in chat, [redacted] struck. Beware the Ides! @vicinus@piefed.zip fell to Citizen after 3 hours and 14 minutes on the throne, the longest (and only) reign of the season.

@vicinus@piefed.zip: "I've been killed!" @comradepupivy@lemmygrad.ml: "WE ARE A REPUBLIC ONCE AGIAN!!!" @vicinus@piefed.zip: "The crows will rise again!"

The pact to rotate the Consul's seat held: nobody took the throne again.

    📜 The Senate

335 motions were filed and 280 passed.

    Kind Passed Failed Vetoed
Spend on the city (+5 Stability) 59 7
    Grain dole 57 1
    Subsidise a house 42 11 1
    Fund a Public Works project 37 3
    Recall 22 11 6
    Games purse 21 1
    Commend 18 3
    Decree 13 4 1
    Sanction 7 6
    Hire the vigiles 4

The decrees of Rome, as passed into law:

    • "Corvidton joins the Crow."
    • "Every pet owner online now must give their pet one treat and announce their names in chat."
    • "Appoint Misty as Admiral of the New Corvidton fleet." (16 to 1)
    • "Rename Rome to New South Corvidton." (100 to 42, at the third attempt after "Corvidton II" and "New Corvidton" both failed)
    • "THE NEXT WINNER OF THE GAMES SHALL DECIDE WHAT FLAVOR OF ICE CREAM W3dd1e BUYS AT THE GROCERY STORE." (20 to 0)
    • "Bevsdad is hereby no longer barred from serving on the New South Corvidton Senate." (200 to 55), then four minutes later "Bevsdad is barred from membership in any of the grand houses, or holding any position above Praetor." (60 to 0)
    • "Children must participate in the hunt." (1 to 0)

Decrees that failed: "Shame Bevsdad for disregarding the danger of the beast!" and "Make Misty Empress 😸".

    🕶️ Coolius Caesar

Act 1, 13:08 on the 26th. Coolius marched on Rome with 100,000 health. The Senate voted to fight, 2 to 0. Fifteen gladiators threw 196 attacks at him and he fled in 27 minutes, shades askew. @vicinus@piefed.zip struck hardest, then @sneezycat@sopuli.xyz and @hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works. 1,000 gold was shared out and Rome gained 20 Stability.

Act 2, 17:58 on the 26th. He came back on a white stallion, in shades, with 300,000 health and twice the Stability drain. The Senate voted to fight again, 7 to 0. Twenty-five gladiators landed 524 attacks in 53 minutes. @bevsdad@lemmy.ca struck hardest (29,401 damage), just ahead of @w3dd1e@lemmy.zip, @macallan@lemmy.world, @sneezycat@sopuli.xyz and @egerlach@hachyderm.io. 1,500 gold was shared and he fled once more.

He swore to return. He did not get the chance this season. 👀

    🌾 Crises

Six crises reached the Senate, and Rome answered every one:

    Crisis Rome's answer Stability
Goths at the Danube Pay tribute +6
The grain fleet is lost Buy grain at any price +8
Plague in the Subura Send the physicians +8
Fire in the insulae Pay the vigiles +9
A claimant in the provinces March against him (by the Emperor's decree) +12
Tax revolt in Iudaea Remit the taxes +6

Stability opened in the 60s, touched 100 on the first night, and bottomed out at 42 on the evening of the 26th during the second stabbing spree. It finished at 86. Rome never came close to a Sack.
