If an election were held today, 48% of committed voters would vote Liberal, 32% Conservative, 9% NDP, 6% Bloc Québécois, 3% Green, 1% People’s Party, and 1% another party.

Avi has run. Twice. In two different ridings. He came in third in both elections. Sure, he wasn't the NDP leader at the time, but name recognition should have worked in his favour. Ask yourself why it didn't.

No, canadians punished Singh and as they should have. He was a Rolex wearing pretend progressive. You can ignore that he tanked the party all you want but that's fine. Also, true progressive and pro worker messages will always take more effort and time as they get attacked on all sides by monied voices. Layton lost a lot of elections before he started winning some.

The difference between Layton and Lewis is I'd have voted for Layton, and did. And also Layton advocated for things that would have actually benefited me. I'm not benifitting from a public grocery store, or a unionized job in the trades, just to pick two.

I voted for Layton too and met him and Olivia multiple times in the early days. He was amazing. But check his record during the Dion days. He was more of a centrist than you remember perhaps. He was on the frontlines with unions but voted to make deals with neoliberals. He was winning us over because he was the first genuine attempt at a progressive alternative. But in his time leading the party he did very little to push worker friendly deals. I get it why. That wasnt his job. But its Lewis'.

Huh???

I met him in 2007 when he was repping the Take, which is a film explicitly highlighting worker ownership and inspired me to co-found a workers cooperative. He has authored dozens of works promoting workers rights since them. And now he has a platform dedicated to protecting workers in a digital economy, which is absolutely a good thing, and has worked for decades to expand union rights.

No NDP leader (or any political leader) has as long a pro worker track sheet as Lewis and he has made it central to his campaign.

Makes me wonder where you are coming from. Were you unaware of the above perhaps?

So he's pro-union, not pro-worker. Great if you're in a union, but fuck the rest of us.

Was that before, during or after his time as a journalist with CBC? We already have one of those. He's the AI minister.

The Take wasnt about unions. It was about workers cooperatives, which he also advocates for. Not sure you properly read my post or maybe you dont know what workers cooperatives are. Creating more space for alternatives to anti-worker corporations is a good thing.

He was a CBC journalist about 20 years ago. Hes also been a professor and community activist for longer. Not an impressive critique.

Edit: just yesterday the NDP pushed forward a right to strike bill which the liberals and conservatives voted against. This is explicitly pro worker as its through general assembly and strikes we won most of our labour rights.

The NDP pushed through a bill to remove section 107, which was defeated. The SCC established the constitutional right to strike in 2015. Not only does section 107 not take that away, but the language the government has been using since 2024 has been in that legislation since the 80's. That bill was theater, not pro-anything. The solution is amend section 107 to make it clear it can only be enforced through back-to-work legislation.

Lewis pushing for nationalization of Stelco to save jobs. And in this case we have admission from the owner it was bought because it was too efficient and was undercutting their own production. So nationalization in this case is a good idea, of a profitable industry important for national security. No other party is pushing for such protection of these jobs. The Liberals are not stopping those losses from happening and law suits against the owners is a slow step. Nationalize like the UK did to steel very recently.

I mean, Lewis would nationalize Canadian Tire if he could. That's what activists do. They perform. And Lewis is performing. "capitalism is the problem," he says, while wildly benefiting from capitalism.

Nationalizing Stelco wouldn't save jobs any more than forcing Cleveland Cliffs to sell the company to a responsible owner would. What nationalizing Stelco would absolutely do is make it a political football. Of course Lewis wants to nationalize Stelco. He'll never have to deal with the consequences. Activists don't get elected.

As for saying saying to another company is better than nationalization, I would say that really depends on a lot of things. We just sold to these guys and they turned out to be anti trust. UK just nationalized their steel and they are deeply pro capitapist. I think you just dont like progressivism or socialism.

Nationalization in and of itself is not pro-worker. Paying people properly, with proper benefits and protections, is pro-worker. We have no evidence the federal NDP under Lewis would do that. We have plenty of evidence that the Manitoba and BC NDP did not do that. The Alberta NDP wasn't long enough in power to count, nor was the Rae NDP not to mention being 30 years ago. How much is the UK paying its steelworkers with the company it nationalized? How does that compare to the private sector in the UK? That's what determines how pro-worker it is.

As for saying saying to another company is better than nationalization, I would say that really depends on a lot of things. We just sold to these guys and they turned out to be anti trust.

And yet the guys who sold Stelco to these guys were not, and the guys who run Algoma Steel are not. This guy's an asshole, I agree. This guy also signed a contract. We agree what he's doing should hurt him. Where we disagree is what hurting him should look like.

I wish they manage to build momentum by the next general election, but it seems unlikely. NDP has successfully managed to nuter themselves to appease a few.

It'll be a while before they grow enough balls for a blue collar worker to take them seriously again.

Lewis is a brand new leader. What drives you to disparage so unnecessarily. Ive been following this party since BEFORE layton. Lewis is the first to really focus on these topics. Which makes me question your motives.

No ulterior motives. I'd've been very happy if Jack became our PM and did shave that mustache as he promised.

I just don't trust that party after what they turned into after him.

I even supported Avi's bid for leadership from the sidelines after realizing Rob Ashton is too "white" and "cis" for psychotic NDP partisans to become the leader.

I wish them well, but I don't see NDP forming the government next election.
