Sadly I think there really are 188,000 dickheads on Twitter.

As well as his fellow Nazis, Musk is also wildly popular within a certain subset of the business community in Asian and African countries who are more culturally insulated from his political unpleasantness, but all think that if they can become his friend by liking and commenting on all his posts then he'll invest in their shitty startups.

I don’t know why the meme has the highest IQ person say

Every time I see the midwit meme format, it reads like OP imagines that they're the 145 IQ guy who is above it all, when all other evidence suggests that they're closer to the 55 IQ guy.

This is true, but also kind of depressing that Capitalism is now so insidious that people treat gaben like some kind of benevolent philanthropist for choosing to sit on a huge ongoing cash cow that makes more money directly to his bank account than he's physically able to spend, rather than IPO it.

I’ve seen a lot of hysteria around “tankies” since I started using Lemmy and I gotta say I really don’t get it

I used to think this but then discovered that most of the actual tankies are blocked by my instance.

By contrast I pointed my browser to lemmy.ml just now and the front page includes a celebration of "Russia Unity Day", a reading group for "Soviet Democracy", and three "good news only" type puff pieces about China. There's definitely a solid bloc of propagandists out there.

As others have said, they want to run that kind of instance I don't actually have any huge beef with it. To an extent I think it's good to have some other perspectives and news sources. Just be aware that that's who people are talking about when they talk about "tankies", not the people who post stuff critical of the Democratic Party.

This annoys me every time it comes up

that's why the repost bots keep posting it, because it generates engagement. Sadly Lemmy is no more immune than the rest of the internet. OP is a new account that started 12 bait threads in the space of under an hour, so they'll be getting blocked now.

I'm reminded of Iraq. Saddam Hussein was objectively an evil tyrant, but the net amount of death and suffering the people went through in the decades following the US invasion, was far greater than anything he put them through.

Also Millenials’ and Gen Alpha’s. Once again Gen X doing all the heavy cultural lifting.

(Edit: go on then, you name a 20yo skateboarder that most people outside the sport have heard of)

(Second edit: yeesh, I retract my statement! It was a post about a skateboarder having a long career, not a calculated attack on everyone under 45, put the pitchforks away already)

As the party fielded more and more candidates who championed economic-right policies in order to attract corporate donations, the idea of "purity testing" was turned into a stock phrase to attack critics using labels, instead of justifying it on its own terms.

Phrases like "moral purity" now serve two functions: firstly, to dismiss criticisms from the Left wholesale without having to discuss them directly, and secondly, to blame them for the rise of fascism.

In theory it was also supposed to serve a third function of bullying the Left into voting Democrat, but that didn't work.
