‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Pitched Nathan Fielder a Collaboration After Watching ‘You Can See Everything’ in c/movies@piefed.social

Lol. I loved Obsession, and had decided not to see the Elizabeth Holmes documentary after watching the trailer because it seemed to be like a sociopath trying to be likable to cameras as a last resort... Now I really wonder if I am missing anything..

In drosophila, a.k.a. fruit flies. They have a whole different relationship to alcohol, since their lives revolves around rotting fruit where yeast thrives. Drosophila eats yeast.

Also, fascism has a lot to do with imperialism. All examples in Europe had this connection and support from the previous rulers.

I recommend Antifa manual by Mark Bray.

Roblox downloaded 145 GB of models from our sites (including adult content) without asking (open3dlab.com)

On 15 and 16 October 2026, a crawler that said it belonged to Roblox walked through almost every project on Open3DLab, SFMLab and SmutBase, and proceeded to download complete copies of 1,027 files from 712 projects. 145.5 GB of our creators' work, downloaded for what we assume are AI training purposes.

US is the worst place to live in. After Israel and some other dictatorships, sure. But on par with many. And worst than some.

The crazy part is that Hollywood and some other propaganda machines make us believe the opposite.

Anyone else gone completely off HN these days? (programming.dev)

    cross-posted from: https://feddit.uk/post/57531140

I still used to frequent it all the way up to last month, for some interesting discussions. But now... it's really become AI-pro^[Yes, I know it's been that way for a while, but either I'm feeling it more or the bots have gamed the website to the point that all you see are announces from big tech companies or people going on about their AI solutions] and any post that even hints about AI existentialism gets immediately cut down.

I find it hard to browse the site anymore, and lament the loss of expert tech discussion in my weekly routine.

You reapply/ reload database and do all the recovery procedure on a clean new installation for everything. Disaster recovery is much a thing together with backup. Depends on your infra how to proceed in concrete steps.

    The contagion of fear (bcantrill.dtrace.org)

[...] We should heed the wisdom of the late Carl Sagan that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence: the claims from Coxon and his ilk are the most extraordinary a technologist can make, and we must demand evidence commensurate with the claims. That said, we should not expect the public to understand LLMs, critical infrastructure, bioweapons, extinction biology, etc. — that burden must lie with those making the claim. The lesson that I learned (shamefully) decades ago is that domain experts, by way of their expertise, implicitly hold the public’s trust — and we must not abuse it. It is incumbent upon us to be circumspect in our claims — and maximally so when raising the alarm.

    Open weight models reviewed (wagtail.org)

Apparently Gemma 4 (by deepmind) are very energy-efficient for their capabilities.

The post itself seems to recommend a company (neuralwatt.com) but it's unrelated to project wagtail (an open source CMS made with django) so I consider it legit, they're just vouching for this new approach that shows users their ecological footprint basically.

(Of course, running these at a homelab is possible. hence the relevance of this info for the community)
