I think he really just works more on his PR
It doesn't hurt to have the component that is optimized for drawing things to the screen be a bit more involved in drawing things to the screen.
Strictly speaking necessary? No. Does it hurt? Not at all.
"Native" sort of loses its meaning in this context - this new client is not "native" in the sense of using the existing GUI tooling for each platform (Cocoa for macOS, any of Microsoft's own frameworks on Windows, primarily Gnome/KDE on Linux).
It is using a universal framework in GPUI, so the experience will be the same on each platform.
It is "native" in the sense that it's not web technology on any of the platforms.
The price of memory-thing is probably not that important as compared to the AI-assisted coding thing. Making things in Rust when you have access to AI tools is dead simple, which was always the argument for making things in Electron. Porting things from one language to another also happens to be one of the sweet spots for AI coding tools, they thrive on tasks that have very clear specs - an already existing codebase with tests is just about as clear of a spec as you can get.
I'd be willing to bet $100 that AI assistance was involved in creating this new client, yes.
Similarly I'd bet the same amount that AI assistance was involved in building the former electron-based client
I don't miss shoveling snow that much, no, but winter sports are amazing, so I have to disagree
Sub-freezing temperatures during winter is way, way better than just above freezing. Snow helps so much in making winter passable. You can do winter sports and the snow reflects the light making it on average a lot lighter than if everything just melts away. Plus the snow is really pretty.
I'm sure Winnipeg has a few degrees of margin before being condemned to the type of misery we have to cope with in winter over here, though.
I wouldn't classify myself as a scholar of feminist thought, but one could take the position that patriarchy is detrimental for both men and women, and that this is an expression of that.
So I can guarantee you that there's a lot of good things coming out from for example Google - massive amounts of contributions to open source for example.
We don't forget the bad things Google do, however, nor do we defend them, because we understand what they are.
Understand what Valve is as well.
It's an equally large problem on each platform, yet for some reason Valve gets vigorously defended any time they receive criticism.
