It's Lemmy. People see Google or AI and hate on everything related by default. IMO, this is, at least conceptually, a good feature. With the increase in bike riders, bother casual and fitness related, this has the ability to increase safety. I'm surprised Garmin beat Google to the punch on this one. Hopefully it becomes ubiquitous with fitness wearables, so in areas where there aren't clear bike lanes, riders don't have to be concerned about drivers.

Taking a step back from "the cloud" has really opened my eyes to the wild shit these money-hungry corpos pull on the daily.

Also, a reminder that Waze is owned by Google.

Cool from a safety standpoint. Terrifying from a safety standpoint and a privacy standpoint.

The idea is to highlight them on the road so they are harder to miss (I assume).

    Edit:

Gadgets and Wearables notes that the early code suggests that Waze will be able to leverage Garmin’s LiveTrack location data to show nearby drivers where cyclists are, presumably to help drivers look out for cyclists along their route.

Because it is apparently way to hard to just look at the road you are driving on.

I've been in a car with people where I've had to point out to them pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and other vehicles.

I've been merged into like I wasn't even there on multiple occasions (extremely terrifying on a bicycle).

People are bad at measuring distance while moving at speed. And their situational awareness very often leaves much to be desired. But this (while a novel approach) is a terrible idea.
