"Transgender, gender-nonconfirming, and nonbinary New Yorkers deserve age-appropriate health care that is affirming, respectful, and considerate of all their needs. That’s why, for the first time later this summer, the NYC Health Department will be expanding services to provide gender affirming hormone therapy to adults 19 years of age and older at our Corona Sexual Health Clinic. As with the other clinic services, gender-affirming hormone therapy will be offered at no to low cost and regardless of immigration status. We look forward sharing more details upon launching the pilot,” said a NYC health Spokesperson in a statement to Erin In The Morning.

...

Commissioner Alister Martin: “It’s incredibly important that we get the messaging right here and that we lean in on the comms and the campaign here, but it’s also important to deliver for people and to provide the services they need. And we’re excited to say that pretty soon we’re going to be able to offer gender-affirming care directly at our clinics. We have a clinic that will be opening up in Corona which will offer gender-affirming hormone therapy for adults. It’s like one of the first times a public health department has ever taken that step, and we’re proud to not just stop there. We’ll continue moving forward with this.”

Councilmember Tiffany Cabán: “Can I ask a follow-up on that? Particularly because that’s a really big deal, but also—we’re seeing this devastating decrease in services for youth, and especially youth under 13, 12—like, there are almost no providers who provide that care. And the one or two that do is obviously under attack from the federal government. So is there going to—are you thinking about an expansion in that youth care? Because I’m talking to parents all the time and they don’t know where to take their children.”

Commissioner Martin: “As you can appreciate, the balance that we have to strike is—we are committed to this issue and want to make sure that we provide the services and resources for youth, as well as making sure that we don’t expose ourselves to clawbacks from the federal government, which disrupt the rest of the care that we can give. And so there’s much more to come on this, trying to sort of figure out that right balance. We’re eager to work with you on this, but rest assured we are working on this and we’re trying to figure out how to do this.”

What's with this creep towards taking adulthood from 18 year olds? How can you shift the cutoff a year like that?

it makes it that much easier to increment it for more adults, and it has forced hospitals into capitulating to not providing care to legal adults (making that a null argument later) - it's just designed to setup the next step of removing all gender affirming care for trans individuals

I'd like to remind the trans kids who were denied prescription care that diy exists and is safer than a natal puberty that'll have lasting changes you don't want

Yes, that's true (I utilize that option myself as an adult), but procuring $100 in bitcoin to get a vial shipped to you is not feasible for 9-12 year olds, nor are homebrew hormone blockers available (and good luck sourcing T, as it's a controlled substance). This messaging should be directed at the parents, not the children, and even then it only applies for estradiol and progesterone.

It's a compromise and probably the best we'll get while we have to deal with the fascists in all branches of Gov right now.

Yep. That's the nature of compromising with fascists. Today's compromise is the best you'll ever get.

When will we stop "compromising" and start making them compromise with us? Billionnaires are the root of all problems. They feed and sow nazis.

Them compromising with us means we pay reparations to slave owners, we let cops kick homeless people awake, we fund secret police to slaughter minorities that want to do better because we don't want our side of the deal to be broken.

We should neither accept nor offer compromise. We need their unconditional surrender, their disarmament, and their dissolution. Not out of punishment or vengeance, but out of simple safety. None of us are free until all of us are free.

it is disappointing, for many reasons ... I hope they push back on the executive order in other ways, but I worry that this signals that the NY attorney general is less likely to enforce NY laws about this ... since, the new clinic would clearly be in violation of anti-discrimination laws written to protect access to this care in particular.

I understand not wanting to threaten access to care for adults, but the executive order is not a law and shouldn't be treated that way, meanwhile NY has actual laws to prevent this kind of discrimination - so in some sense they are choosing illegal discrimination out of fear of retribution for an order that doesn't carry the legal weight it claims to ... not unlike Trump's other illegal executive orders which attempted to end birth-right citizenship and other absurdities - we shouldn't give those executive orders power by respecting them, but I understand that may not be the most pragmatic path.

if it were really sacrificing us there wouldn't be a clinic at all... but i understand the frustration at compromise. like OP has already said, they could've stood firmer on the laws in place to protect us. but it's hardly sacrificing.

The unfortunate reality is that not having that policy would mean 80% of their funding would go to legal defense for lawsuits from aggrieved right wing parents who have outside funding for their suits.

Until the laws state clearly that minors can make their own medical decisions independent of their parents, this is the correct decision. And even in that case this clinic would still be under attack.

Reality still sucks, and we still need to keep trying to make it better. Mamdani is a ray of hope, but he isn't in and of himself hope incarnate, nor is he a perfect ray of light.

He's just human. So are we. He's trying to make things better, and so can we.

So have the government pay for the organisation's legal defense by raising taxes on vacant properties in accordance to their value.

Congratulations, now the far right is paying 160% of this company's budget worth on training left-leaning lawyers.

I am identifying obstacles to making this clinic able to operate without being overrun by lawsuits.

I am not at all opposed to workarounds - it's why I am pointing out the obstacles. We need to update laws so that minors have bodily autonomy.

In my opinion, that's the legal solution. It doesn't mean there aren't other ways to make it work that Mamdani might embrace, because as a mayor he cannot enact that kind of legislation in the first place.

Lawsuits will occur regardless how Corona Sexual Health Clinic(CSHC) follow the law, because Americans are continuing their Fascist descent. Opposing fascism wherever it creeps up is humanitarian care. CSHC & NYC need to disobey fascist laws + demands, by force.

The only way facism ends is by killing it from the roots. And that start at making a pro-bono hospital for all in need of care, including our younger siblings.
No “if ands or buts.” “Yes and yes,” is how we win.

This is literally how most of the crimes of the Holocaust happened. Remember that whole "first they came for..." poem? Ever wonder what people who don't speak up told themselves at night to sleep better? They said things like:

The unfortunate reality is that not having that policy would mean 80% of their funding would go to legal defense for lawsuits from aggrieved right wing parents who have outside funding for their suits.

They said things like, "I'm just a town clerk. Now I've been asked to turn over the records of the names and addresses of all the Jewish people in town. If I don't turn them over, the fascists will come down on my head. If I have to spend all my efforts in a doomed fight against them, I won't be able to do any good. Best just to turn over the lists of Jews and focus on battles I can win. They're going to find those Jews one way or another."

The Holocaust happened through a thousand such individual compromises. And these small battles DO matter. If fascists have to spend all their efforts fighting against people overtly or covertly resting their efforts, they slow to a crawl. They only have so many resources. (In this case, Trump only has so many lawyers on staff.) Every person who refuses to fight however they can ends up directly enabling the fascists. If everyone fought, then they would get nowhere.

The Holocaust happened in stages, one category of people being declared unhuman after another. In each stage, people could tell themselves, "yes, I could speak up and do what little I can to fight this to protect this group, but I would be letting down all these other people if I tried to protect the targeted minority."

Fascists count on people not fighting back, to comply in advance. And the greatest way liberal enablers coddle fascists is by telling themselves that following the whims of the fascist will still be the greater good.

"The greater good" is the greatest tool of a fascist.

an option i see is an older acquaintance getting medicine for younger people, like older siblings often buy alcohol for underage people at the store in my country. but that would be inofficial and comes with its own drawbacks

that age gate of 19y.o. might be unconstitutional discrimination.

constitution quoteEqual protection of laws; discrimination in civil rights prohibited. § 11. (a) No person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws of this state or any subdivision thereof. No person shall, because of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, creed, religion, or sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy, be subjected to any discrimination in their civil rights by any other person or by any firm, corporation, or institution, or by the state or any agency or subdivision of the state, pursuant to law. (b) Nothing in this section shall invalidate or prevent the adoption of any law, regulation, program, or practice that is designed to prevent or dismantle discrimination on the basis of a characteristic listed in this section, nor shall any characteristic listed in this section be interpreted to interfere with, limit, or deny the civil rights of any person based upon any other characteristic identified in this section. (New. Adopted by Constitutional Convention of 1938 and approved by vote of the people November 8, 1938; amended by vote of the people November 6, 2001; amended by vote of the people November 5, 2024.)

it seems like discrimination by age. Surely a minor can convince a participating hospital to provide treatment despite its rules about age by presenting this part of the constitution.

This was crossposted, it's available in the crosspost menu of your respective client. For boost it shows here

Cross-posted as part of ongoing boycotting/protest efforts to reduce the influence of .ml comms

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitilize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.

    Megathread on the issue

    Some highlights from the link:

Dessalines, head .ml admin, lead Lemmy dev actively spreading genocide denialism https://sh.itjust.works/post/61371958

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

    I'm conflicted on this.

It's good that more capacity is being built, and hopefully that capacity can be expanded to youth when the administration changes.

Of course, that will be too late for many youths that have already lost access to care, and will have suffered through adolescence and now require expensive surgeries. I wish he did more, but I understand it's a balancing act.

How dare you bring pragmatism and nuance and reality into this?

I agree with you. It'd be better if more care could be provided for trans youths. Under the current conditions, publicly providing any care for trans individuals seems like a declaration of war against the President.

Seriously, though, people are acting like Mamdani's the God-King of a completely autonomous and self-sufficient New York City who can rule by decree and everyone is compelled to obey.

He should be criticized when deserved but also praised for making progress.
