So calling someone disagreeable a dick, or a bellend, or a prick, or a tosser, or a knobhead, or a wanker, is fine. But calling them a cunt is beyond the pale?
In a slightly similar vein. People who conflate all uses of the word retard as ableism generally have nothing against the words stupid, imbeciel, moron, or insulting peoples intelligence in general.
We just have to give up. Being smart is better than not being smart, and it doesn't matter if we invent new words a dozen more times, they'll just become insults.
All offensive words are going to be banned at this rate.
I watch my mouth in general, but I wish we would stop normalizing the idea that people have a right to not be offended. Also, if someone uses a slur, any judgement on them should be based on the intent behind the usage, not the usage itself. Cue the Michael Scott R-word clip here.
What authority and where is it officially a slur? Becsuse even the two biggest English dictionaries do not define cunt as a slur.
How do you feel about calling someone "whore"?
Yes, you know what I mean. A bit selective, aren't you? And who made you the "word police"?
Oh that's funny. He really did use "attention whore" as an insult right before posting this lol
Trying to win some brownie points with the ladies there, OP?
In what has to be a fairly male space, anonymously.
I see it a lot in progressive and leftists spaces. Performative feminism.
Also yes, there’s no women on the internet.
IIRC Reddit was like 2/3 male at one point, although I think it was improving when the APIcalypse happened. Plus, so many people here are in tech jobs, which are (self-perpetuatingly) like 90% male.
I know it's an outdated idea in general. Hmm, is there a fediverse version of Pinterest?
You’re speaking with a woman.
Good to know! I'm still guessing you're in a minority specifically on Lemmy. Which, to risk seeming performative, is too bad.
Yet you had no issue talking about whores in that other thread: https://lemmy.world/post/47636001
Can you explain?
Obviously out of all the possible derogatory words, Cunt is the one you should be worried about.
Plus, OP has zero engagement. This is straight rage bait
Jesus in year 0026:
1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Shut the fuck up and mind your own shit
Has anyone ever taught you about the dysphemism treadmill and euphemism treadmill?
Banning words, or trying to reframe them as bad has never worked. It just pushes people to use different words that end up with the same meaning.
Sexism, Racism, Ageism, all the isms... they will always exist as long as more than a handful of humans exist. Humans in large groups are pretty terrible. We didn't evolve to be particularly nice.
Banning words, or trying to reframe them as bad has never worked.
The banned words only get more power by virtue of being banned.
It just pushes people to use different words that end up with the same meaning.
Like "N-word" is the new n-word. Childish and useless.
And then there's the whole thing where we let racists define what words mean... They ruin everything they can, so there's no safe place to go to.
Yup, it's silly. It's a bunch of phonemes stuck together. Not using it is a completely reasonable requirement, but not even mentioning it?
Well, better too taboo than not enough, I guess.
Again it's the little racist trolls with their "oh but can I use it in this situation" "oh what about this situation" basically playing the "I'm not touching you does this bug you" game that just ruins polite company for everybody. I have never had an instance where I wanted to use that word. But put the Forbidden label on it and racist jackasses can't be help but be tempted by it like a giant red button.
Because forbidding it tells those types exactly what bugs their targets the most.
Skin colour being the distinction is actually pretty recent, so maybe not racism. One that used to be a big thing and now isn't as much is slamming people for eating different food. The torah/old testament does that a lot, as do other various ancient texts.
The general idea of hating outsiders is of course eternal.
Women can be cunts in the same way men can be dicks. It's not sexist, it's just a gendered term. Except in some regions and countries, where everyone is called a cunt.
I use the word. I'm also not-so-coincidentally British.
I personally do not see it as being derogatory towards women. As others have pointed out, the same logic would apply to "dick" and yet nobody makes that argument (unless it's rhetorical). Just because you reference a "characteristic" body part doesn't mean you're trashing the whole gender. It just doesn't make sense to me. It's not like it's only said to women either.
Others may disagree. That's fine. That's why you control your behaviour and others control theirs. All we have to do is be considerate (eg don't drop the c bomb when you first meet someone new) and everything is good.
Also: are you American? In Britain, at least 50% of my c word usages are to friends. It's almost a term of endearment. So why should your cultural view of the word override mine?
Anyway, peace out cunts and cuntesses!
Wait, were both of those sexist or only one? 🤔
I’ve always assumed that if I was in the UK and someone called me that, that I’m doing something right because that person probably likes me enough and is comfortable enough around me to call me that.
Yeah literally.
Although depending on context it may also be that you did something really bad, lol
Otherwise it means they think you can take a joke and probably like you at least a bit. If you're out drinking and it's said with a smile, you're officially one of the boys for the night
So "cunt" is bad because it demeans women, but you used "whore" as an insult in the title of your previous post. Performative hypocrisy at its finest.
It's not funny, It's not rebellious, It's just demeaning to women.
As a woman, I'll have you know my communities tend to use "cunty" as a form of empowerment
Where do you think twat, coochie, or coin purse would rank?
Wait. I thought a coin purse was a scrotum.
I think I've only heard it used once it twice before.
"Officially"
Pray tell, where might one find this official handbook?
Sincerely, An American who lived in Australia, and who dislikes both "cunt" and "dick" used for emphasis but who understands how different cultures views each.
How is something "officially" a slur? Who is the governing body for slurs?
Do you feel this way about calling someone a dick? By your own definition, it's a slur towards men.
Cunt is no different, it's just yet another way to call someone an asshole, it's barely a gendered term anymore. If you'd have brought this up back in the 90's, you may have had a point, but it really isn't commonly used as a slur against women anymore. That's what differentiates it from the other terms of unendearment that you listed.
depends where you are and what inflection you put on it. plenty funerals you'd get away with i can't believe the cunt's dead, but i don't imagine fuck that dead cunt ever being safe
It’s not funny
anything can be funny in the right circumstance
It’s not rebellious
sure
It’s just demeaning to women
this probably varies by location, time period, and inflection again. if directed spitefully at a woman you could make a case, but in general current day use, no
Because not everyone agreed with that assessment and not everyone uses it as a derogatory term? Even so, why should there not be terms derogatory to women? Some women are exceptionally horrible and we deserve a word that accurately conveys the gravity of emotion present in the criticism.
Much like dude, cunt is pretty gender neutral to me. I tend to save it for the most repugnant folks though. Otherwise it loses its sparkle.
Pretty sure the R word and F word are having a real comeback at the moment unfortunately.
Bitch never went away. Cunt probably won't either.
Women can't even break through the glass ceiling, there's no way one person's personal feelings on a word are going to sway the masses from using it.
And that's not even touching on the subject of reclaiming words and whether women should be "allowed" to use those terms themselves in an empowering way.
It's not any of that, and Americans don't get to have opinions on slurs, for obvious reasons.
