Playing music (jamming or performing) together. Nothing beats getting into a groove with fellow musicians.

Hey I just got a RSS feed post about this topic

    https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/Mqg2bqFw8k79sW7C2/you-should-try-contra-dancing

They give one example and explain the nuances of it but its really can be any sort of dancing or adult sports or board game nights or movement arts like taichi, judo, jiu jitsu, or climbing gyms for practicing bouldering, could be volunteering in some cases or LARPing, any sort of rexourring outdoor group that is physically away from devices and is pro social in a way that is low stakes where everyone has their attention on something else so the shy people have a easier time to get in

I've been figuring out lately that I'd probably like dancing if I wasn't so sheltered growing up. I know what what you mean about the movement flow state from doing stuff like cutting wood, I think there is something good about learning to cultivate flow state anytime too which is a bit difficult to explain but it just makes everything better.

What sort of stuff do you reccomend for dancing? I think to start out with it for me it would probably be easier to find solo stuff I can learn but partner dances seem pretty appealing for a lot of reasons.

That is exactly what I was thinking about contra, it seems like the kind of thing where the reward and structure is best for beginners looking to learn broadly by trying everything but not as much as something to just go do often because the skill tree hits a wall quickly.

If I've learned anything its that I can learn everything, I think I'd be decent at dancing because I do things which I think might be dance-like in the kitchen where I turn parts of my body just a little bit more here and there to get the most reach and dexterity out of various parts, I'm not crazy flexible but I think I can go a bit more than most and I'm rather tall and lanky so everything feels better to just be moving often.

I think I got the favorite music part down, but ill have to consider what of the music I like is danceable, that's a good tip I hadn't considered, pretty much I'll find a way to enjoy anything but I do have things I like more than others but its very all over the place.

Just one person? And aside from pleasantly passing the time with random chatter...

    Squash.

Loved playing squash with someone of similar ability, just socially keeping score in a endless game until we're too tired to play.

Thinking of nothing else for a time, focused on the game.

Sadly my health hasn't been up to that for a while now... But that was great.

    Β

As a group activity. Table-top RPG with long-running worlds.

Usually D&D but even system-less story-teller games. Whether running the game or playing it.

Role-playing with an experienced and familiar group of friends that can flip instantly in and out of character to chat about the game as much as play it - that's great fun. We could do that all day (and in some instances most of the night)...

I really wanna just talk fringe topics...

Like alt timelines, butterfly effect, philosophy (especially ontology), space travel, aliens, fermi paradox, time dialation, black holes, you know, all the very werid stuff...

But unfortunately, people IRL seems to not like to talk about these things...

The other thing is just... I guess exchange life stories...

Heatedly debate with them from a place of bad faith about events and concepts that are not actionable and we have no control whatsoever about, getting extremely winded up and emotional during the entire process, speaking louder than what's socially acceptable, using very cheap half baked arguments and ultimately appealing to made-up authority figures if they corner me, until they admit I'm right, even if just out of sheer exhaustion or sarcastic condescension.

Hey, I'll take what I can get.

    hbu?

Me? Dance dance revolution. It's so much more fun with a partner, not exclusively but in part because you feel less dorky with someone else doing it with you. If I had more stamina hubs and I would play for hours.

I hear it's very cathartic. Is it mostly for goofing around or do you get competitive?

Mountain biking in the rain. Biking is fun in general, but in the cold rain and mud, it's a mission you're on together.

We call this type 2 fun. It might not the most fun at the time but once you're off the hill and having a pint you say it was the best time ever, because you survived.
Also allows to I've climbing and skiing.

I challenge you to ride a mountain bike down a muddy hill, brakes on full lock, tyres skidding, while you barely manage to keep it upright and not have the most fun of your life! Yeah there are definitely parts that fall into that category of 'fun now that we're home' but a lot is primary fun.

I don't know where you live but the Scottish Highlands can produce some seriously "fuck this" weather. When you're still hours away from home and the sleet and winds pick up, your soaked to the bone and hands too cold to pull the brakes, you look back on it with more fondness than you felt at the time.

OK that definitely sounds not fun. I'm in Aotearoa New Zealand which doesn't get that bad. Even in the middle of winter, in the northern bike parks, it's pretty ridable without risk of hypothermia. I hope I do get the chance to ride over there one day though

Don't get me wrong, we have good days too but the weather can change in a heartbeat here. It's what catches most people out, especially on the mountain, too many people head out thinking it's a nice day then the weather changes, cold wet and zero visibility. Easy to get tired, lost and confused and needing to call mountain rescue only too find out they were only 10 minutes away from the car park.
I remember biking years ago in Wanaka and climbing at hang dog in golden bay on the south island. Beautiful place, can't wait to go back, take my kids. It's just so far away.

I've never rode in the south island, would love to but accomodation etc is so expensive. South island is definitely the more picturesque place, it would be a wonderful place to live

Back when I was young me and the missus spent months in a shitty van traveling around. Back then you could rock up outside the airport and find a van with the keys and paperwork and a note saying to take it as the previous owner had left.

SCUBA diving. The best part about it is peeing on your buddy....

But seriously having someone to talk with after a dive where you have seen something amazing is a great thing.

Either having a deep conversation or sharing an activity that we're both passionate about. Things involving genitals don't make it to that list in my case anyway. I count those as chores.

Drive down to a beach nearby and sit in the car with a bag of chips, watching people walk by with their Very Good Dogs. My wife and I love it.
