Late reply (took a long break from lemmy) but most people in the world do not have a passport unless they plan to travel. Applying for the first requires more documents, for subsequent applications (aka: "renews"), its just filling out a form (which could be done online nowadays I believe). If its expired for too long I think you have to do the "first time" procedure again.

Perhaps, but I'm trying to defend this timeline lol.

Because I really do not like the "I get stuck in PRC" timeline, even just the thought of it makes me have an existential crisis.

I like my Youtube, and video games, and the open internet (open for now at least, who knows about the future 🤷‍♂️), the idea of living behind that firewall sounds kinda depressing (VPNs are not exactly reliable).

But the again with something as drastic as one country nuking another... China might not even have any internet at all, and become like North Korea...

Like what do people even do for fun in that timeline? Play with rocks? 😭

No thanks, I like to keep the ability to bingewatch my "Non-Approved" "Counterrevolutionary" western media. (I mean like... did you hear, they limit video games to 1 hour for those under 18, like bruh wtf, anything fun is banned)

"External Threats" and "National Security" are reasons why hardliners get into power...

As someone who was fortunate enough to leave the regime, if that insane "nuking China" thing happened, PRC would never have opened the borders (or if it ever did, it'd be very controlled and not as open as current timeline) and it'd be another North Korea situation (but more massive) and mass poverty and mass starvations well into the 21st century.

This timeline, Chinese people can actually leave. I mean my family is one of the many that left.

So... If that nuking happened, then do you think PRC would still allow people to leave in that timeline?

That timeline would have a lot of Anti-Chinese sentinment (as in hatred of Chinese People, not just the government)

There's no chance I can even get in the US, I mean just look at how the west closed borders to Russians... so now Russian dissidents have a hard time trying to escape.

I mean perhaps it'd satisfy a lot of US White nationalists, but there'd be a Billion people suffering... that's not good...

But disclaimer: I'm Chinese American so perhaps I'm biased and have sympathy for people in China that have nothing to do with the CCP.

perhaps striking while China was weak could have been fortuitous

If China had gotten nuked by foreign powers, China today would've been more authoritarian, people would be a lot more nationalistic, and poverty would've been a lot worse, which in turn means that CCP would've cracked-down even harder on any dissent in order to try to maintain their grip on power and probably do more executions instead of today where they merely detain you or make you do those forced apologies

Being anti-CCP is fine, but don't forget about the civillians under their jurisdiction that are innocent to geopolitical conflicts.

As a Chinese American, I kinda WTFed at it when I first read the history about it online 💀

I'm glad nowadays we have more countries with nukes to balance each other...

Can you imagine if only ONE country has nukes... We'd be at the mercy of either: USA or France or Russia or UK (British Imperialism flashbacks 👀) or CCP-Controlled PRC...

More nukes makes a more peaceful ironically lol

I mean as a 2nd child born in violation of the policy... 👀

(I heard some stories about kids being kidnapped by state-sponsored people and trafficked to get them forcibly "adopted" to prospective parents somewhere else, and also the whole international adoption thingy, cuz they targed families that had more than one child... allegedly... who even knows for sure...)

Edit: But nowadays, ironically, they have population crisis... 👀

China is a big place. Saturation with security cameras is an urban thing.

Yea that incident was in Guangzhou, I assume nowadays its probably filled with surveillance cameras.

Also, something I’ve learned in America is that people make a lot of noise about keeping kids safe, but that’s all just smoke. I can’t speak for China

China might not have guns and mass shootings, but domestic abuse is an issue that the law doesn't really touch on, especially is its more covert like verbal abuse or even physical violence if it didn't cause serious harm...

Especially if its not a spouse-on-spouse thing but its a parent against a child...

Like there are things that would trigger a CPS investigation in the US that in China they wouldn't do much about, cuz its just treated as "discipline" and its "family matters" and legal system isn't touching this.

I think my parents fear of CPS is why once we arrived in the US, they stopped with their um... ahem "disciplinary actions" against me.

(Also maybe cuz I got older and can sort of fight back??? Maybe 🤷‍♂️)

(I actually cant even remember a specific instance of my mom hitting me anymore... must been a repressed memeory by now, but I'm pretty sure it happened)

Also teachers have meter sticks to hit kida with...

Okay its not a beating, but I remember like you had to put your hands out and then the teacher slapped your hands with the ruler...

Dont remember what for... maybe "behavior problems"?

Or perhaps poor grade is also one of the things... idk, memory in 1st and 2nd grade isn't exactly flawless...

But corporal punishment seems very acceptable in China...

Saw a movie recently about Taiwan's education system (not the main story, but the backdrop of the plot, main movie was about Taiwanese Americans moving back to Taiwan), and in the plot, the parents encouraged the teacher to use the ruler thing as a form of discipline... wtf... that was actually the thing that jogged my memories...

(The point being, same culture, even being politically divided and with a different government, the culture is same... adults just get to do whatever as "discipline")

    Context behind this question:

So I watched some Chinese Youtubers recently (apparantly they crossed the firewall and there is a "trend" of this recently? not sure...) and watching some footage, which then triggered some old memories, again...

So when I was a kid in Guangzhou City, it was like 2008 and I had issues with home (fight with older brother) so I remember "running away" (not actually running away just impulse decision lol, I was 6 years old, what was I gonna do? no survival skills lmao) from home for a few hours... and I wandered like a very long distance away from home so when I came back several hours later, I noticed the police were only searching nearby my house, they might not have found me if I didn't get scared and decide to come back myself.

So fast forward to now, with all these cameras everywhere...

Hypothetically, if I was a kid again and I did that same "running away" thing, how long would it take for the police to find me? Like one hour? 10 minutes?

Like I can imagine them just stopping me within 5 minutes and be like: (in Mandarin) "Hey kid where to do think you're going? Stop being a disobedient child and go back home" 💀

Okay maybe this is a stupid question, lol (still kinda traumatized from that day, so this is sort of cartharisis for me)

    xD

Since I got summoned by a @ , gonna infodump cuz why not lol:

Funny enough now that my mom went to China for a 1-month visit, and now it's like 1 week in and I feel so sad about her absense from home...

The house feels so much more depressing... :/

I mean I guess this is a sort of "trial run" of what her eventual death would feel like...

Like... now I can call her... cuz now its just separated by an ocean, in this era, we have instantaneous communications...

someday it'll be separated by a barrier between the mortal realm and... whatever world beyond... the afterlife... spirit realm... or whatever...

I guess this is what my mom meant when she said she wanted to get married give birth to children... this same emptiness that I'm feeling...

I might never find love in life :(

Funny enough my older brother is also in China right now because mom pressured him to do marriage 🤣

(My parents are arranged marriage btw)

Summary: Basically this shithead "Hezuma Ryu" guy spreads fake news, false claiming that Korean and Chinese tourists were "harming deers", but even the japanese officials said there are no confirmed cases of tourists harming deers.

As an Overseas Chinese, this boils my blood.

Now, with AI, shit is gonna get worse, anti-Chinese sentinment is gonna get so much worse because of this.

I'm kinda having second thoughts about ever visiting Japan... certainly not Nara city (or whatever that city is called)

Translation of the Chinese Characters: [It's such a shame, since I could probably write a whole novel using 200 Chinese Characters! Long ago, there was a wolf. He really wants to eat goats. But he is very clumsy, so every time he tries, he fails to catch any goats. The End.¹]

¹It's a reference to a Chinese Cartoon 喜羊羊与灰太狼 (good learning tool for Chinese btw, since it was made for kids)

See, I fit in a whole story with so few space to write lol... I can totally summarize a novel using 200 characters xD

(Cuz Chinese Characters have more information density)

Petition to allow all languages so we can have longer showerthoughts! /just kidding lol...

    (unless... 👀)

I wanna talk to other Overseas Chinese but they are all either on:

    • WeChat
      or
    • Reddit
      or
    • Discord
      or
    • Facebook Groups

Or some other evil corporate platform

    WHYYYYY 😭

    So sad... 🥺

idk where else to post this, I hope this is the right place to discuss this... this issue of normies all using authoritarian-controlled platforms...

Cuz it takes like a few weeks to process and get your passport and documents back...

If the government wanted to, theoretically, they could "accidentally lose" the documents...

    👀

I was so worried like: oh shit something is gonna happen and I'm gonna miss the appointment, or forget a document, or something... too suspiciously calm and peaceful...

Nothing happened... I just went and did a normal thing... lol

All the post offices (that's where people in the US apply for passports, idk how its done in other countries) in my city are booked full... the fastest available slot was in another town across state lines

and its a predominantly white neighborhood... (and I'm ethnically Chinese)

So I was like: *Am I gonna be the only "foreign looking" person here? Oh no everyone is gonna stare at me...

    I show up there...

    and...

The guy working at the post office has brown skin tone... which I didn't even register at first since I got so used to it in Philly...

and then he spoke with a very noticible foreign accent (it sounds very close to a stereotypical "Indian Accent" as portrayed in the media... and no offence btw, my mom also has a very noticible accent)

and it took a few seconds before my brain processed it

oh... that's unexpected... (cuz I thought everyone is gonna be white here, I read that it was supposed to be a very white according to online searches)

    then I thought

yay, I'm not the most "foreign looking" person here!

Like I actually felt so much better seeing a non-white person here... especially someone that's actually working at the post office...

(and I mean it in a "We're both PoCs in this very white area" sort of way, like I felt less "out of place")

Honestly I think the internet paints a too grim of a view of the US... its not that bad when you actually touch grass... especially Reddit/Lemmy is so fucking distored and filled with FUD, doomerism, and "resistance is futile"-type propaganda, the average person in the US is not gonna lynch you for not being white... the sun was shining, and other than the paranoia, I didn't really felt like I was in any real danger...

    • did not meet any angry white old guy or karens yelling racial slurs or being aggressive...
    • did not run into ICE...

But then again, ngl, it felt weird that my dad was there with me and he was a non citizen and didn't speak English... felt kinda awkward... but I have no drivers license so I need my parents for transportation 🤷‍♂️

Also I now have no physical documentationa for my citizenship until they mail the stuff back to me... cuz they sent the original with the passport application...

Lets hope I don't run into ICE in these few weeks... 👀

[insert "chucles, I'm in danger" meme here]

Okay I'm gonna like info dump so apologies in advance:

    ...

    Like say: a doctor's appointment...

You know when you're a kid and everything is just set up by parents?

Then like fast forward... you're an adult and parents are busy or something...

And then you're like "Omg I'm alone... wh- wh- wha- what am I supposed to do..."

Okay I wasn't alone, but my dad had to drive me there, but he doesn't speak English so I'm pretty much alone in terms of navigating all that stuff...

    And example #2: Passport...

The last time I got it was when I was a teen so everything was already done by mom...

(funny thing is I ended up never using the passport cuz we never had a chance to travel... mostly just had it as proof of citizenship...)

Now I wanna like travel (maybe, no concrete plans yet) and mom told me to get a passport so when she comes back from her trip, maybe we go to Canada or something, I always loved the idea of Canada.

So um... I just bring the documents its good right?

Oh wait, I have to bring a photo thingy since the appointment didn't have the photo service...

wh--whe-where do I even go get that?

Oh shit the money order thing... wha- how- um... how much is it even exactly... oh fuck fuck fuck...

then my mind goes: I'm not gonna get all the stuff ready and miss the appointment and the next available one is like weeks away... shit... why is life so miserable?

mom is visiting China... so I'm just "alone" in the US... :/

I might have separation anxiety issues...
