I don't use any apps - mobile or desktop.

Is there any way to add a tag to users so that I can prompt my memory of their posting style, etc.?

I went to block someone who had nothing to add to a discussion other than a personal attack and discovered I'd already blocked them.

I tried re-blocking them, but their next comment still came through to my inbox; that's 2/2 4/4* that ignored the block.

I'd report this as a bug on the GitHub, but Microsoft doesn't like that I didn't give them a more common email address to sign up.

Screenshot to prove I tried the preferred way:

Requesting !astronomy@lemmy.world.

The community is a candidate replacement for !astronomy@mander.xyz: https://sh.itjust.works/post/69398727

Current moderator @slashzero@lemmy.world has been inactive for 3 years.

Link to a post made on the community from my local account: https://lemmy.world/post/54009431

I saw a community that has had the only mod for the community banned from the community ... the people of the community are now the ones that collectively mod that community now right? Or am I thinking about this wrong ?

Thanks for anyone that helps.

When trying to upload images to "spooky memes" instance, I would get this timeout message... but only with images not taken with my phones camera. (The image I tried to add was forwarded to me, and saved to my phone)

There was a lively discussion under the following post:

https://lemmy.world/post/53695307

Under which, I received this reply in my inbox:

https://lemmy.world/comment/26567564

Both are now inaccessible, both from the lemmy.world I was accessing them through and after a fruitless search for the original post on their instance. All I see now, which you likely see as well, is an unspecified "Error!"

I perused their mod log but it's like the post (and its comments) no longer exist.

How would I investigate what happened myself, apart from asking their admins/mods? Is this an intentional act or a bug?

I'm getting a Gateway time-out, or 503 Service Unavailable when trying to access old.lemmy.world. Any idea what's going on? Firefox updated today, and I've been dealing with a lot of strange things, so trying to make sure it's not just me.

And it seems like this 2-year old post might be related:

Hoping to get an admin to help promote an alt account as a moderator on https://lemmy.world/c/explainlikeimfive.

The old moderators disappeared and one made me mod before they headed off, but I learned later that reports don't federate to moderators that belong to other instances.

I created a .world alt to be able to deal with reports and made it a moderator via my lemmy.ca account, but the moderator rights didn't propagate to .world, either - I am a mod of the community when I view it on lemmy.ca, but when I jump over to lemmy.world on the same account, I'm not a mod. Also tried participating in a discussion on that community to try to force propagation, but it didn't take. I'm assuming it's a Lemmy back end bug.

Can you manually promote my mod alt to a moderator on .world please?

I've tried to add a Display Name a dozen times now, settling on one with spaces and capital letters but nothing else other than alphanumerics. With everything I've tried, the "Save" button seems to work (in that clicking it shows a pinwheel and changes its color), but no errors appear and the display name doesn't take.

Is there a character limit? No special characters? Something else?

A moderator claimed that a removal done on their instance was an admin, not a moderator, despite what the log says.

Suffice it to say my trust level of that community's moderators is relatively low - even for random strangers on the internet - but I fully acknowledge they could be telling the truth so I was hoping to get a public, third party, second opinion as far as whether or not that's the case.

Semi-related, but I have also encountered moderators claiming they have no idea which moderator on the team took an action, which if true is also a bit annoying as bad moderators can claim it wasn't them when it really was.

On the bright side, it's another Fediverse Win compared to Reddit, who I'm sure you all know doesn't have any mod logs whatsoever. The admin and moderator transparency culture there is also extremely limited, but at least here there are logs at all, even if they sometimes get the Flock treatment of: "reason: whatever"

P.S. I'm not implying individual moderators or admins should be identified by username in the logs, as that would almost certainly lead to harassment.

Hi, I was browsing the local page and noticed that the last archived copy of the page, shown by the archive.org extension, was from 23rd sep. I tried archiving the page then and there but it showed me an error. I went to the last archived page on archive.org and saw nothing.

Am I doing something wrong, this is a bug or that there is a policy in place to stop archival of the local page?

p.s.: The archived link lemmy.world shows the All page that to me normally shows as https://lemmy.world/?dataType=Post&listingType=All&sort=Active . Clicking 'local' does nothing in the archived page.

Can I be a mod for !asheville@lemmy.world? It appears to be abandoned by the original moderator. His last login was 3 years ago.

Instance down? (sh.itjust.works)

Seems like the instance has been problematic today. Seeing it in voyager and on the website. It will refresh a few times without issue then it will have no posts.

I was on a ... notorious community from a notorious instance lemmy.world is still federated with the other day, engaging in some spirited debate (dispelling a straw-man that generalizes a group I arguably belong to that is vilified in that instance as their favored punching bag), when I noticed a reply to a comment that wouldn't load. Backing out back to my profile, I noticed all of my comments under that post are missing.

I logged out and checked via their instance, and the mystery reply turned out to be a moderator of that community (that I haven't blocked) jumping in to add to the dogpile I was receiving. I coincidentally also saw the red Banned From Community next to my username.

Their instance doesn't appear to have a Moderation History option to click on like I'm used to seeing on lemmy.world to see if/when/why I was banned.

Is there some fediverse feature I'm unaware of where I can look into what's going on?

I DM'ed their moderators as I was recently told that was the only "modmail" feature the fediverse has, so maybe one of them will shed some light on what's going on:

As you can see, one of them is "Banned" (from what?), but strangely, they were the one involved in the discussion I mentioned above.

One of them replied, confirming I was banned:

Still wondering if there's a way to see this kind of thing from our instance, as I didn't and still don't see any way to do so via theirs.

Your post was not accepted because Failed to upload app/static/tmp/[Redacted].webp to piefedworld/posts///[Redacted].webp: An error occurred (SignatureDoesNotMatch) when calling the PutObject operation: The request signature we calculated does not match the signature you provided. Check your key and signing method.

I intentionally removed the numbers in the url, because I naturally don't know if they are related to something that should not be exposed.

Edit: I think it only prevent me from posting links with thumbnails.

Hey there,

The Deadlock Community has been inactive for over a year now and the owner has been inactive for almost two years.

Is there any chance I could continue that community myself?

18

!talesfromtechsupport@lemmy.world has a mod with no activity in 3 years, can I take it over to babysit.

I've noticed a few communities where the mods haven't ever contributed to the community (and its dead), or / and haven't even posted anything to lemmy in years.

Just a FYI, you can ask Lemmy World admins to takeover ownership of communities community and actively moderate it, to help revive it

It seems there were a few people who simply grabbed the community names when Lemmy grew, and had to plans to contribute to them.

Some of the communities that were affected , I've seen have a lot of potential (like some of the larger linux distros).

When I go to refresh a page or go to the home page, I sometimes get a blank page, and it will not change, even if I click on another link. I am forced to reopen a new tab and go to the website again.

This is about the https://blorp.lemmy.world/ version only.

I am using Brave Origin. I am also using, but should not really make a difference, Debian 13 KDE.

I know the subject has come up before, just wanted to add another reason to the pile. Their instance has been setting its users' post timestamps 15 minutes into the future so they'll be parked at the top of the "New" sort order for longer.

Examples:

It's always possible that they've done this accidentally somehow though.

Let's preface with the fact that I'm a tech idiot, so please bear with me if I don't immediatly understand something or need an ELI5 ^^°

Why I'm asking: I moderate some communities that are basically dead. I tried to kickstart them years ago by posting tons of images, guides and other content that I'd originally posted on reddit and had since taken down before I nuked my account there, but I've run out of things to post on Lemmy long ago and submissions from regular users are scarce.

However, I also have a youtube channel with hundreds of videos that might give a little bit of life back to those communities if I started posting them here.

I just don't know whether this is actually a good idea, or if it might be a far too big strain on the servers for too little payoff. I'd like to breathe back life into the communities but NOT at the cost of indirectly hurting the Fediverse in any way.

...and I don't really want to just post links to those videos either, as I would prefer to NOT redirect users to a different site. The main goal is to get people to enjoy spending time here, after all.

Any help and information is greatly appreciated ;) thanks in advance.

The reason I am asking is because the admins don't remove spam and the version they are using is old.

Which make me ask, why even open an instance on the Fediverse if you are not going to keep it updated and spam free?

Over the long-term this has the potential to harm the Fediverse and take money out of the other Piefed instance admins that keep their instances updated and spam free.

When will .world admins start caring about the Piefed instance?

Hello! I created my account about six days ago, and I found a community with inactive moderator for three years. Can I request to take over it? I didn't find any requirement in the TOS regarding account age, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks.
