I believe it. Lots of laptops and 1650s out there.

I don't believe it does 4k/60 on current gen games.

    All games?

So it can play Bloodborne and Demon's Souls? 😮

I would be very surprised if "all games" includes titles like rainbow 6 siege and others with strict/unsupported anticheat

You can install Windows on it and should be able to play those games.

They are obviously saying that their hardware is powerful enough to play all games; not that all games support their choice of OS.

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed in the machine, its specs are very underwhelming and not exactly future proof.

I really like the idea of Steam machines and I hope they are successful though.

They have to find a price/performance ratio that most users would be satisfied with, it's a difficult task and some one will always be left out. It's not future proof for sure, but I am sure it will be a banger value in present(whenever it launches).

and starting with this model leaves room for a “steam machine pro” for people that want more, just like playstation has done

… and also perhaps a “steam machine lite” for people that just want a little bit of retro/2d gaming on their tv

The point is that 4K TV is a lot more prevalent than 4K monitors and my understanding is that this device is targeting exactly the former audience. And this device will struggle with more demanding titles big time even with frame gen and FSR.

Again I am really hoping I am wrong here as we need more competition in the console segment. And it would be great for Linux compatibility and force more studios to create Linux ports and will be great for the overall compatibility.

But can’t run them at 8k with every option turned up to Ultra therefore the Steam Machine is garbage and the game engines are unoptimized and the developers are lazy. /s

Can it play hoop and stick? Like the founding fathers intended?

Possibly not, crysis is single thread bound due to it being a 32 bit application. You can technically run it as x64 but that's cheating.

What? 32bit has nothing to do with how many threads it can use. Just how much memory it can address.

Actually you're right, I think I got my wires crossed on that one, or just old misinformation from back then. 32 bit isn't exclusively single thread, but more games were built as single or limited amounts of threads back then. Might need to brush up on that.

EDIT: Yeah so Crysis apparently was entirely single thread for most/all functions, to this day people occasionally still have problems running it because of that, maxing out a single CPU core pretty hard. Might have to try it out at some point, see what it does to my rig.

Edit 2: So it's difficult to exactly say, but it looks like a lot of CPUs didn't support multithreading back in the day, and it was assumed that future CPUs would have higher clock speeds over multithreading capacity. I guess that was the motivation, that or they just need to wrap up development and the benefits of multithreading weren't as important at the time.

What may end up being the best selling console of all time is the first Switch which was maybe about a quarter docker as powerful as a PS4. This will be fine. It's about as powerful as a PS5. It's a strong minipc. Person plays FFVII Rebirth and then try to pickup the game dev hobby with Godot. It's on Steam and Flathub. Play Cyberpunk and then open up Ardour for their music aspirations

I mean a big difference there is that the switch can only play games that run on it. There are going to be games that don't run on the steam machine (or at least we'll), just as there aren't games that run on the steamdeck.

I think it will still do well, but that's a big difference between the switches approach to low power vs the steam machine.

    Can play all games*

    * if you install Windows but that concerns only the most popular games

Only reason I can't play certain games is the developers want kernal level anti cheat. Luckily even Microsoft is working on getting rid of that.

According to a Valve Engineer, the Steam Machine specs outclass the most common PC configurations.

That's the first sentence. As far as "clickbat" goes, this is barely one if at all.

Games with Kernel Level Anti Cheat won't run on Linux.

It's also quite funny what is defined as a PC? Steamdecks and Laptops are also in this category yet they are not really comparable to normal "PCs" aka Workstations/Desktop computers (nobody calls a smartphone a PC). You know something the Steam Machine targets.

Just post the original video instead of posting such a trash article with 0 research.

Update: Looks like you guys also call smartphones PCs so I clarified point 2.

Steamdecks and Laptops are not really PCs

Wut. Did you huff the stupid juice before commenting? PC stands for personal computer. Steamdeck has a full Linux environment by default and laptop can be anything (most of the time.)

You can run servers, command line/console, play games, edit videos, make music, control smart home devices and way more. In what way, are these not PC's?
