If they don't have a mouse-themed villain in the next series, I'll be disappointed.
(I realise there are currently no plans for a next series, but I have faith.)
Wonder Woman is currently doing this and it's kind of brilliant:

I don’t remember this part of Redwall
Do you read paper or digital? And if digital, where do you get them?
Thank god.
I mean. If it's Disney that gets the rights, as implied by the title, it's uh... not going to get better.
If it's the BBC that retains rights, then ... well, better than Disney, but that's a low bar!

Not sure how you're getting that from the title, but reading the article clarifies that's not the case at all. Also, not sure who you expect to be producing Dr. Who other than the BBC after 60+ years of doing so.
nah, disney are fucking off. Their chief complaint seems to be that locking down viewing of doctor who didn't give them the membership boost they wanted.
that's because fuck disney we all pirated it
I was pirating it before it was cool. I also bought the first 9 seasons of the 2005 show. IDK why Disney decided to start their seasons from 1. There wasn't a decade+ gap in seasons.
Oh no, you mean we won't get to see what happened to the space babies!? /S
Wait so I won't get Chris Pratt in my Doctor Who? :(
Why would you want a MAGA prick in DW?
I was being sarcastic, although to be fair that absolutely does not come across in the text. I didn't know Pratt was MAGA though, I just think he's shit.
🤞 Please let us finally have Jeremy Clarkson as Doctor Who.
At this point, I wish BBC was willing to open up its iPlayer service to international, non-UK taxpayers who are willing to pay a monthly fee to use the service. Then they wouldn't need to find a new network and would make more money.
They did. It ran in several countries but it failed when it tried to enter the US market because the BBC’s US customers such as ABC and AMC threatened to stop buying their shows if they opened a rival.
Then years later the BBC bought out ITV’s stake in BritBox outside the UK.
Glad that lingering question was answered sooner rather than later. Hopefully this means a quicker turnaround for the next season now, though I figure it'll still take some time.
Honestly it's Disney, hated BUT I'm still sad that DR Who needs to find a new home!
Wow, I thought they were going to wait until they saw how War did before announcing anything... someone must have had a sneak peek or something...
Disney is cancelling loads at the moment, they even cancelled a new animated Mickey cartoon, if their mascot can't get a series doesn't boad well for a lot of stuff
Disney only agreed to Who because BBC Studios made it a package with Bluey.
The BBC just confirmed that the show will continue and will return with a Christmas special in 2026 penned by showrunner Russell T. Davies.
Good. Let's just put it all behind us and move forward.
Kind of what I was expecting, although I'm not sure if a short break might not have been better. I guess we'll see what happens.
Now for the million dollar question: Who will be in the Christmas special?! :-)
With RTD still on board, he's all but guaranteed to do...whatever it is he has in mind with Billie Piper.
Whether it's a one-off or an ongoing thing is pretty hard to say.
A "search for the Doctor" arc could actually be an interesting change of pace, assuming Piper isn't playing the Doc.
Yeah, I'm curious to see what they decide to do there, especially after it seemed the fan response wasn't extremely positive. I know my wife was not impressed when she heard about it! I'm sure he'll be tempted to use 14 in some capacity since he's still presumably floating around somewhere too.
Either way, hopefully the break gives them a chance to regroup and come back fresh!
I feel like the obvious rewrites to cover Gatwa's exit were so jarring, it's hard to feel overly positive about the twist.
But taken in isolation...IDK, there's potential there. It's all about the execution.
We actually haven't gotten that far yet to see it ourselves, but I've heard that it felt a bit tacked on. I think I would be fine with Piper as the Doctor if they had some good stories, but to me it seems a little too much like nostalgia bait. Especially after 14!
Well, I couldn't stay away from this, could I? I for one am quite happy that Disney cut the ties, finally. That means the Beeb are free to find a new funding partner going forward.
As for Davies, so far he's only confirmed for that holiday special, and honestly I hope he signs off after that. His work has been uneven since he returned (with super high peaks, but cavernous troughs), and it's probably time for new blood.
My suggested opening scene for that next special would be:
We revisit the last seconds of 15's regeneration, standing in the open doorway of the TARDIS as he vanishes in an amber shimmer of light, and is replaced by a familiar blonde WOMAN IN WHITE.
WOMAN IN WHITE: (looks smiling into camera) Oh, hello!
The camera angle changes to a WIDE EXT shot of the TARDIS in space, showing us a figure standing in thin air, facing the WOMAN IN WHITE.
FUGITIVE DOCTOR: Huh. I guess you must be the last guy's Watcher? Off you pop, I have work to do. A whole lotta running.
The WOMAN IN WHITE dematerialises, never to be seen again. Cue SERIES INTRO.
My only surprise is that they announced it now and not early next year. I wish they could have sorted this out a year ago and the BBC could have committed sooner, then we could have kept Ncuti Gatwa around as The Doctor.
Gatwa left at the end of his contract, forcing a rewrite and reshoot of the end of the last episode in February. He wasn’t staying around when his career was blowing up.
Sure, but in a world where Gatwa knew series 3 (or more) was renewed and he'd have a definitive job, he sticks around. He left due to the uncertainty.
Did he? I got the impression he was getting better offers post-Barbie and wanted the freedom to do them.
That's definitely a possibility. Proving either story is going to be hard until Gatwa reveals more several years from now. Officially the role of Doctor Who is demanding and Gatwa decided it was time to move on.
Officially Gatwa made the decision well ahead of his "final" episode. But we know a different ending was shot with leaked stills from a more happy ending, an ending where he didn't regenerate. We know the regeneration happened during reshoots, once he made the decision to leave.
As I see it, the reshoots happened in February. We, just now in October, learned of the future of Doctor Who, and that future is a special in December 2026.
When you look at the history of Doctor Who specials since 2005, when the reboot series started, we've pretty much got a new "holiday" special every year for the past 20 years. Not having a special in 2025 is weird.
When you look at the storyline set-up at the end of Gatwa's era, it's clear they planned for another season/series. When you hear Gatwa talk it's clear he wanted another season. He had more story to tell.
So why didn't he stay? Because the shows future has been uncertain for the past year. We, as viewers, didn't know that was the case until the finale aired, but behind the scenes no one knew what was planned.
Now, in October, a plan has been made. It's not the most well defined plan, and the only thing we know is December 2026. So the BBC has all of 2026 to sort it all out.
Meanwhile Gatwa is on the rise. He's getting offers and seeing projects he wants to do pass by. He's a young man. Doctor Who, by his own admission, was A LOT of work. But it is work. Most (modern) Doctors do three series. Russell Davies has clearly written a plan for a third series. Another quick season and regeneration, then he can move on... If we're moving forward. But instead... what if we just chill for a year? You're a rising actor in late 2024, are you OK with waiting until late 2025 or later, because keep in mind they can't promise a decision until after an a spinoff show airs.
Disney doesn't give a shit. They just popped in and hoped it would work out. Here's a pile of money, make the ROI worth it. BBC has been on the train since 2005 (technically way before). We all know you're going to pick up the slack if Disney doesn't... But that's a different fiscal year.
But Gatwa can't wait. Leaving Doctor Who isn't ideal. But contracts end. No one is really going to fault him. Even a BBC project would go, "Yeah, I get it."
That's what I think happened.
