Right, because the only alternative is reverse engineering professional hardware. /s That's seriously what you think? No wonder you feel "compromise" is your best option. Good luck with that.

You're acting like it's the only option, but it's not. You don't need to lock yourself into a walled garden. You don't need to buy into a sunk cost fallacy. Even participating a little perpetuates and reinforces the bullshit you're complaining about, and they're never gong to suddenly give in to the way things should be. Stop letting these companies hold what you want hostage, dictating how you view your options.

No idea who's the bigger asshole here, but it reminded me of a funny bit from years ago.

Radio communication between US and Canadian seamen -

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

Disagreeing with you is not a "right wing talking point". Talking about the subject of a post is not "obsessing" over them. You're focusing so hard on finding enemies where there are none, over things that don't matter. These people agree with you 90% and all you've done in this thread is treat them like shit and accuse them of things that never happened. That's a seriously misguided way to build a movement.

Lol. "If you don't use the overhyped new product that's ruining our main product, you can't use anything." Tech companies have always been..."unusual" in their reasoning, but this is another level of illogical.

You not appreciating someone reaching out a part of themselves to others doesn't make it lesser. That is something that makes the world better, not worse. More people should be so brave.

With the show being one of my favorites, I'm happy to say that I'm really enjoying the novels as well. That said, it keeps bugging me when the term "thrust gravity" is always used to describe something that's explicitly Newton's 3rd law - ie, not gravity. I'm probably not understanding something, but it bugs me to see a series that makes a point to be at least reasonably scientific to use a term that seems so wrong.

Side note: How come the third law missed out on natural feeling shorthand? 1st - inertia. 2nd - f=ma. 3rd - ???. Feels like something got overlooked there.

The next Bandcamp Friday is coming up and I like to look for new and interesting bands. Would love to hear about lemming artists, or even some favorites I've probably never heard of.

To add to the discussion, here are a few of my favs:

    • Sincere Engineer Found them on a random fluke and they quickly became a new favorite. Garage band style with just a great sound. A bit moody, but still high energy with really satisfying lyrics. They've got a new album that I plan to pick up myself.

    • Gunship Fairly well known, I think, but I picked up Unicorn shortly after it was released and listen to it front to back regularly. One of the few synthwave albums I actually enjoy. The ripping sax solos on pretty much every track certainly help.

    • aivi & surasshu A married duo that is probably most well known for their work on Steven Universe (that's how I found out about them). Their most recent album Meanwhile is such a wonderful mix of digital and acoustic. Very soothing melodies without lyrics. It always puts me in a pleasant mood.

I feel like it's pretty common in fiction these days, Game of Thrones being probably the most popular example with character viewpoint changing chapter-by-chapter and gradually weaving the different threads of plot into one connected whole. It's used in movies and television constantly, too.

The oldest I'm personally aware of is Dune, more-so in Dune Messiah, which I've read for the first time recently. I presume Herbert wasn't the first, though, and have been wondering how old the technique really is. Anyone have any insight (or even good guesses) on where it started?

Noticed I got caught in a wave of bans by the mod of apologiafreenews@lemmy.world after downvoting their obvious distraction propaganda. They got pissy in the comments because their first post got heavily downvoted. So they deleted that post, banned everyone that downvoted, then posted it again to game the system. Classy. I wonder how lemmy.world admins feel about mods abusing their authority like this.

*Also, still can't block communities we've been banned from on the community page. What a joke.

I'm not sure if it's a growth issue, or if I'm just getting tired of it personally, but the spamming of identical URLs over multiple instances is getting out of hand. Even worse when I block one post for whatever reason, only to have to repeat the task upteen number of times because one or more users (usually one) "helpfully" post the link in every tangentially related community.

Instead of that, it'd be better to have the front page (all/local/subscribed) automatically group any post of an identical URL into a single "post". In essence, each new post of that URL would create a separate discussion thread to the given community, and each thread could be listed under the "main" post similar to how crossposts currently are instead of cluttering up the front page.
