As an old curmudgeon, I refuse to learn what the Roblox is
post
I play Roblox with my son using Linux. The program is called Sober and itβs more than fine, itβs free, and updated regularly when Roblox security/program updates.
Similar boat... 4 years ago (or so) that is all my kid wanted. For those who care, Roblox purposely blocked Linux, there is nothing inherent in the OS that would make Roblox not run.
Took a bit of config but managed and my kid was able to play that garbage for a few months until the novelty wore off
Is there no way to play roblox currently? I thought there was a launcher that did weird stuff to the android version like we have for minecraft bedrock
Yes, it's called Sober. It is not official, and may lose functionality at any time due to updates to client-side anti-cheat.
My kids use it almost daily. Really only breaks for special events. Otherwise an update fixes all other issues.
Yeah, whatβs that about? Events like The Hunt and Iβm completely locked out. Sober just puts a βtotally normal, Roblox did this, and weβre sorryβ message up but Iβve never know the why.
My teenage daughter who will probably never try crack because she has Roblox instead gets deep into this stuff. She said that the developers of Sober disabled it for "The Hunt" voluntarily just to avoid drawing any ire from the Roblox developers since they're vaguely aware of Sober's existence and I guess tolerate it as long as it isn't causing problems for them. If anyone was accused of using Sober to cheat during such a high profile event it would be bad news for them.
ok ive played roblox for years (i have also stopped playing a couple of years ago) and what the heck is the hunt
No one should patronize Roblox. They exploit child labor for profit:
investigation: How Roblox is Exploiting Young Game Developers
Roblox Pressured Us to Delete Our Video. So We Dug Deeper.
When you hear "Roblox" you should think "child exploitation".
I don't see how Roblox is any worse than every other platform. If a child makes an app and puts it on Steam, Steam takes 30%. If a kid makes a YouTube channel, YouTube takes their cut of ad revenue.
Roblox made it easy enough to code that it got kids excited to write their own games. If any other game platform made it as easy, they'd have the same "child exploitation" problem.
A lot of it deals with the fact that Roblox doesn't pay you out until you accrue some critical mass of value. If a kid makes an app and puts it on Steam and it sells 2 copies, they're getting paid for those 2 copies. Not so for Roblox. You require 30,000 Robux to cash out - which seems to be quite a lot, actually, considering the documentation I'm reading on their own webpage advertises this with photos that show 97,493 total Robux earnings from this presumably rock-star developer that you want to be like, and buyable items costing between 80-600 Robux.
It should also be noted that I cannot locate any mention of a dollars-to-Robux ratio without an account, which I do not have and am not making, so God only knows what rate they actually pay you out at once you do manage to acquire your 30,000 Robux. The primary use case of earned Robux is to then invest them back into the in-game shop to purchase content that other users have made. Robux actively doesn't want you cashing out and makes it as difficult as possible to do so.
I'm personally not too upset about a game primarily made from user created content, I think it's kind of cool, but the way they've tied real money into the process feels very icky and scumbaggish to me. My particular issue with Roblox is the rampant pedophilia and sexual grooming that the devs are either unwilling to alienate (since, presumably, this population makes up a not-insignificant percentage of their user base) or else actively in cahoots with, because this has been a known problem for many years but approximately zero steps have been taken to address it.

Isn't that how YouTube works?
I googled and 30k robux is $109.
This post is crazy misinformed besides the 30k robux thing. Here's a calculator for robux conversions:
https://romonitorstats.com/devex-calculator/. The DevEx program is whack but I think it pays better than Spotify.
You can make quite a lot. Look at Creatures of Sonoria. The real issue with Roblox is the zero age controls. Putting pedophiles right next to children since like 2003.
Roblox didn't just "make it easy", it's their entire business model, which is the problem. Watch the videos. The discussion isn't about how much of a percentage Roblox takes, it's about how kids basically get pressured to work in digital sweatshops to create the content which is what Roblox sells.

If you're not using Hannah Montana Linux you should just go eat poison and save the Linux community from your existence.
I thought for a sec this was calvinandhobbes@lemmy.world, anyone knows what happened to it? It's been a week since the bot posted something there
It is definitely older than 2025 because you can play roblox on linux in 2025.
Yes it can.
calvin's dad wouldn't be upset by the number of linux derivatives. he'd be thrilled. a whole new world to be autistic about.
Newbies should just install Ubuntu.
It works and is well supported. Year later go distrohopping.
Thatβs what I suggest anyway.
Um ackshually Hannah Montana Linux is obviously superior in every way. /s
Mint is better
I'd just recommend Pop!_OS then. NVidia drivers can come preinstalled if you need them (not that it's super hard to install on Ubuntu) and no Snap bullshit - anything you install via apt uses a deb, instead of sneakily installing a snap. Flatpak still remains an option and you CAN install snaps if you want to. COSMIC as it is now, is GNOME reconfigured a bit to be a bit keyboard-friendlier and will soon be replaced by COSMIC the brand new desktop environment. Otherwise it's fairly similar to Ubuntu.
Also, Kubuntu or Mint are Ubuntu with an UI that is more familiar to someone coming from Windows. They work more or less the same.
Yeah, when I tried basic Ubuntu about a year ago, it must not have liked something about my two monitors or Nvidia GPU.
The whole desktop was shitting itself, and at one point I could see my mouse on one monitor but the clicks were taking place on the other monitor. It's a nightmare to debug things when you can't accurately click any windows or buttons.
Endeavor and Pop both worked out of the box.
My partner tried popos and it was awful. Iirc, it didn't even seem to support her multiple monitors? I can't remember for sure, but we had some issues and bailed pretty quickly. She and I both are now rocking Kubuntu, which, as you mentioned, was a much easier transition from Windows for her (and me), though I'd have her try bazzite today if Kubuntu wasn't already set up.
I believe that Mint does away with the Snap bullshit as well. That was one of the main reasons I chose it for my girlfriend's laptop.
What's best for a noob who wants to use pacman/yay/aur?
Because of fragmentation linux will continue to stay behindπ so many bugs and issues yet people still create their own solution instead of contributing to the existing one. Its like a curse..
Sure, but there's just enough mainline distros. You only really have choice if you're looking for it. And everybody else will ask someone to help and they'll most likely just install something of their choice/what they're familiar with, after considering the user's requirements.
Really? You guys only complains about Roblox? Not the crt mon? Not the monitor size? Not the horizontal pc case? Not kids able to complete a full sentence? M$ would drop support for old kb and mouse if they can. Only linuxer would spare their love for old hw.
Aren't CRT monitors actually quite nice for pixel art games? Maybe the dad just really likes his old games
He's an og quakeworld player running it in 320x200 sw@120Hz/fps. It's native on Linux since 1998, so the switch for him makes sense.
I've got a Windows 10 machine that can't be upgraded that I plan to install some flavor of Linux on, probably Mint.
When I get around to it.
That's my project for this weekend or next. Gotta figure out how to make it play nice with my Wacom and NAS.
Are you expecting it to be more complicated than "plug tablet into USB" and "connect computer to network and direct your file browser to the NAS' IP?"
I'm running Pop!OS on a different old laptop, so I know the basic functionality works out of the box, but that I'm going to have to resort to the terminal to get the express keys mapped on the Wacom. And the NAS connection has been a second-class citizen; it's been difficult to just browse to it in a lot of apps. I suspect I need to properly mount a the NAS as a drive for it to play nice. Neither are things I've bothered with on the Pop system since I've just been using it as a web portal, but I want the new device to be more functional.
It wasn't that difficult for me to set up my NAS to automount in my fstab file. I'm pretty sure I just followed this guide and went into my router to make sure the NAS was assigned a static IP address on my LAN. Until I set the IP, it would almost always get the same IP address from my router, but on the rare occasion where it didn't it would cause some of my self-hosted media services to fail to start at boot when mounting it failed, and it would bork the whole thing. Still, that was more user error than anything else.
Speaking of games popular among little kids, my kids are starting to talk about Minecraft. Can I get away with having them play VoxeLibre instead, or would it be literally the "we have [X] at home" meme IRL?
Nah, Minecraft is a far better game, but I would recommend playing on Java Edition (The original version) of the game only, and use an open-source launcher like PrismLauncher: https://prismlauncher.org/
Nice bonus: It comes with built-in tools for modding your installed instances, streamlining Java versions (which vary depending what game version is played), and even the ability to download community modpacks directly from the launcher! :)
I've been playing Minecraft since 2014, still having fun :)
I'd just work with Minecraft itself. It's great for educating kids in a variety of fields, from counting and multiplication, all the way up into computer science and anthropology. Voxelibre will be a hard sell with it being less-featured overall. Minecraft is also very powerful socially, similar to how card games and competitive games were in the 90s/still are today.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.
I'm not necessarily opposed to buying proprietary games as a matter of principle, but I know Minecraft got bought out by Microsoft and apparently now is infested with microtransactions and shit (bletch!), so I was really hoping to avoid it.
(Wasn't there some sort of free version for the Raspberry Pi? How's that work? And would it be adequate, or would I need the full-fat Java version for my kids to participate fully in the social aspects?)
The version that sucks is the Bedrock Edition (also affectionately known as Bugrock Edition since it's clear Mojang Redmond has no idea how to code a game in C++), and is the version tailored for phones, consoles, and as a "Windows exclusive".
Java edition is the original game descended from Indie beginnings, and has none of Bugrock's problems (No microtransactions, no cross-promotions, runs on other operating systems, and fully moddable with no paid mods). It's the version everyone with a PC plays on, and I guarantee you most Bedrock players would switch if it was supported on their hardware (phones and game consoles).
The raspberry pi version was based on the alpha edition of phone minecraft, and didn't have multiplayer or any gameplay outside of building. I really don't think your kids would be happy playing it.
Minecraft java edition doesn't have microtransactions baked in the game. Some servers may have them but servers are ran by users.
Unless your kids want to play with their friends on bedrock edition which you can't play on linux
this is a good bit, but if you read Calvin and Hobbes, calvin's dad is hella autism coded. he'd be THRILLED to see how many distros there are.
As much as I wish this was a real C&H comic, none of these problems existed in 1995. Roblox didn't even exist yet.

Roblox doesn't have a Linux build??
