A new psychological study has found that people who report favorable views of Donald Trump also tend to score higher on measures of callousness, manipulation, and other malevolent traits—and lower on empathy and compassion. The findings, based on two large surveys of U.S. adults, shed light on how personality traits relate to political beliefs, including support for Trump and conservative ideology. The research was recently published in the Journal of Research in Personality.

Uneducated, child-level emotions, an inability to discuss political viewpoints, and actual anger when criticizing their cult leader, who could have seen that coming.

Yeah. They were great about condemning child abuse while still making sure to protect the rapists.

    Well, it is a spectrum.

While I don't love the idea of having a Romney in the White House....I'd take it over Taco. I'm not sure that makes Romney "good", but it definitely would be a lot less bad than conservatism unchained like it is under Taco.

I don't pay too much attention to popes because, well, I just don't give a fuck and religion has zero authority over me in a secular nation. But I do realize it's a spectrum there, too, and if they elect someone who has more modern views on things - I guess that's good for the people that look to popes for what to think and do?

  • That's like saying "from the standpoint of a sea the Caspian Sea isn't that big"

PR aside, every single Pope has been the head of one of the oldest and most conservative organizations in the world, and almost certainly THE organization with the most child rape of any in absolute numbers.

That's not a post that allows for much ACTUALLY progressive action, no matter how much press it gets when you say "LGBTQ+ people are actually people and Palestinians might be too"

Indeed. I wish all the conservatives in my life could somehow have the fever break. I honestly think if some intervention was done, especially in their media diet[1], AND they got some form of therapy, whether it was also pharmaceutical or not, I seriously think at least half of them could be weaned off of conservatism.

Sadly, there is likely no way that intervention is going to be done at scale. Sometimes spouses or family do it, but I think it's quite rare. Whole lot of men have zero friends and very little family in their lives, I think and Faux and hate radio is always going to be a flick away for people that don't have real people in their lives. And the con elite know this. It's often why this stuff is pushed out there at a loss, even if it loses money for years, like Faux.

[1] I remember reading recently that even having to have moderate weekly/daily amounts of something like CNN (lol), IIRC, would tend to moderate their views.

    Of course.

Even amidst the overt efforts to eatablish an authoritarian police state, this administration is most notable for being petty, vindictive and wantonly destructive. It's as if even instituting neo-feudalistic/fascistic/plutocratic oligarchy is a secondary goal, and the primary goal is simply to be cruel, selfish, petulant and mean.

So of course those are the qualities one will find in its supporters. Most of them don't even have a coherent ideology - all they have is hate and a petty and childish desire to make those they hate suffer.

Seriously. Next time, ask one of them that repeats "maga!" without any sense of irony what that even means. I've done this for at least one of my in-laws in Taco's first term.

I tried to ask what "great" is supposed to mean. What is Taco going to do for his policy? I also asked when it was last "great" and when did it stop being "great"? I didn't try to "debate" him, I was just asking more clarifying questions about his statements.

Seriously, they find this truly baffling, by the way. They expect either: people will get mad and react to them (thus, "liberal: owned"), or to give a thumbs-up and yes-and them with all the latest hate radio/Faux talking points, or what most people do, which is to try to change the topic or wander to another room, etc. Asking more questions about their claims is just not something that happens in most cases, I think.

About the only specifics on any kind of policy seemed to involve punching down on others. Getting women in line, showing people with degrees that Taco is actually smarter than all of them, othering any non-xtians, most especially Muslims and atheists, "closing the border" (wtf?), an obsession with trans and gays and what they are seemingly "getting away with", Blacks being put in their place because too many quotas, and so on.

When I asked how their life would be any better....it was even less coherent. I couldn't really get anything out of them. It was all about these stupid petty phantom grievances about what other people - mostly in big cities they don't even live near - were up to, and about reining them in.

The one that kills me - my brother does this - is framing it as a response to imaginary opponents.

He does these monologues about the libs or the woke mob or the city people or whoever in which he first mimics what they're supposedly saying, then responds to it with some copy and paste bit of MAGA dogma.

He doesn't even engage with actual people - it's just the strawmen in his head.

Sometimes when I'm talking to someone I know like this, I have to refrain from being snarky and saying something like "show me on the doll where Obama hurt you".

But in all seriousness, I do tend to ask lots of questions of these people. I think some of them think I'm just doing trolling IRL, because they seem to legit be taken aback. They are used to people taking one of three paths (push-back from the now-owned liberal, emphatic agreement that maybe comes just shy of high-fives and a chest-bump, and others trying to ignore/shun such people), and I take a fourth. Maybe there is just a bit of a trolling element, but honestly, I'm morbidly curious.

Asking things like who are they talking about and where did they see this kind of thing when they are doing the strawman thing. And how were you harmed by Clinton's policies, or Obama's or Biden's. And which specific policies? Also, which specific policies of Taco's have improved the economy and/or their lives in quantifiable ways?

I don't know if this causes any stir of thought in them at all, but often, I find that they don't have answers for any of this. I'm able to keep a cool head and ask questions in a calm and indoor voice and not react in the predictable ways that they think a liberal will act, and that's really key - because they do tend to get emotional in the process and sometimes, the person they are talking to not getting emotional can make them even more angry, at least in the moment.

I think it's because both are happening, they're just coming from different sources. The authoritarian goals are managed by the oligarchs and channeled through the (easily manipulated) narcissist in Chief, while the petty vindictiveness stems directly from him.

Whatever it takes, make them politcally irrelevant, then you can think about improving something.

I honestly do think quite a bit of it is constant saturation of hate radio and Faux News, combined with loneliness and/or undiagnosed mental disorders.

People are alone in their cars quite a bit and I don't know if you've driven through certain parts of the country, but if you don't have podcasts/satellite radio in your car, there is almost nothing but country music or hate radio in some parts of it. The con elite knew what they were doing when they funded all this stuff, often at a loss.

I bet more than half of the people deep in the conservative cult could be deprogrammed, but I just don't see anything like that happening at scale. And it would be way too easy for them to slip back into old ways, since it's like junk food in a food desert - it's ever-present and easily accessible nearly everywhere, and there is virtually nothing healthy offered to counter that terrible diet, whether it's a food diet or a media diet.

If you're interested in the methodology used, here's a link to the full study.

Essentially, they didn't ask if the person thought they were a psychopath; They asked questions to which the answers reveal underlying character traits. Of course, no method of data collection is perfect. If you want to know what steps were taken to filter out insincere subjects, that information can also be found within the full study.

Doing the blanket psycho-analysis on "Voters of Party X" is great content but miserable politics. You end up with this weird inversion, wherein "being angry" gets coded as "Trump supporter". And that leads to talking-head pundits accusing college protesters, angry constituents, and anyone unhappy with their sitting elected rep of being "MAGA", regardless of their actual political beliefs.

Only when their anger aligns with major political policies of the current regime. No one is looking at someone belligerently pissed off at trans exclusion or lack of action on climate change and saying "Heh, Trump voters, ammirite!?" Yes, someone who is pissed off at gun control laws is not necessarily a Trump supporter, but if that is their main platform of concern that gets them riled up, barring any other context, it's not unusual to put them in that camp. Nor is it ultimately all that harmful, as far as I can see, to do that even if turns out to be innacurate.

I have them in my family, and I can confirm all of these traits. They've always had these traits, but they are magnified since Trump's first term, and in the second now they've flown entirely off the handle.

I've shared that in concerned with how unmarked cars full of masked men are kidnapping people, and their response was that I needed therapy. When I attended the BLM protests, they called me a fascist.

    It's insane. Full stop.

This second term is far worse. Traveled Mississippi with my Asian wife last weekend. Folks were not nearly as friendly as usual. I was like, the fuck?

She's Filipino (half-Japanese), so basically an Asian Mexican, and no shit, these white racists can't tell the difference. Did the slanty eyes not clue you in?!

Only times I've felt unwelcome in that state was 20-years ago when blacks gave my white-ass the side eye. Now black folk are friendly enough and it's the whites looking at me funny.

Expecting that whole state to collapse in on itself like the house at the end of Poltergeist.

Hatred is twisted empathy. Demonizing your neighbors only feeds into this. You can use this in your life. If you hate yourself and your egregious, unforgivable faults, try starting with loving others first. It reverberates back to you.

When Nazi alleged war criminals were held in Nuremburg, Captain G. Gilbert was assigned to the prison to serve as their psychologist. He administered Rorschach and IQ tests, and spoke with them at length. He came to the following conclusion:

“In my work with the defendants I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.”

“This paper was several years in the making, starting as a result of the 2016 election, and was designed to address why some people might view favorably a political figure with a history of business failures, bankruptcies, misogynistic statements caught on video, use of charity money for a self-portrait, etc,” explained study author Craig Neumann, a Regents Professor of Psychology at the University of North Texas.
