I've been growing my physical music collection for a little while now. Mostly vinyl records, but also some CDs. I've also been buying physical PC games whenever I see them. But for some reason, I'm not as drawn to having a physical movie collection.

If I did start collecting, it'd probably be just DVDs and not Blu-rays. (The Blu-ray DRM bothers me.) A few places near me have DVDs, and they're pretty cheap right now. However, since I rarely watch a movie more than once, I just don't really care to have a personal library of them.

Do you have one?

I have a growing physical movie and TV collection. You can easily get around the Blu-Ray DRM with MakeMKV to make backups, but you'll need to watch out for revocation lists. You'll need a 4K drive that is LibreDrive compatible, and then you'll need to flash the firmware with something that can't be bricked by a revocation list.

  • Yes. I buy really weird DVDs used. Sometimes they are like $5 on Amazon. I like to collect what I consider the very best and the very worst films of all time. I'm a sucker for good bad movies.

    Yes mostly box set.

Given how streaming video "purchases" have turned out to be fake, I should start expanding it again.

    Not a ton.

A few hundred DVD s and blurays, maybe a dozen vhs, and maybe a half terabyte of digital.

My thing about physical film media is the extras. Music? You can snag liner notes and cover art easy enough. But a good DVD is going to have all kinds of extras, navigable in one place with less effort. You often have better sound, and you definitely have less hassle with subtitles or alternate dialogue tracks.

The thing I hate is that no storage media is eternal. I've had hard to replace movies just fail completely due to age.

I have two big CD folders with movies on DVD as well as PS2 games. Only thing I have to watch 'em on is my PS2 (unless the PS5 can read DVDs? I never thought to try 🤔). My PC has no disk drive, and I don't have a regular dvd player. Even if the PS5 can, I doubt it works with burned disks and half the movies are the backup copies I have for originals I lost. I also need a composite to HDMI thing for the PS2; my TV has no composite inputs :/

A few records, but the rest is digital and backed up.

I still have a few DVDs of obscure stuff that is hard to find on the internet. But everything else is in files, mostly "MKV 1080p HEVC" or something equivalent.

Yes, my wife had a bunch before we even met and we’ve watched all of them during the past five years. I tried buying a box set of Hercule Poirot but got a box of the most crap disks that were skipping on first play.

Yep. DVDs mostly but some VHS in there. Also the library is still a good source for DVDs(and CDs and LPs).

My main prize is a VHs tape of an airing of the Doctor Who episode of The Chase that still has the Beatles scene intact.
