I've been growing my physical music collection for a little while now. Mostly vinyl records, but also some CDs. I've also been buying physical PC games whenever I see them. But for some reason, I'm not as drawn to having a physical movie collection.

If I did start collecting, it'd probably be just DVDs and not Blu-rays. (The Blu-ray DRM bothers me.) A few places near me have DVDs, and they're pretty cheap right now. However, since I rarely watch a movie more than once, I just don't really care to have a personal library of them.

Do you have one?

  1. "Old web" things were replaced by VC-backed apps because the apps had a better user experience, not just because big tech conspired to kill the old web. People wanted to use social media instead of RSS feeds because social media is easier to use than RSS feeds. Ditto for Discord replacing IRC. People here sometimes act like IRC declined because of a bigtech conspiracy against it. IRC declined because you had to message a freaking bot once a month to keep your nickname.
  2. Wayland and systemd solve a lot of problems and are overall a step in the right direction.

I remember this game being talked about simply because it was good AND because it basically had no promotion done for it. Like, every review said, "Activision just released a perfectly solid game out of nowhere for some reason."

I hadn't really thought about the fact that Ubuntu (and many others, apparently) don't have hibernation. I switched to Debian about a year ago, and I wasn't sure what the Hibernate button did when I saw it for the first time. But after I searched to find out, I started using it all the time.

Calipers. I bought a cheapo pair (this one) because it was convenient for measuring the parts on a mechanical watch that I was modding. Now I use them all the time around the house for finding the size of nuts, bolts, rope thickness, etc.

OK, I guess it makes more sense if it was newly added. That still means that I didn't notice it for more than a year, though. (I have Tahoe installed, which came out September 2025.) It definitely seems like a bad design decision.

While I was playing around with the MacOS search bar (because I had complained about it in the other thread), I just found out that there is a row of icons that let you filter what you are searching for.

But these icons only show up if you wiggle the mouse. If you don't move the mouse, these icons never show up.

This is a keyboard navigation feature. I have never freaking seen those icons before! I've been using a Mac for ten years now, and not once have I moved the mouse when the search box is open. You use a keyboard shortcut to bring up the search box, and then you... just type something! That's the whole point! Why would they hide that until you move the mouse?!

Yeah! I've run into that, too. "keyboard" does not show the keyboard settings, and "security" does not show the security settings. And I know that they did in an earlier version; I used those all the time.

edit: OK, now it actually does, but it still sucks.

    1. It's not the first item in the list.
    2. At first it shows a bunch of files that have "security" in their path name, then the Privacy & Security setting pops in about a second later.
    3. It shows up... twice? They are the third and fourth options and they are the same thing. Those both go to the same place.

Religiously unaffiliated people most strongly believe that empathy is a foundational moral value. Note that doesn't necessarily mean atheists; people who believe in God but don't associate with any particular religion would be in that group. In fact, I can't find any information about whether atheists are included in this survey, or if this was exclusively a survey of religious people.

Interesting (but not exactly surprising) results here. Makes me glad that "religiously unaffiliated" is the fastest growing religion in the U.S.

The original cotton string was starting to wear down. It broke once already, but it was just the very end that snapped off, so I could just tie a new knot and call that the new end. But now it was starting to do it again. I bought some paracord from the hardware store and replaced it with that.

Right after I pulled the original string out of the waistband, I remembered that someone once told me that you can tie the new string to the old string, and then pull the old string out and thereby pull the new string into the hole, instead of trying to push the new string through the hole. That would have been a good thing to have remembered about 30 seconds earlier.
