And nothing of value was lost.

Even though, there were some entertaining YouTube videos about breaking it or getting stuck in sand. Many things carry an unforeseen positive side with them.

Who would have thought? Oh wait, pretty much everyone.

    They sold 43,000 of them.

    Chevy sold 7,400 EV Silverados.

Ford sold under 100,000 F150 Lightnings total over 3 years.

Ford sells 75,000 F150s a month. EV is contrary to pickup culture.

I can't believe they sold so few of them. I feel like I see them far too often for the sales numbers to be so low. Either way those are pitiful sales figures considering they ramped up an entire assembly line for them.

Maverick has sold over 600,000 in 5 years with about 400,000 being the hybrid. It's not an EV but just for reference.

I think ev may be contrary to giant pickup but smaller ones would have a reasonable market.

Also the ice f150 sales numbers also include the super duty 250, 350, etc. models.

IDK if that's true, I'm not a truck guy though. But, I think the bigger issue with EV trucks is that they're simply worse. You can't tow anything with an EV truck, I think if truck buyers got the benefits of an EV without having to sacrifice what their current trucks are capable of wed see the adoption needed.

I tow in mine just fine, about 150 miles range with my rv.

Sorry, I didn't mean its literally impossible to tow something with an EV truck. My point was more that at best, that's halve the range of an ICE F150. So an EV will perform worse and cost more, that's not very appealing to most buyers. EV cars had the same problem, today though an EV car has the same range as an ICE car.

That range is precisely why truck buyers don't buy these. A gasoline F150 gets twice that range in the same situation. So you get half the range and recharging takes several times longer.

Don't get me wrong, I like the F150 Lightning EV, but Ford really needed to offer a range extender as an option.

I also am not a truck person, but I believe your assessment is mostly correct. Truck people who use trucks as trucks, not the city folk who use them like a status icon, want a truck because of its utility. The Cybertuck, along with other full EV trucks, just don't match the utility of their diesel and gasoline counterparts.

    • EVs are ridiculously heavy, and their power to weight ratio as it pertains to offroading is pretty bad. The weight also makes recovery a nightmare, as they get stuck in mud and wet sand often and practically need a construction crane to pull them out.

    • Towing capacity is not as good. In addition, range, especially while towing, is pretty bad compared to non-EV options.

    • Recreational use is also pretty muted because there is no engine making sound. You dont hear or feel the rumble from an engine. I can personally feel this one even as a road car fan.

    • Charging infrastructure absolutely sucks anywhere someone is going to use a truck for anything other than a status symbol. Farmers don't have easy access to charge stations, for example, and it would be very expensive and time consuming to expand into their atea because they are so spread out.

Basically, every reason a person would choose a truck for, is a really bad choice to pick an EV truck, except "it's needlessly expensive and makes people think I have a lot of money."

I think advancements in a hybrid electric technology could make some benefits, but all in all, the diesel and gas utility is not matched by EVs still. I still think hydrogen needs more research and could be the way better option.

Prescribing some weird qualifications of acceptability is... weird.

Truck people who use trucks as trucks, not the city folk who use them like a status icon, want a truck because of its utility

Here's my cherry picked class of valid subject to support my opinion.

Ignoring that the Cybertruck was rejected by "truck people" because it was uniquely strange (versus electric trucks broadly) & "that city folk who use them like a status icon" probably make up the overwhelming majority of truck sales, there's still more to consider.

Most fleet trucks are basic ass 2WD long beds. Real "truck people" don't look for off road capabilities and real off roaders are choosing SUVs over trucks every time. Your hypothetical farmer on dirt roads is probably outnumbered by municipal services and contractors just wanting to throw a miter saw in the bed and pull up to a driveway 1:100.

But EV trucks were rejected by the markets. Why?

    • A lack of downward pressure - continued fossil fuel subsidies and almost total lack of government pressure for fleets to switch or for new buyers to choose electric.

    • Poor economic conditions at launch - combined with the above, EV trucks launched well after EV cars, at a higher price point than ICE trucks, and at a time when most consumers were cash-strapped. With both options available, very few were able to afford the theoretically cheaper-to-run EV truck.

    • Culture wars & confused marketing - you touched on this but gave it too much emphasis IMO. EV trucks just got brought in to generic culture war garbage. The people who like EVs unfairly don't like trucks; the people who like trucks unfairly don't like electric drivetrains. Ford and GM blth made cars they din't knlw how to sell. The Cybertruck was incidentally the one truck to get past this, just not in a way I think most of us would find agreeable.

I've been flamed on here enough times to know better but damn if they weren't a guilty pleasure for me. Only a company with hundreds of billions in undeserved and unearned capital could put something like that into full production and it was the single speck of shared taste I found myself having with Elon Musk.

LOL, wonder why they did this after the election? I heard someone talking on a podcast about how they see people laughing and pointing and taking pictures of one that is often sitting in a parking lot near them...

Anyway, if you want to signify what a complete asshole you are, this car screams that.

Never seen one in real life and I don't care to. I'm probably safe because I doubt one would survive the shale roads or a Canadian prairie winter anyway.

I live in Texas, and while I suspect most people here like pickup trucks, I detest them. Only a pickup that is all beaten up from heavy use or seems to be actively being used can be forgiven. Everything else is just an eyesore to me. And if you live in Texas and you want to know a shortcut for identifying the worst drivers on the road, just look for any large meticulously maintained pickup truck. The driver is guaranteed to be an asshole.

I still remember the day I first saw the Cybertruck. I couldn't believe they found a way to make pickup trucks uglier. I never believed they'd actually manufacture any or get anybody to buy one. It was just so obvious. Nobody would want to drive an embarrassment like that.

That sales chart is funny, even when the Cybertruck sold the most, it only barely managed to get above a tenth the sales Musk Expected. 🤡

Whenever the Tesla Supercharger by my house breaks down, a small fleet of Cybertrucks appears. There’s one truck per worker. I guess because it’s also too small on the inside? The “truck” can’t even attempt to fit a sheet of plywood in the back so I’ll assume it also can’t fit more than one person inside.
