I love that all the campaigns to keep people from voting/voting blue failed. ❤️

News agencies are calling this a historic blowout, but from an external onlookers perspective, isn't this really close?

It's still too close, but that's just how our (shitty) system works. Most seats aren't going to flip. Alabama will always vote Republican and California will always vote Democrat, so our focus is really only on the close races.

We gained 25 seats in the House, seven in the Senate and five governors. That's a huge swing.

What about when CA was red mere decades ago? Always? Things flip and change and come and go.

If Dems don't cater to the working class, angry disenfranchised people will continue voting out of frustration.

    Here's a more updated version:

It's no supermajority, but it is a blowout

As a non American, I'm confused by these graphs. What is the middle grey section?

    It says "gained 7, lost 7" but there's a 60 seat difference..

Does that mean the dems were already 40 odd ahead before this election?

  • source
  • hideshow 2 child comments
  • [–] 13 points 2 days ago

The ballots are still being counted. The middle grey areas are races that are still too close to call or don't have enough ballots counted to say definitively.

7 gained means so far the democrats have flipped 7 seats previously held by republicans.

It's a little complicated. ALL House seats are up for election every two years. Senate seats are up every six. Governor seats are up to individual state rules.

So some seats are always up for grabs, others not.

    What were the 2024 numbers?

Red had a thin majority in house and senate

Now blue has a slightly larger senate majority and landslide house. It would not take that much red cooperation to make overruling a veto be possible.

And hopefully can skip the conservative Dem divas threatening to trash the majority, as we had under Biden.

Yeah I don’t have faith in the Dems. Very happy maga movement is dead obviously but Dems are owned opposition, I’m expecting a whole lot of nothing over the next 2 years followed by campaigns centered on the lack of action from Dems.

    Theoretically, yes.

But I'm not optimistic that it will actually happen.

Me either, although him being a lame duck that has been repudiated by voters countrywide might make Republicans hesitate to continue following him in lockstep. He's incredibly unpopular and will be gone in two years.

I agree. If Trump just pretends to behave then nothing will happen.

But he knows consequences are actually possible now which hopefully is enough to affect his behavior.

What are the chances of cooperation?

They've been operating like a cult for the most part. Will they disobey their dear leader?

It really depends on how close to a supermajority the Dems get on their own. It’s expected for Trump to take some radical military action in the next few weeks, that could be the trigger to unify them around either restricting his power or fully removing him from office.

I would put the odds of super majority action at “quite low” but during my entire life time the odds have been “hahahahahahahahahahaha I forgot that existed”

Dear Leader is dying of dementia in front of the world. This has not escaped them. When he dies or can no longer be on camera, the cult dies. They get this. The thrashing the GOP took has not escaped them. I expect defections on votes next year.

If they dont immediately remove Trump then the VP will be running as an incumbent for two more elections. The pedos need trump in office for the two year mark to ensure vp gets two terms

i dont think vance is electable as a president, they need someone like "trump" and i doubt any other candidate can outrump trump.

Yeah but it was the backup plan, he will get the office if they impeach. If they dont impeach until Jan then he gets to run for two terms instead of one. They own the media and are clearly willing to spend big on getting their way and a single election is easier interfere with.

I'm pretty sure the timing doesn't work out for that to even be possible.

    Certainly not likely either way

How so? If someone takes over the office eith less than half the term remaining it doesn't count toward their own two term limitation. If an impeachement happened today or February it would mean the potential difference of that person in office being four years. One term plus the greater than two years, two terms plus to greater less than two years.

You don't know what the future holds.

Perhaps some things will change for the better.

At the very least, Donald doesn't have as much power as before.

I don't know the future. I can hope that things will actually get better than they currently are, but the past has taught me whenever this happens and there's a majority control of each branch, not a whole lot goes on.

There are a couple folks actually trying to move things forward, though it seems like the majority are fine with maintaining the status quo, even if that status quo keeps shifting right every time they don't have majority control. I wonder if Bernie's 32 hour work week bill was already shot down or if it's still in play.

As for the oranges power, the only thing that changed for him is thankfully a significant decrease in making any lasting changes in the law. He's still going to do whatever the hell he wants without any fucks given for the proper forms, laws, or protocols followed. Overreaching executive orders, Supreme Court complicity, and him just eroding nearly every single foreign relationship are still his main methods of operation.

The foreign relations are already fkd. Other countries aren't sitting on their hands, waiting for Donald to throw another fit. Democrats have to decide if they'll do something about the concerns of the workers.

Poor, pissed off voters who felt like nothing ever changes were successfully duped by orange. They didn't all gravitate towards the worst aspects of maga. It's easier to write it all off as racism than to listen to their grievances.

Is the Right going to help move things towards the Left? No. Of course no. The Left isn't doing much other than neoliberal "free-market" crony-capitalism either. Their feet need to be held to fire and reminded they have a lot to lose as well if another Trump is elected again.

I read how people on here said that public executions are a part of fascism.

Do you think these republicans are intentionally fascist or just of fascist "nature"?
