Another article that confuses 3-4 corporate websites with the hundreds of millions of websites on "The Internet"

That was my first thought too... "The internet has been ruined by capitalists!" says the capitalist website.

It's easier to block it here, and it doesn't get forced down your throat in the first place. If Elon Twatface came on here, everyone could ignore him and he'd go away. He couldn't buy it and force his bullshit on us either.

There are 100% communities on lemmy ran by malicious individuals pushing shit that benefits elon musk. How are you so sure he hasn't already released his bot army on lemmy?

That's expected. The difference is the Fediverse gives the users the flexibility to employ our own strategies for dealing with it. When a bunch of money is clearly being spent astroturfing the tiktok/ig/reddit algorithms, you can't do anything about it. But here, instances can decide to defederate from other instances that aren't properly moderating such content. Yeah, Elon can make his own instance, he can even spend money creating bots on other instances, but the Fediverse gives us the tools to cull them.

The thing is, normal people have no idea what you're talking about. Defederate? Instances?

These are nonsense words to everyone that hasnt been here since its conception.

You're switching your argument. Is your argument that the Fediverse can also be manipulated by the wealthy, or that people outside the Fediverse don't understand what the Fediverse is? Those are two different conversations.

Well, one I think is protected against by the design of the Fediverse for the reasons I mentioned. For the other, I don't think you're wrong to say most people don't know about why the Fediverse is designed how it is, but I think democracy in general faces the exact same challenge.

    As TJ put it,

If a [social media platform] expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of [non-enshittification], it expects what never was and never will be.'

I do think there is a sort of balancing act that has to happen to maintain a working Fediverse/democracy, but the hope is that, if you design your system correctly, you get a positive feedback loop that preserves the critical functions that retain power with the people, not the capital.

The most successful attack against open platforms is the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish loop. And if you squint, that's the same strategy capitalism employs to attack democracy.

Yes but by it's very nature, the Fediverse can resist

Anywhere and everywhere. It happens even in communities that have a rule against it. Which is the only way I can see it since I have blocked all the pro-llm/slop gen communities.

I am glad that there are truly discerning lemmings that are calling it out. I just saw one earlier this morning. I didn’t even notice it was slop until I saw a comment pointing it out.

I downvote all slop but I'm terrible at discerning it, so if the consensus in the thread is that it's slop, I downvote. It's the best i can do while I learn to tell it apart. It keeps getting harder and I think it's a terrible idea to throw around AI accusations without being sure. That could crater someone's self esteem.

The fediverse has 0 safety rails against oligarch takeover. We only survive here because we don't have enough users to matter to them.

Large swaths of fediverse block Threads.

Its not perfect but it is a guardrail, and better than any other social networking software I know.

Least outside of Wafrn, which is also too horny, gay, and furry-coded to be commercialized.

That's a good solution as well as it turns out.

I don't understand the whole blocking Threads thing. How is forcing your own users to make a Threads account not actively helping Meta?

The fediverse has 0 safety rails against oligarch takeover.

The guardrail is about keeping meta sludge from people who want to interact with it, not fixing the rubes that like the duping.

If you choose to directly interact with a meta product that's your own damn fault. You can't fix stupid, but you can contain it away from the people who don't want to interact with it.

Nothing's perfect, but there isn't one main database to control. They can make the independent user harder to hear and to talk to others, but it's far better than one domain where there's absolute say on what can be seen and said. The main lemmy sites could go down and the rest would function, and others would grow to take their place. They're only larger because they were active first and people weren't aware they could pick others, or preferred to go where most were so it would be more active.
