the Democratic Party is really showing its ass this cycle. I hope the DSA continues to gain traction - it’s not perfect but it’s better.

Primaries are over, your choices are:

A. Person who won't defend you.

B. Person actively trying to kill you and/or put you in a Gulag.

Vote for the DNC or whoever is most likely to win against the GOP.

That may be the case in your state or municipality, but it's not true for everyone. Many states, like Washington or California, have top two primaries where it is not uncommon to have two Dems running against each other in the generals.

The first line of the article says "On Saturday, Josh Turek, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Iowa,"

Josh Turek is running alone against a Republican. Vote for the worst Democrats, because they are factually better than the best Republican.

If you make it past the first sentence, you’ll discover Erin is making a broader point, and using Iowa merely as al lens to focus it

Before I make my case, I want to be clear about what I am asking, because the people who respond to this piece will not be. I am not asking any of my readers to vote Republican. I am not asking anyone to stay home and sit the election out. I am not asking my readers to abandon the Democratic Party, which I want to win in a wave election this year. And I am not asking anyone to abstain from every Democratic politician who has ever taken a single poor or uneducated stance toward transgender people. What I am asking is that transgender people, and the people who care about us, find the line they would draw on any other fundamental human rights issue, and draw it here: do not give the worst anti-transgender Democrats your vote. Leave that line blank, vote for every other candidate, and make sure the story of 2026 is not that the Democratic Party has to accept anti-transgender policy in order to win.

Is there Democratic candidate somewhere that's running against another, anti-transDemocrat?

Running unopposed? Nah, bug doubt on that.

If you read a couple more lines about Josh Turek:

Read as federal policy, this is a Hyde Amendment for transgender people—no Medicaid, Medicare, or ACA subsidies. It would be horrific. The policy is more extreme than even some Republican policies in red states.

So, how is he better than his Republican opponent exactly? They both want to kill trans people, but only Josh Turek will show Democratic consultants that anti-trans policies win elections if he wins.

    1. Ashley Hinson is literally running ads attacking the DNC for supporting transgenders, including Turek. So if anything can be true it's that she thinks depriving them of healthcare isn't enough.

    2. DNC platform is bodily autonomy, to overturn citizens united, release the epstein files, and tax the rich, accomplishing that is better not only for transgender but everyone.

  • I am not sure how to better phrase this to come off as not attacking you, but before I respond to the comment's contents I need to make this clear. "Supporting transgenders" is a shitty phrasing that is used to dehumanize transgender people. Transgender is not a noun, I am not "a transgender", I am a transgender person or a transgender woman (also common shit, transwoman instead of trans woman). Again, I am not trying to accuse you of being transphobic, I just want to educate anyone reading this as I see this all too often on the internet!

    1. Republicans are transphobic, that's just a fact. They'll also accuse even the most transphobic Democrat of being too pro trans people. Turek is actively campaigning on harsher anti-trans policies than those that exist in Republican lead states. They are both awful, but only one of them is in direct opposition to their own party's platform.

    2. You're so close to getting where I am coming from with this one. If DNC leadership sees that running on a platform of bigotry wins elections, they'll double down on it hard. We'll be their "acceptable sacrifice". Bodily autonomy is the stated policy today, but what about in 2028? 2030? 2032? Will that still be the policy in a few years if people like Turek win? I don't want the party to normalize transphobic policies as an acceptable stance for candidates to hold.

"There’s a saying in Germany. If there’s a Nazi at the table and ten other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with eleven Nazis." I'd rather not to have people like this sit down at the Democrat's table.

Look at what happened in the UK with Labour. They swung super far right on trans rights immediately upon winning. Trans people are worse off now than they were under the conservatives.

This year. Have you read the policy positions in the linked article? A democrat is literally campaigning on getting rid of our healthcare. Several have broken with the party to vote against out healthcare this last session. The republicans are struggling to get all of their anti trans agenda through because of opposition.

Transohobic democrats like the ones listed in the article, and the one on my ballot are threatening to undermine that opposition. If these traitors get into office, and turn the party against us, there will be no opposition. Transphobia will be bipartisan. There will be no one to stop the republicans building the camps. That is the worst possible outcome. Far worse than a handful of seats.

Transphobic democrats need to be stopped regardless of the cost.

Moving to a different state costs a lot of money, and that is something that people on public health plans like Medicaid lack. So, taking away a trans persons access to gender affirming care under these plans is literally erasing and killing us.

I did not vote Republican because that wasn't a choice that I had to make from where I am.

I am just trying to explain that there is a lot more to losing healthcare for us and it is fucking tone deaf to act like losing access to healthcare is no big deal and we should suck it up and keep voting for shitheads just because they have a fucking letter D next to their names.

Voting R is a protest vote in this case and every American is allowed to vote their mind and has reasons for doing so. This thread is full of people acting like they are admonishing us for making choices at the ballot box that line up with how we feel about those choices. And honestly the whole thing fucking sucks.

I can't think of a good phrasing for the question (this is like version 6 or so as I type), so apologies for that. I don't envy your position at all, but I was just curious as I was trying to think through scenarios. I'm lucky that my democratic candidate (the most progressive one in the primary that thankfully won it) considers (correctly in my opinion) that trans rights are human rights. I don't think they'll win (heavily-gerrymandered rural district), but I hope that they do.

Do you worry that, were you to vote republican, it would make other groups in the future less likely to support a candidate in favor of trans rights over one that more directly helps them? Put another way, if your vote causes peoples' rights to backslide, will they help or forgive you for what they might perceive as holding everyone hostage? I would worry that people, especially those whom are not traditionally as marginalized and not having strong opinions on trans rights to begin with, might be less supportive as a whole in that environment.

Again, I don't envy you, and feel free not to answer; I'm just trying to understand thoughts and strategies.

My voting choices are based on the specifics of the candidates on my ballot. In an effort to not dox myself I will not be naming names, but I will explain the concerns as best I can. The overwhelming majority of democrats are better than republicans on trans rights. There are exceptions, and one of them is on my ballot, so the safest course of action is to make them lose, and a vote for the opposition is the only effective way under first past the post.

Only in one race, only in this year, hopefully never again.

I am worried about things getting worse because things are already getting worse. Democrats are testing the waters of hatred. Candidates in the article are proposing more extreme and harmful legislation than the worst republicans, while others have started breaking with the party to vote against us. These things are real and already happening. My vote didn't cause this. To blame myself would be to think I have much power over the situation at all.

The US system of government is disfunctional by design. There are many ways for minority parties to block or stop legislation from getting through. The federal legislature is rarely able to pass legislation without bipartisan support. As long as one of the parties supports us, that disfunction and gridlock is to our advantage. Hateful transphobic legislation is hard to pass.

But these hateful transphobic democrats are an existential treat to that balance. The past few years have been bad for us. Despite being the minority, the legislative harm from the federal government has been limited because of democratic opposition. If these transphobic democrats see success, and they cause the party to abandon us, there will be nothing to limit the harm. Transphobia will become bipartisan. Legislation will go through unopposed. That is the worst possible scenario.

The candidate on my ballot is one of those who has been starting to break with the party to vote against us. In the past session they voted to ban trans women from sports, and to deny healthcare to trans people. This incumbent has a proven voting record of undermining the very resistance that has preserved what little safety I had these past two years. The only reasonable action is to try and get them out of office. The republican is also a threat, but a much lesser one in context.

  • Did you read the article? Normally, I'd agree that the Democrats are the lesser evil, but these candidates are all as bad or worse than Republicans for trans people based on their own voting record and stated plans/policies.

The Iowa senate race has a Democrat who wants to remove all federal healthcare funding for trans people. From the article "The policy is more extreme than even some Republican policies in red states". Do you know how many trans people are only able to afford HRT because of Medicaid and the ACA? Do you know how many hospitals and clinics will start refusing to see trans people if that happens?

If these bigots win, it signals to party leadership and their "consultants" who dictate their policy that running on an anti-trans platform wins, and so then we'll have 2 parties whose official platforms are explicitly anti-trans.

I am lucky enough to not be in any of the places where these assholes are running, but if I were, I don't know if I'd be able to vote for a candidate who actively wants to harm me. I would still go vote for every other Democrat running, but I don't think I'd be able to vote for the blue Republican over the red Republican. Who would you vote to be thrown into a cage with, the hungry lion or the hungry tiger?

I don't think that's a great example. They have always been that way on immigration as far back as I can remember. Monstrous boarder policy has been the bipartisan consensus as long as I have been alive and probably longer.

The 2016 election was most demonstrative of this, being a race between "build that wall," and "comprehensive boarder security with physical barriers if nescecary" which isn't a difference in policy, but enthusiasm.

Immigration is great and we should try and negotiate a Schengen area style agreement with our neighbors. I have no representation.

Would it be worth it if Democrats could shoot for a 60/40 senate (ambitious to the point of unrealism, I know) to pass wealth taxes, anti-corruption bills and environmental sanity, even if pro-trans bills might get 54/46 instead because of the antitrans copout senators?

Like imagine the inverse scenario. Hypothetically if the most pro-trans advocate person you know was running as a Republican, they would probably vote with Democrats on pro-trans bills, but they would also vote with Republicans to fuck over the working poor for wealthy interests' sake, they could be anti-immigration as well, take away healthcare equally from everyone not rich or chained to certain employer plans, and would happily give Republicans the majority necessary to enact that, among many other Republican priorities.

Leave that part of the ballot blank if you want to, but it should be considered if you are a single-issue voter for anything, which could be also be said for climate justice, pro-immigration, anti-racism, pro Indigenous rights, Palestine supporting, etc. Advocacy is good, all the time, including now before the election, but what people should be looking for in a leader is someone that will have a genuine ear out for your cause, not someone that agrees with you completely in every major issue. Go and vote.

Erin already said there are degrees most of the list were either voting amd advocating for sports bans and only some is voting with nasty Republican amendments to omnibus bills like defense spending. I think trans people should participate in sports, but calling for some exclusions in a select few competitions doesn't amount to them supporting the annihilation of a people in my view.

Also political consulting is a voodoo science so conclusions drawn aren't going to be what you think they are simply by not voting (even on a particular line item). There were many protests over Palestine in 2024 for example but consultants told the DNC it was everything else under the sun other the problem of Israeli bootlicking, because those consultants are paid to tell the DNC things that earn them commissions more than truthful or accurate insights.

If you want to get the message across, write to them on how they could better earn your vote by supporting the rights of trans people as normal human beings, before and after no matter the result.
