I was told by my hair stylist who is also a vfx makeup artist that I should colour match on my neck because that's where your foundation is going to cut off, and it's a lot easier to blend it seamlessly if it's already as close in colour as possible to your cutoff point. It took 3 tries to get the right shade for me, and the second time was someone at sephora matching it for me, and she went way too warm for my skin. I use soft glam foundation from elf in shade 11 in a range of 10 to 65

Colour matching is very complicated. It can be dramatically affected by the lighting. This is known as metamerism and it’s the bane of graphic designers and print makers everywhere.
