Front right you fucking small time chump.

Tbf I only say this because my shitty apartment stove only has one large burner and it's the front right.

Our stove functionally has 2 ( front right and back left ) but back left is inconvenient if we ain't just putting something on to sit on its own. So we basically only have one in my eyes. So much more work to use it thanks to the oven controlls that I'll often switch to using front left despite it being too small for the pot/pan.

My front left is a simmer burner, while my front right is a quickboil. Of those, right quickboil wins for sure.

However, my long middle burner is for a cast iron griddle, so I can make grilled cheese and pancakes without a pan. That burner wins, hands down.

Edit: looks almost just like this one, but mine isnt a GE, and my griddle has a liquid collection area on one side.

My partner is neurospicy and uses the front left.

I didn't really care about which burner until I saw their range, and they're quite oddly shaped.

Front right is just massive, back right is tiny, front left is normal and then back left is some weird in-between the normal and giant front right fob.

I have absolutely no idea who designed that stove, maybe it was data mined or something

But needless to say, the front left it was

Electrical is both inferior and superior to gas, depending on the application. To each their own according to preference, but for me it's induction -> gas -> halogen -> resistive coils

Why cook at all if you're going to willingly give up the pleasure of using fire the way our ancestors did since before they were even human? You might as well just suck nutritive slurry from a nozzle.

I am using fire. The fire of a raging ball of plasma millions of miles wide, so hot that it evaporates surface water here on Earth, sending rains falling inland that coalesce into a mighty river flowing through massive turbines to turn the generators that power my stovetop.

My parents, grandparents, and maybe my great grandparents used gas. All my other ancestors used wood. I cook with the power of science on my induction range because I'd rather not drown in carcinogens in my own home for the sake of boiling a pot of water and I'm not a fucking troglodyte.

Nope, not me. The knob for my front left burner (Electric stovetop) inexplicably has to be pressed in after being brought back to zero to actually turn off. It doesn't have to be pressed in to turn on, and none of the knobs for the other burners have to be pressed for anything, just the front left one to turn it off. Literally everyone in the house has burned themselves because of this hidden discrepancy at least once. We do not use the front left burner.

Break the gad one so it looks like it failed on its own. Then convince the landlord that longterm the induction is better and he should install that. You can get them for quite cheap nowadays.

He's got standard models he buys to replace everything so that all of his apartments have the same appliances. I've tried to get him to upgrade when he's replaced dishwashers and washing machines, no dice. He's usually got an appliance on deck ready to go to replace the next one that dies in one of his units. Which honestly is more prepared than any other landlord I've met so hard to complain, but even harder to get him to upgrade.

I've got a home purchase in my near future, that's the real solution to this problem.

But induction also leaves you no choice on burner supremacy. Why do they all have weird non-grid burner arrangements and only one large burner?

My front-right is supreme because it’s the only large one. Even if I secretly joined the front-left ascendancy

And that tiny summer burner behind it is unusable because the tiny pot would disappear behind the larger one

  • source

  • [–] 1 point 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Mostly because induction stove tops, except at the most expensive price point, don't have knobs, only touch panels. Also, they usually turn themselves off if they don't detect something they can induce a current in. But really though, despite the lack of knobs, I love my induction range and would never willingly go back to conventional or gas for my kitchen.

The front right is tiny and weak. My soup merely laughs at the thought, however front left is sacred and all consuming. Shall I simply warm or buuuuuuuuuuuurn.

Front left is for the frying pans (stir fries and saucy stuff).

Front right is for the small pots (rice, noodles).

Back right is for the large pots (stews, soups).

And back left is to put down the lids while cooking.

I just bought a new range, and I will admit that I actually created a digital model of the candidates and evaluated which range layout was superior via Monte Carlo simulation of pot placement and BTU based heating times.

There was a Bosh I really wanted, but the centre burner was the strongest element and that layout was overall less effective when combined with a 12” cast iron, meaning one of the two had to be on a lower power burner. If I want to make pork chops in my skillet, a delicious fettuccini in a pot, a cream based sauce in my saucier pan, and cook up some French beans in a fry pan, the Bosh would have taken like 30% longer to prepare due to the boiling time of the water (I no longer remember the exact times).

Bosh please rethink your 30” gas range centre burner layout. It is most efficient for soup making or meat searing, but soup making is very rarely constrained by heating time (low and slow wins) and searing meat is usually accompanied by sides, so the smaller edge burners are less effective.

I thought I hated the stove at my new place because it’s a glass top, but I found out it has inductive coils and the front left burner has a small and wide setting. My front left burner beats ass.

Mine has 4 large induction ‘burners’ that automatically adapt to the size of the pan. It also has physical knobs on the front of the cabinet so no touch-screen controls that suck and take up space, leaving more space for the burners. It’s frikkin awesome. I can fit 4 large pots on there no problem.

I used to have a 5 burner gas stove but you could only realistically fit 3 pots on there and that was if there was at least a small one so this is a huge upgrade.

It's always just which ever is the biggest. They need to have two big ones the same size.

Science needs to resolve this question for both gas and electric. Is bigger always better? Or is it like how things thaw slower in hot water?

EDIT: my oven is electric guys, so I think I can go small pot, on BIG burner. But is that better? Probably.

depends on target temperature, and how much gradient from internal to external temperature is acceptable. high heat will cook the outside much faster than the inside, which is fine for something like rare steak with a seared outside and relatively low core temp, but cooking chicken the same way will have the outside completely dry and charred by the time the core gets where it needs to be. lower heat gives more time for heat to spread all the way through, so the difference between core temp and surface temp is less

Front right wil place the pan handle near the left burner if you’re righty. On the other hand, if it’s a free standing range with no countertop, the pan handle becomes a danger if using the left burner.

Personally, I prefer the back burners, starting from the left, so the vapors/smoke are better contained by the range hood.

Huh? My pan handle on the right burner gets put at 4-5 o'clock. Cast iron pan is heavy, I need to use my right hand to maneuver it.

I find it curious this is the case. I always assumed i like left front burner because i’m left handed. but why wouldn’t right handed people prefer the right hand burner? do you leave the handle crossing through the whole thing?

Hold the pan with the left hand (handle on the left) and do the precise work (moving and flipping stuff) with the right hand. Why would a left handed person prefer the left burner?

I've lived in enough places, with enough different kitchens and stoves, that it really depends on the layout. Some stoves have bigger burners on the right or the left (whether electric or gas). Some have the stove too close on one side to an inconvenient wall or the outlet you have a countertop appliance plugged into, and that determines preference.

I prefer the center, on my current setup. It's tied for the biggest burner with front right, but the center gets the best ventilation, I like for the handles not to hang over the edge, and I use either hand to hold the handle (flip with my right, or stir with my right while holding with my left). Two handled pots benefit from the symmetry, too.

But that's my current setup. I've had preferences for different sides with different stoves.

my front left burner is the small one, which i need less. in reality, everyone just prefers the largest front burner on whatever range they currently have. that's it. that's all it is.

My stove is just a platform for my 2 burner induction hotplate. Way more efficient and faster than the radiative heat burners on the stove, though I'll use then occasionally for large pots or stone bowls.

My cat likes to chill right of the stove. Damn right I prefer left mow; it only takes a little burnt tail to get you to stop using the right altogether. (He's ok btw, cat fur is weirdly fire retardant.)
