The article is a little vague on the AI use in this project, and does not seem to tell the whole story. Here is the disclosure of the usage from the git project page:

"AI coding tools were used in developing and debugging this port. My focus has been on matching the original P.T.: comparing builds with PS4 references, identifying discrepancies, testing gameplay and prioritizing fixes.

The project uses the original game assets from the player's own PS4 copy. Optional upscalers and neural rendering use machine-learning models when enabled."

Still pretty vague.

This isn't a commercial product, so I'm not sure why the AI use matters. It's not replacing a paid dev position.

There is more than one reason to avoid AI developed software. We have no idea if they used a local model, or are paying one of the shit companies pushing AI into everything. We don't know the skill level of the dev and if they have the ability to quality check the AI code. We don't know if there are potential security vulnerabilities because of AI code (hopefully less likely in this kind of project). That is all in addition to the greater issues with AI.

I am also just fucking sick of seeing people make headlines for typing in to a chat box and having the stupid fucking robot port a game they didn't even make with barely any effort. Fuck these lazy assholes, I'd genuinely rather the game not be ported at all.

  • It's an indicator of general laziness and of poor quality.

I would hope it hasn't affected anything, but now I'm forced to wonder if this PT is really the same PT that I remember.

Also, commercial projects are not wholly separated from the culture of hobbyists. They inform each other and reflect each other. If hobbyists largely use AI, then yes, commercial projects will too.

Long lost? People have been holding onto that fucking demo since it came out and it's only been... Holy fucking shit twelve years?

I had a VR compatible remake of PT like a decade ago. Anything special about this version in particular?

The reliance on real P.T. files makes this port more authentic than previous hobbyist efforts to re-create the look and feel of P.T. for a PC audience. And while PS4 emulators recently reached a point where they could run P.T. completely, this native port also sports extra features, like upscaling and frame-generation, a camera mode, experimental third-person and VR support, and a “museum” section where you can look at and listen to in-game assets (including “unused content”).

Needed? Wasn't this just a demo?

For the record, this isn't the first port, but I tried two others a couple years back and they were rough. Let me know when this one is a good experience with it

Why does it feel so "wrong" to play AI decompilated ports? I guess because people doesn't actually do anything but ask an LLM to do everything and they just release it like they did something amazing?

I don't care when using AI with the Linux kernel because we know that Linus has been developing the kernel for years, so we can guess we know what he is doing, but honestly I prefer to play an emulated version of PT using ShadPS4 than using this decompilated version

Edit: According to the article the developer didn't use AI to decompile PT and port it to PC, but actually port it with new features, I guess in this case is "fair use" if he know what he's doing, but you get my point, with games like Bloodborne or GOW.

Now this is actually a good use of AI. The world would still be better without it, but at least this is saving something that could have disappeared forever.

I imagine others are wondering, too:

Xavier said that he has “spent years studying P.T. and Fox Engine” in developing the port and only uses AI tools “for debugging, troubleshooting and investigating problems.”
