Scientists typically declare an El Niño when sea surface temperatures in a key area of the Pacific are 0.5C or more above the long-term average.

Current measurements show that they are well over 2C above normal.

Latest forecasts from the Met Office suggest that this warming could exceed 3C later this year as El Niño nears its peak.

This is fucked. We’re so fucked. I don’t see how we undo the damage to our environment without millions or billions of deaths and displacements.

I really wanted to look into the claim made in the article:

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) says there is "no evidence" that climate change increases the frequency or strength of El Niño events.

However, this is an ongoing area of research and debate for scientists.

As far as I can tell, there is some nuance going on here that will be easily misleading.

    1. What they are saying is that climate change doesn't make for worse El Niño events, nor more frequent - the ENSO mechanism that causes them happens regardless and itself has not changed due to climate change

    2. What they're not saying here but other places do note: The baseline hotter climate of climate change DOES mean that they are worse because the background temp is already hotter, also it's believed that the hotter climate causes a "tipping point" into an El Niño more frequently

So alas, either way you state that, there is room for someone to pipe up and be all "nuh-uh!".

Definitely one of the things where sound bites makes it worse.

At what point will these scientists upgrade El Niño to El Hombre?

I've kissed mermaids, rode the El Niño

More specifically the fishermen noticed the waters warmed up around Christmas, and El Niño refers to baby Jesus, because the event happened every few years around Christmas time so it was a way of saying “that weird Christmas time warm water weather events us fishermen noticed first”

and still we can't even by forked voting Green because some purity test means they're not perfect... so we'll select the incumbent stupidity (who are Schrödingers politicians because they're both incompetent and the only choice at the same time apparently) and we'll do the same thing, while complaining nothing changes, includibg us

Jill Stein famously had a private meeting with Putin during the last election cycle. The green party has taken Russian money. Large parts of the democratic party don't, but you fucking lemmings actually believe the Dems are worse than the Republicans for some dumb fucking reason so facts and logic are already out the fuckin door for y'all. Fuckin fascists.

Sad to see that you fall for the billionaires bullshit. It’s not class, age race or religion. It is the billionaires against everyone who is not a billionaire.

Billionaires would not exist if not for generations of cunts enabling them through propaganda and voting&consumming against their own interest. Boomers and the generations before them are guilty, not only of that, and not only now. At the moment, it seems that the entire planet has to die with them, when as a species we've never been richer. We already have the means to start mending what we've fucked up. And we don't, all that to the advantage of a minority of psychopaths. So, yeah, the truth of it all has more to do with capitalism, imperialism, the way we conceptualize power and authority, etc, but all those things, they have to be enabled.

So, yeah. Maybe not "luigi all boomers", but they could at least fuck themselves hard enough to gape for eternity.

    I hope so.

It would be nice to have a warmer than normal winter this year.

our is too, since it a mediterrenean climate in the west coast of us, but i noticed the winters are colder, and it gets cold sooner in the year. also it matches with the flowering of jade plants(succulents) they seem to start flowering soon, they usually dont flower til around december, and now they do it in october.

Out here in southern Canada it is next to impossible to determine when to plant anything anymore.

This year we had 40° in february a few days. With -40° for a fee days. And -20° til around april.

The year before it was 30° from February onwards and we hit 45° more than once.

I love cilantro (coriander) which is extremely sensitive to heat and will bolt the moment it hits 35°. I used to grow 2 crops each year. Spring and fall. Can't do that anymore. Not outdoors, anyway.

A decade ago i noticed the seasons were shifting sooner.

    Now they are chaotic.

Chaos, Gaia and Eris are having a ball.

Good timing. Billions of people will be affected. thousands or maybe More might die. Maybe this will be enough to push the change we need
