I've heard the excuse that the whole daylight savings shenanigans are to help farmers, but that's always sounded silly.

    The theory I've heard floated most often was that it was intended to make sure that workers in British munitions factories during the World Wars could see well enough to find their way to the pub at the end of their shift. Nothing to do with farmers at all. It isn't like cows or crops care about numbers on a clock.
