I've read all the comments on this thread so far. There were a lot of good answers, and I think this is the one that made me feel the most optimistic about the future. Congrats!

Humans as a species surviving or not isn't really what bothers me. It's the billions of humans, and animals who will suffer and die in the meantime that bother me. I get what you're saying, but it comes off as "a million or even a billion people may survive so ignore the rest" to me who's a cynic. Sorry.

quartz optical discs with femtosecond lasers are good for 360TB for 100K years

I got excited about the possibility of backing up shit once, and forever. Then I tried to buy this. Maybe this thread has made me too optimistic lol.

I finished an old bottle of Dr. Teal's ($11.50/l) foaming bath soap and am looking for recommendations of Canadian/other non-US alternatives.

Rocky mountain soap has one at $49/l which is insane when you compare it with the other product lol. Anyone got a good alternative?

Edit - I'm basically looking for a good foamy soap to turn my bathtub into this occasionally --

Oh yeah, the merging thing confused me in Alberta. People who were already on the highway would move over to the middle/left lanes when they saw someone trying to merge. Like whaaat? Are they stupid or something? Didn't anyone teach them that the correct thing to do is to speed up in an attempt to stop new cars from entering the highway? It's like they hate their home life and are not even trying to get home 0.2 seconds faster.

I just spent ~10 days in Calgary and Edmonton for work. It was my first time there and I expected oil patch bros to drive worse than the 401 bros. How wrong I was.

Almost everybody drove the speed limit. "Maximum 90" meant MAXIMUM 90, not MINIMUM 90. The highway lanes were much wider and they had far less traffic, and people were still capable of going the speed limit without spontaneously combusting. The speed limits were lower than comparable roads in ON would have.

People would speed up to pass in the passing lane and then move back over. Nobody tried to play road rash either.

On the way back home from Pearson, I see two absolute dumbasses switch into the same lane from left & right and then refuse to move away for 10-15 seconds. And there was a semi that went from the right most lane to the left most in one go. And multiple cars that switched lanes across solid lines. And a TTC work truck thing that had crashed into the back of an SUV on Lawrence.

I'm so grateful that I don't have to drive in Toronto and can rely on the TTC for the most part. The odd occasion when I have to drive here makes me lose what little faith I have in people.

Was at the CN Tower with some friends who were visiting Toronto today, and I expected to get a great view of the air show from high above.

Boy, was I wrong. The planes flew at a much much lower altitude than the observation deck for the most part. The fact that they were farther away than I had assumed didn't help either.

There were a few cool flybys later in the day that I got to watch after I had descended and enjoyed watching them from the ground.

    What's your air show story?

Sharing a positive interaction I had in the city a few weeks back, inspired by the person questioning if this community is only for news lol.

A few weeks back, I was standing on a street corner collecting signatures for a petition. It was a extremely hot day (32°+, humid), and most people were in a hurry to get away from the sun.

One of the people I bothered with my spiel said that he's in a hurry and left before I could finish the second sentence. He came back half an hour later (after he had run his errands) with a box of haagen dazs ice creams and handed one to each of us from the group - simply because he felt bad for us being out in the heat.

He chatted with us for a bit while we ate the ice creams, but still didn't sign the petition though lol.

    Thanks ice cream man. :)
