I’ve had to be the lead technical advisor on a process refinement activity at work. We have some other consultants helping guide the conversation with our vendor who has a lot of problems in their process that our clients are unhappy with.

Needless to say, i’m your guy for a process discussion but maybe not the best at dealing with a bunch of neurotypical social dressing amongst a bunch of folks that I don’t work closely with.

Working sessions were LONG and informationally dense and, while I was able to get great results on our process work, it became pretty evident that folks were increasingly treating me according to the social standing that I enjoy as an autistic person. Of course, I understand this well and wasn’t overly bothered.

Usually I just let these things slide because its usually pretty trivial and not worth the trouble, and ive never been great at punishing poor treatment in a way that leaves me clean in the exchange.

Well we got to the end if the exercise and I was surprised to find that ‘someone’ would now need to make a 20-slide presentation to the bosses and the whole group about everything we did and that it was already scheduled. That someone was obviously meant to be me in this situation and so I let them know if I were to do it that I would need more time to prepare than was being given. (I need to write a script, run through it, revise it for it to be consumable by NTs. Especially when there is a lot of people attending.) What followed was all manner of badgering and belittling attempts to pressure me into doing it as and when prescribed. But I just stuck with my stance until a colleague less versed in the issues volunteered out of what I assume to be feeling uncomfortable by me not caving to the pressure.

I thanked him privately and explained that it was just an autism thing and I needed more runway for prep. They could have let me know any time along this workshop that I would need to also do this and I could have done the work to be ready as needed.

In any case, we were given the opportunity to give feedback for the experience to the consultants: what went well, what was tricky, what could be improved and of course they asked me last.

I gave them positive sounding feedback in all areas, i mean, largely we accomplished what we set out to do.. but I did have notes for improvement that as a person with accessibility requirements and specific needs, not having any expectations communicated about what ‘next steps’ might entail as we worked through the exercises throughout did not let me properly prepare for the work that might be needed.

They immediately did a 180 in attitude. I also got a very prompt follow up call where they were oh-so-pleasant and they apologized (and made excuses ofc)

Even so, I could tell they felt like jackasses and I never lost my cool one bit as I explained I just needed a heads up and prep time, but that they would have to present themselves if they wanted to stay on that schedule. Of course they can tag me in for context and commentary.

Bonus is I outted myself as disabled to a ton of folks who had no idea.. and it feels good.

I replied to a post earlier today and said I would post some resources on a few topics. I thought it might be helpful to others so I decided I would make a few posts and just direct the individual to the posts.

I think it's important for people to realize that autistic burnout is very different from other types of burnout and needs different treatment. I'm currently dealing with some serious bullshit because my workplace thinks I have occupational burnout despite medical documentation otherwise and has decided I don't need any accomodations. 🫠 (I live in a place with very strong protections and have access to a lot of support so I know I will win this battle but it still fucking sucks)!

I'm not up to date on who is problematic so if you want to let me know one of these sources sucks, please go ahead and comment so others know, I promise I won't take it personally.

Please also add any other resources you might want to share!

Recovering from autistic burnout can take time — sometimes even years, depending on how severe it is. Your goal isn’t to “get back to normal.” It’s to adjust your lifestyle to help prevent it from happening again.

Eta: this is an embarrassingly short post but I'm exhausted lol

Im posting this here to see if anyone has any solutions or help. I am diagnosed with autism, and I often get embarrassing special interests or hyperfixations.. usually it would be like Miraculous, kids' shows that can also be seen by teens and adults but as of 3 years ago I've gotten really into Go Diego Go.. its the only show I'll watch, and I'll only draw and think about Go Diego Go. But every time I talk to anyone about i fear they're giving the dirty look behind the screen or thinking Im a weirdo in their minds if its in real life. I hate being autistic.

My problem is I get so obsessed that it hurts if I don't talk about it to people, like my brain gets so full that I can't function if I don't share it and I only have one last friend who won't judge me but they're always busy and I can tell they don't really want to hear about it. At the same time if I've yapped about something too much (like my infection au for GDG) it gets TIRING to yap about it further as if I've beat the dead horse into non-existence. It's awful.

Reading the web and watching the YouTube's yields a plethora of little attention hacks that apparently really help people with their ADHD, but leave me feeling completely alienated because absolutely none of them work for me. In fact, I just don't even implement them, just sort of eye them suspisciously from a distance.

It feels a little reminscent of the advice I'd get for depression in that the bulk of advice seems targetted towards people with less severe forms, and both writers and readers can say, "Wow! Thanks! This really worked for me!"

The feeling that I had earlier that, "OK, now I have a diagnosis, I can start treating the problem" is evaporating away I'm left with a despair that comes from having a version of ADHD that is seemingly not treatable and not work-aroundable and is actually and irrevocably debilitating.

Getting an eval in a week

Edit: If anyone has resources for severe ADHD instead of this Stephen Covery organizational bullshit, please drop it in the comments.

Howdy Again Everyone,

Trying to gauge interest in projects, see my previous post on my profile to see some quick ideas.

The chat is pretty barren at the moment. If you're on the fence about joining, what would you like to learn in the group? What kind of involvement would you want to have?

My wife and I are not good with holding back presents. Or keeping secrets about presents. So here's my Christmas Present early. I think they are so pretty!

Hello All,

I finally got around to creating the chat and my Matrix account. If you’re interested in joining the hardware group, I plan on having us design something interesting involving a PCB and a use case.

Some projects included:

  1. Process control for soap making
  2. Bread Making
  3. Spectrometer design
  4. Gaming console design
  5. Engine control unit

Those are just some ideas off the top of my head. Fabricating silicon from Tiny Tapeout can cost upwards of $300 per chip.

Supposing we have a usecase that would make that worth it, we would not have many chances to place that chip onto our designed PCB.

The goal is to have all schematics, firmware, and software open sourced.

Comments are for questions and discussion. DM me for an invite to the server. I look forward to meeting all of you.
