our current situation...

In 09

Ok. Between 2009 and now he had 2 terms of his own ahead, a candidate Trump emerging, a candidate Trump winning in an upset, a pandemic, a few years of his VP giving a few years of relative respite, and now Trump Season 2 with a whole new set of awful people in the cabinet. It's been 17 years since then. Sure, that could have changed course but can you really see exactly what's going to happen between now and 2043?

Or, if you really want to play the unintended consequences game, how about this? Bill Clinton handles the Elian González situation differently, Gore wins Florida and with that the 2000 election, and George W Bush isn't in office on 9/11 (if it even happens, considering POTUS was warned that Al Qaeda was planning on using highjacked planes as missiles). Can you even imagine what the world would have been like if Elian's mother made it on that boat?

I'm not really as liberal as most Lemmings (by no means conservative though) so take this as you will.

I was a cub scout. Was mostly indifferent to it but when my best friend at the time and cousin left, I didn't see much reason to stay.

I think your reasons for support are valid. Some people had bad experiences. That's unfortunate, but I'm not sure it should mean the whole organization needs to collapse. The Catholic Church (I'm a recovering Catholic, by the way 🙂) is a little different in that its hierarchy can send career staff to other locations to sweep things under the rug, whereas scouts tend to interact with other parent volunteers who are only there as long as their kids are.

Not strictly about emetophobia, but it seems to be fairly commonly correlated. If you can't burp, look up Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction, or R-CPD. Basically, a part of the esophagus doesn't open to release gas for burping (and sometimes for vomiting) which has a handful of different side effects that appear to be GI-related, but aren't.

Treatment is pretty simple: basically, a shot of Botox is injected in that part of the esophagus by an ENT, which relaxes the muscle and allows burping. Most providers do so under general anesthesia, but some do it in-office.

Obviously emetophobia can have many causes and this won't necessarily solve it - if it's even an issue. I personally don't consider myself emetophobic, but have seen comments on the old site (/r/noburp) that some people have had emetophobia get a little better after treatment too.

Having had the treatment myself, I want to make sure people are aware of this. Happy to answer questions as best I can if needed!
