Yeah, the translation is better than trying to deal with a shopkeeper who doesn't want to yukkuri the fuck hanashite kudasai or whatever. I have a vocabulary of maybe 800 words but whatever you're speaking is way outside it.

If at the end of the time, I was able to walk free without consequence, I would take the challenge, and spend time observing the behaviour of the beast. How fast does it move? How deeply does it sleep? Does it go torpid? Does it overheat?

I feel like there may be a way to do it. If not, well, i had a month of vacation.

It's got challenges, but the parking lot isn't one of them. They have a sidewalk that goes down the middle to the entrance from the street, pretty much.

Tons of people using ebikes. I think they're largely food delivery services like doordash.

My current shopping list: Sundried tomatoes, whole spelt flour, kalamata olives (pitted, in brine), cottage cheese, 0% yogurt, and dried mango.

Partly nostalgia. Partly the political situation (as @VonReposti says). Partly the climate being more stable. By the year 3000 I'll probably be wanting to re-experience the world before ecological poverty.

Partly just thinking, that if I'm going to be stuck somewhere with enough to keep me entertained for a good long while, the real world is a pretty good place. Access to all the books, video games, movies, TV, and anime I could possibly want. :)

Assuming that the game can't actually kill you? Probably some mundane simulation of 1997 ish. Give me enough in-universe currency and fast travel.

    Lots to do.

So... we're playing an immersive mode game, and we're kinda halfway through Ashlands and contemplating what we'll need to bring to the Deep North.

Without any major spoilers, are there any Ashlands materials that we will need to bring with us up north? Without portals, the trip between the poles will be a serious pain in the butt, and if it turns out that we're going to need a billion grausten or a steady supply of ferns, that could be a problem to address ahead of time.

I was messing around with how Chapter 5 regions might map into the existing game, and came up with this.

    • Connects Milton to the coast
    • unites the two road networks, so you can drive all the way from Bleak Inlet to Suzuki (pre-quakes).
    • connects the railway from Mystery Lake to a coastal port for log export, and obviously all the way to TFTFT
    • Plausibly allows Jace to get stuck in Blackrock, with the mine shortcut to Suzuki, while maintaining her ability to normally drive there (by going through Milton. Hypothetically there could be a road going directly there from Keeper's Pass as well)
    • Desperation Bay is too linear, but it has those two iconic landmarks, so I think the SAR station could go halfway between the ship & the lighthouse.
    • Uses the railway to the SAR to connect to Port Mary.
    • Plausibly justifies Milton being "halfway between the mountains and Port Mary" - the drive to Suzuki could be "in the mountains"
    • Preserves coastal access to Perseverance Wilds

    Have I missed anything big?

On the ravine heading to the Mystery Lake transition cave, looking between a couple rocks, I see this, looking maybe north-northwest.

I'm betting that's the road to Keeper's Pass, after the prisoner transport bus tunnel cave-in.

Pretty neat, never noticed it before.

I've been wondering whether it's better for memory pages to be compressed at the hypervisor level, or on the VM level.

I'm leaning toward the VM level, because

1: VMs have better knowledge of memory pressure by the application, and can better decide when to swap pages out to zram. The VM has access to information about memory pages that the hypervisor doesn't have.

2: if pages are compressed on the hypervisor level, the VM doesn't "see" any increased memory available. The host box gains free memory, but the application never sees it to make use of it, it'll just see the same 8GB as it always has, so it never really benefits. This maybe lets you host more VMs on one box, but at the cost of the applications not being as efficient.

Is this a reasonable position? I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious.

It really lays bare some missing pieces. Like there's no road that goes to Mountain Town currently that connects into the wider network. And the future rail link after it terminates in Coastal Highway certainly has to go north to either Port Mary or Perseverance Mills.
