Remember when there was the threat of this happening to open source software and people thought it was the end of open source? This is dumb and the only good that could come out of it is that someone is forced to rule that there is no such thing as a clean room implementation.

I think it's our responsibility as parents who enjoy the outdoors to pass this type of stuff on and make sure it's a positive an experience as possible (sorry to hear about that incident on your second trip!). We need future generations to not only care about the environment in a vague sense but to have a personal connection to it.

I took my son for the first time when he was four. The next year, we went three times, in spring, summer, and fall. We didn't get an opportunity to go away the year after that but our property is nice and wooded so we camped in the backyard a couple of times. These last two years, he's been more involved with sports and other activities so we've taken a break from overnight or multi-night trips and just done hikes. Next year, I have two weekend trips planned for spring and summer. I'm planning on taking my now eight year old son on one and my four year old daughter on the other. If only I could get the missus interested and we could all go at once.

This has been obvious for a little while now but it just doesn't click for people or they simply do not care. It is precisely the idea behind a Chromebook. Everything in the cloud. By now, a couple of generations have grown up using them almost entirely and it has already been normalized for them.

Unfortunately, this particular image is a fake. Not sure why someone felt the need to fake it. So none else posted an actual photo in the comments and it is pretty easy to spot the differences.

I used a brand new email alias when I created an account at pine64.com to buy the PineTime. Before Saturday, I had only ever received an email at that address from Pine64, regarding that order. On Saturday, I received an email at that address trying to sell me a 1st Anniversary Commemorative set of Riftbound cards. I don’t even know what that is.

Do you think they leaked some customer data or are they selling it?

There has been a lot of swirl around various pieces of age verification legislation and how different platforms and operating system developers are responding. I believe strongly in privacy and that the responsibility for the online activities of children is that of the parents. That said, as a parent, I think we need better tools available, especially for those who are less technically inclined. Here are my ideas:

    • A standard needs to be established that is open source and cross platform.
    • It should run at the OS level.
    • It should be controlled by someone with administrator access to the device / OS (a parent in the case of devices used by children).
    • It should be completely optional for that administrator whether they want to turn it on or not.
    • The only input should be birth year of the child whose account is being set up. No other personally identifiable info should be included.
    • All relevant sites/apps/platforms such as social media and NSFW sites should be required to honor the age indicator.

It needs to be assumed that at some point, any kid who really wants to learn will find a way to circumvent any controls but parents do need better tools.
