and had plenty of time to move on

Sorry, do you mean developers or users, and where exactly do you think one can move to? IPhones? GrapheneOS is still restricted to Pixels and while the Motorolla collab is starting up they already announced that they start with flagship type phones, meaning expensive.

Its a shit process. If they'd just get rid of the 24h countdown it be bearable. But thats exactly the tactic, isn't it, make it as shitty as you can, then you dial it back just a notch so people feel like that is better, even though it is still worse than the original process.

Oh no worries. I wrote this post with no expectations whatsoever since I myself have no clue about this.

I'll make a note on checking power consumption, also when I am planning to buy the next drive, which won't be for a while though. Until then I will just make sure to do regular backups.

Yes, disk is powered via USb. I had however a different disk before that was separately powered and I think I also ran into this issue.

Where would I see under voltage warnings? I kind of doubt this is it because for months everything is fine, this sounds like it would cause issues more regularly.

I think you might onto something with the filesystem. I am using Hd-idle to switch off the HDD when not in use. It was of course in use the entire time during this, but I noticed in the logs that it came up multiple times as "assuming disk spun up after long sleep" even though it hadn't been off at all.

Only saw this after I made my post and I cannot make sense of it, but I have never seen this message otherwise, it only happened during this period of not being able to access the server.

I am not aware I have that installed/configured, not sure if this comes with a DietPi installation?

If we assume yes, how would I fix this?

Edit: looked around online, is there supposed to be a /etc/fail2ban directory? If so, I don't have it so I guess this is not installed.

The OS is on a SD card, the HDD is a spinning disc connected via USB and I actually never had any issues with its connectivity.

There are however issues sometimes if I connect a second drive, where I assume it does have something to do with not getting enough power for 2 external HDDs, but I only ever connect a second drive for backing up.

Don't think this is connected, but if more people here feel like yes then I am happy to check in that direction.

It is running headless and I have no monitor and/or keyboard I could connect.

From my post. But also it sits in a shelf where anyway don't have much space to put anything else. It also happens too rarely that it wouldn't make sense to get specifically for this a display and keyboard in place.

    cross-posted from: https://piefed.ca/c/selfhosted@lemmy.world/p/957754/local-homeserver-suddenly-not-responsive-to-ssh-but-can-be-pinged

Cross-posting this from Lemmy world where it seems my post coming from piefed.ca is not federating.

This is something that seems to happen randomly to my little RaspberryPi 4B homeserver, like once every few months maybe.

What happens is that out of nowhere (meaning I didn't make any change to config or installation) I cannot reach any services I host on it (i.e. Jellyfin, Anchor notes...). I cannot access it via SSH at all, connection keeps timing out.

Ping however gives a signal. I can see/hear its running and doing something, since I hear the external HDD working. It is running headless and I have no monitor and/or keyboard I could connect.

So far my only way out is to just switch its power off, which is obviously not good for the hard drive. It has happened now like half a dozen times over the past few years, so I am wondering what a better way is to handle this. This was on RPI OS and now its happening on DietPi, so seems not related to the OS version.

I tried sending a shutdown signal via SSH but that also just times out, so how do I get it to shutdown properly?

Secondly, what kind of logs could I look at or start collecting to make sense of this?

This might have been an issue in an earlier version, I haven't checked this for a long time.

If I go to my saved/bookmarked stuff, I can see saved posts just fine but going to the comments tab it show no content.

If I log in to another client or the website, it is all there though, so just an issue displaying that.

I am on piefed server, so maybe something to do with a Piefed update? Just a hunch.

I have started moving away from gmail and have started exporting my older e-mails via the takeout option. This generates .mbox files. I don't really use any e-mail clients on my computer and do most of my e-mailing on my phone, so I don't have a way of viewing/searching those files.

Therefore I was wondering if there is any selfhosted option for some kind of e-mail archive/viewer with decent search function that anyone can recommend? Specifically something capable of handling those .mbox files. I found a few projects that sounded promising, but they seemed either dead, weren't setup for selfhosting or could only connect directly to the mailboxes. So I thought I'd ask here if anyone has experience with this, maybe some recommendations?

Also open to alternative approaches what to do with those files. I just would like to delete these mails from gmail entirely, but that requires I can search them with as much ease as I can on gmail with a local option.

    Thanks!

In addition to the bug mentioned here with sorting posts in multicommunities https://lemmy.world/post/48917983

I just found another bug with multicommunities, I have one with just 2 or 3 communities making up the multicomunity, and if I browse it I see maybe 10-12 posts, then Summit tells me there is nothing more to show. If I however click on the individual communities I see they got much more content than that.

Will be travelling to Japan later this year and found out about these workshops in Tokyo where you get make "your own" modded Gameboy. Guessing modded refers to being able to choose custom shells and buttons, not so much to anything else there might be (I am not very knowledgeable about Gameboy mod scene).

Looks super cool, but is very pricey. Around 55.000 Yen for different courses, so I am a bit on the fence for booking it or not.

Anybody here have any experience with these? Would those be "normal" Gameboys you need cartridges for?

Edit: found a video of one, just in case someone is interested seeing how it goes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjHSz8goaZ8

I have been using the app filters option to remove some posts I don't care about that are recurring, which is a nice feature.

There are however two problems with it that are sort of related, I don't seem to get it to work filtering combinations of words? E.g. I can filter for "hello" and "world" but when I make a filter for "hello world" it doesn't block anything. Is there a certain way you need to define those or does it just not work?

And since I can only do single word filters I have now the issue that I filter posts I do not mind actually. E.g. by trying to filter "hello world" with just "hello" I am also filtering "hello you". But whenever a post got filtered it does not tell you which filter was applied, it just says "this post is filtered because of a custom filter", or something like that.

Could that message maybe write out the word it filtered so one can see which filter got applied? Since I had wrong posts filtered I am now often checking, which post is behind the filter, but thats kind of removing the purpose of the filter.

    From the Emudeck discord:

@everyone Hey everyone, apologies for the ping but since this is deemed as critical to the security of people's devices here, I will have to. Cemu (The Wii U emulator) was recently compromised by a malicious attacker using a known developers account, this compromise took place from May 6th to May 12th, and introduces malware that is known to steal passwords, SSH keys, GitHub tokens, and likely more they are not fully aware of at this moment. We recommend anybody who is on Linux or SteamOS to go into the EmuDeck app, Manage Emulators tab, Cemu, and click Reinstall/Update, and make sure the hash of the AppImage (Located in Home/Applications, right click Cemu AppImage, go into Properties, Checksums, and Calculate the SHA256 hash) matches the non-compromised version provided by the Cemu developers, if you have used Cemu from the dates I have mentioned, and the SHA256 hash does not match what is listed, assume your system may be compromised if it was ran. If you are on Windows, MacOS, or used the Flatpak version, you are not affected by this malware. More information regarding this attack can be found here. https://rentry.org/cemu-security-psa

    The specifically affected packages were:

    Cemu-2.6-x86_64.AppImage

    cemu-2.6-ubuntu-22.04-x64.zip
