This kind of sob stories about gang memebers are so counterproductive. Are we supposed to feel sorry that someone who at least willingly associated with extreme violence (if not committed it themselves) is locked up?

That being said El Salvador needs a reconciliation plan. These people will not stay locked up forever, and it's important to return them to society without falling in the old ways. Which is made more difficult by all the violence they were exposed to inside prison.

I've long held that El Salvadorean prisoners are best understood as PoWs in a civil war, rather than regular criminals. That why "reconciliation" is a much better approach than a legalistic one. Doesn't seem like anyone cares though.

Taking advantage of the lax rules to ask a very broad question, maybe too broad. Feel free to answer with your area of expertise, whether geographically or temporally.

Basically before the European conquest various states, groups, cities, federations, whatever existed in North America.

Unlike Aztecs and Maya which are very present in the popular culture, very little is talked about their northern neighbors. I would like to get a better view of what the political system on the continent looked like at the time.

The date is rough - anything goes that we have the data on.

The company I work for has been bough out by private equity and then dismantled to be sold in parts. Last week a good part of employees have been laid off, and the rest of us transferred to one of the successor companies. Nobody's complaining, those laid off got compensated really really well.

But there has been a lot of talking how everyone feels, many people reminiscing about the "good old days" saying how it all went to shit after we were acquired.

And I'm just listening thinking how we finally have the same opinion about the company that I had since the very start. I absolutely hated the place but couldn't leave due to other circumstances in life. And now after a good few years I'm finally bonding with my (now former) coworkers during their last days. Weird feeling
