Came looking for this comment! I saw this in a programming.dev thread months ago, and it inspired me to save my requests as .sh scripts with cURL commands ๐
It's extra frustrating because I created cosmetic filters for uBlock Origin that allow me to access individual Reddit posts (so I can still read Reddit posts that I find through a search engine) but not any of the feeds so that I can't waste time scrolling. I can't use those on the app.
I've gotten back into the original nerdy interest: reading! Right now, I'm reading The Three Musketeers, and it is so much more entertaining than sitting around and scrolling.
I did a rewrite of my personal website either earlier this year or last year, and it was so addicting! I couldn't stop working on it.
I've been watching it with my kids, and I've been thoroughly enjoying it! Being half Indian myself, it's definitely cool to see more representation than just Guru Pathik (though I did love him)
My wife gets these dresses from a hippie store that look beautiful but are so bad about bleeding dye in the wash. I'd never had it happen before then, but I also used to wash on cool before we had kids.
Because nobody beat me to it, I hope the delivery goes smoothly! But in all seriousness, strong work!
I have a limited data plan, so the only way I can communicate when I'm not on WiFi is by good ol' fashioned text and call.
I forget how bad the inflation is. I had that place in 2023-2024 so not quite a decade, but I'm sure things have gotten worse since then.
I had an apartment that was 1200 a month in Southeast Michigan a few years ago. It was the cheapest two-bedroom around because it was pretty poorly maintained.
We've already got giant ice cubes in the ocean, but they're melting!
This reads like an emojipasta without the emojis.
By some cruel twist of fate, I watched them decommission the nut dispenser leaving us to choose between buying nuts packaged in single-use plastic or not buying nuts. 'Twas a sad day.
This is just like my wife!
Everything else can be looked up on Google
I think that there actually is value to rote and memorization. Adding more knowledge to your head expands the possibilities for what thoughts you're able to have in a way that outsourcing to Google never could. My best example is GPS navigation vs mental mapping. A while ago, I stopped using GPS during my drives, instead spending some time to look over the map and memorize the directions before I set out. Since I started doing this, I have a much clearer mental map of the places I drive through. I can use my mental map to plan efficient outings, since I have a good idea of what places are close together and when/how to take alternate routes to avoid traffic.
The other problem with leaving things to Google is that it makes you less self-reliant and diminishes your ability to unplug from the internet and think and act in the real world. Sure you can use Google Translate, but actually learning a foreign language allows you to participate in conversations, appreciate jokes, and see the world through the lens of the relationships baked into another language (e.g. you see sparks and fireworks as "fire-flowers" because you know the words hibana and hanabi).
Also, analogies and examples form an important underpinning for critical thinking. And the best way to seed a student's mind with examples is to make them read a lot.
Logarithmic scales are notorious for hiding spikes.
You just gotta focus on how sweet it is and try to block out how uncomfortable it is.
After getting my non-alcoholic fatty liver disease under control, I got into a routine of going once in the morning. These days, there's about a 50/50 chance my 2-year-old wakes me up in the morning which throws everything off because it's really uncomfortable to try to go while he watches me with his hands behind his back and hugs me multiple times.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought transistor
My wife loves beef but if she ever stopped eating it, I would call her my Alpha Gal
