And after profusely spitting on it, what do you suggest to replace it with?

Clickbait.

Because that's the thing with these videos: they tear Signal apart, and then... nothing. No alternative proposed. And even when these people have one, it's never something normal humans actually use in any significant number.

Signal isn't perfect, I won't pretend otherwise. But my actual choice isn't between Signal and some hypothetical perfect messenger. It's between Signal and Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram. On that scale, Signal wins, and it's not even close.

And no, my family and friends are not moving to Matrix. Getting them all on Signal was already a nightmare. I'm not going to explain homeservers and Matrix IDs to my relatives. If your alternative requires a tutorial to even register, it's not a replacement, it's a hobby for tech enthusiasts.

So yes, keep the pressure on the Signal Foundation, some of it is deserved. But until a better option actually gains mainstream traction, Signal remains the only realistic way to get regular people out of Meta's and Telegram's data

Honestly, I think you're worrying about the wrong thing. LibreWolf isn't really a "full" browser, it's mostly a set of patches and privacy settings on top of Firefox, while Mozilla does all the heavy lifting on the engine. That's why it updates so fast, and why a small team of volunteers can keep up at all. So the real long-term risk isn't LibreWolf slowing down, it's Mozilla itself. If Firefox ever dies, LW dies with it, there's just no way a handful of people could maintain a browser engine on their own.

That said, the project has been around since 2020 and has never fallen behind so far, so I wouldn't loose sleep over it. And even in the worst case, your profile and extensions are 100% Firefox-compatible, so switching back (or just hardening stock Firefox with a user.js like arkenfox) would be trivial. Worst case scenario, you lose nothing but a bit of convenience.

Also worth saying: if you like LW and want it to stick around, you can help the project in whatever way fits you thé best. Doesn't have to be code, talking about it around you, reporting bugs, or any kind of support goes a long way for a small FOSS team like this one.

French here. This is all escalading quickly. They're planning on sending the army and special forces to secure next saturday's protests. I wouldn't be surprised they use similar forces to enforce potential future curfews. People from center to moderate left to far left are horrified. Authoritarianism at it's best. Seems like a popular flavor all around the world. Very scary

Different angle on this, and it may or may not fit your setup, but it changed things for me.

I've been accumulating audio since the early 2000s. Twenty-some years of ripped CDs, vinyl rips from release groups, random downloads. Several thousand albums. At some point I accepted that tags were never going to be consistent across that pile, because the sources never agreed on anything in the first place: a 1979 vinyl rip tagged by whoever released it, a CD rip from 2004, and a modern FLAC have nothing in common metadata-wise, and no tagger reconciles that without me babysitting it.

So I stopped trying to fix the tags and leaned on the folder structure instead. My tree already carried everything I cared about: genre at the top, then artist, then Artist - Year - Album, with subfolders for live, compilations and singles. That structure took years to build and it's reliable in a way my tags never were.

I run Velvet (mStream fork) as the server for it. It serves the library by folder structure rather than by tag database, so there's nothing to scan, nothing to match, nothing to get wrong. And I vibe-coded Sharesonic, an Android client for it, because I wanted to browse my library the way it's actually organized and share a track, a playlist or an entire folder as a public link without exporting anything. Personal project, it's on GitHub if anyone wants it.

To be clear about what this does and doesn't solve: it doesn't repair your files. If Picard truncated audio on you, that's a real problem and it needs fixing at the file level, not at the player level. Worth checking whether the audio itself is actually shorter or whether it's just the duration metadata disagreeing with the stream, because both look identical from the player side and only one of them is destructive.

The trade-off is real. You lose cross-cutting queries: no "everything from 1977 across all artists", no proper album artist handling for compilations. If that matters, stay on Jellyfin and keep grinding through Picard. If you mostly navigate by "I want to hear that specific album", folders are faster than any tag database.

Honestly, I don't know what people expect either, and I do think there's a fair bit of snobbery and gatekeeping around what this community rightly calls AI slop (and don't get me started on reddit's /r/selfhosted lol).

I've been interested in code from afar, but my life priorities and passions mean learning to code properly has to take a back seat. That said, I have ideas, I'm rigorous, and I can read and learn. So I use Claude to vibe-code a whole bunch of tools that fill a real gap in what already exists for my hobbies and my two jobs. Whether I use AI or not is my responsibility, and every public repo I have carries a disclaimer about AI usage.

For me, the bar should be: does it work, is it documented, and is the AI involvement disclosed clearly ? If yes to all three, I'm curious enough and big enough to review the repo and try it myself.

Mods here have proposed tags and standards to tell apart projects with varying degrees of AI involvement. Yet the systematic backlash makes me hesitant to share tools that could genuinely help some people, spark ideas for others, or maybe even lead to a collaboration with someone skilled enough to build something exceptional for the community. In my case, AI is a very useful tool, but it only ever produces stuff for me alone.

    Which is a shame.

I know I'm late to the party, but I just played No man's sky for the first time some weeks ago. Jeez, I am so hooked. I started going late to bed because of a game for the first time in 20 years.

It'll help me wait for a price drop for elden ring... someday...

    I AM NOT THE DEV

    Hi all,

There are plenty of CalDAV servers out there, but surprisingly very few good self-hosted web interfaces to actually access and manage your calendars.

For the past couple of years I've been following a project called Luna, and I think it deserves a bit more visibility here: https://github.com/Opisek/luna

It can pull calendars from multiple sources (CalDAV, Google, iCal links, etc.) and bring them together in a single interface.

For people like me with a constantly changing, busy, and somewhat chaotic schedule, having everything in one place like this is incredibly useful.

The project is still young, but it's progressing steadily, and the developer has been very patient and responsive whenever I've interacted with him.

Just wanted to share it here and show some support.

PS: I think the developer didn’t really expect anyone to promote the project or draw attention to it yet 🙂 Screenshots will probably come in time. It’s still a young project, so a little patience goes a long way.

Hi, Sorry to ask this here, but I have to start somewhere.

I’ve recently become interested in the original trilogy restorations, and I have to admit I’m a bit lost among all the different versions out there: Silver Screen Edition, 4K77 (80 and 83), D+ Projects, Harmy’s Despecialized, and other fan edits. I honestly don’t know where to begin.

As of now, which version would you recommend for the best quality and the one closest to the original theatrical releases?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide!

    Hi everyone!

I’ve been trying to use HRConvert2, which looks like a fantastic tool for converting all kinds of files. However, I’m struggling to get it working properly with Docker. Specifically, I can’t figure out how to correctly bind volumes to retrieve my converted files. I’m using Portainer to deploy my containers, and while I can get HRConvert2 up and running, the lack of clear documentation for volume mounting is a roadblock for me.

Additionally, it seems HRConvert2 hasn’t been updated in over a year, which makes me a bit hesitant to rely on it long-term.

Does anyone know of a good self-hosted alternative that can handle a wide range of file conversions similar to HRConvert2 ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or insights !

Edit! I’ll answer to past me, because apparently he was blind: https://git.lolcat.ca/lolcat/4get/src/branch/master/docs/docker.md#custom-banners

    Hi all,

I’m running the official Docker image of 4get. The homepage shows the default “4get” banner, while I’ve seen other instances with custom banners.

I’d like to replace it with my own image. Has anyone here figured out the best way to do this with the prebuilt Docker image? Mounting a volume ? Rebuilding the image. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I’m asking here because I can’t contact the maintainer directly. The Git repository is closed for new accounts due to bot attacks. So I hope someone in the community might know.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey everyone!

A couple of years ago, I began my learning journey with a 60x60x120 cm tent and a 125w Kingbrite with Lm301h Mix Epistar 660nm.

Now that I'm moving to a new place with plenty of space, I'm considering upgrading my setup. I'm thinking about either an 80x80x160 or a 100x100x180 tent, and I believe a 240W lamp would suit my needs perfectly.

However, I live in Western Europe, and I noticed that Kingbrite is only available on Alibaba or Aliexpress. When I bought my first board, I ended up paying 80€ customs fees. I also can't find HLG options here.

If anyone in Europe has experience with sourcing good grow lights, I would really appreciate your advice! Thank you! :)

    Hello.

It was some time ago so I'm not sure but I think I tried picodrive to play a Saturn game. It was Shining Force 3 scenario 1.

While the game was running without bugs, it was sloooooow and it wasn't the best experience.

Now that it's 2023, what would be the most optimized emulator to run saturn games at full speed ?

    Thanks for your help.
