Check out ZeroTier for remote access.

To host a website, the greybeard way is to get a decent low-end VPS and reverse proxy it thru that, so your webserver at home connects to the VPS and then the VPS forwards traffic over that connection.

Road Guy Rob's topic is c/mildlyinteresting to me, I like engineering videos but it's not my primary topic or even top 3... but he brings such a love of the craft of indie video production to every one that for me they're an instant watch whenever a new one pops up.

I don't like what Youtube has become and long term I'm trying to slowly disconnect from it (using the Unhook browser extension and other means) but it seems like Rob is doing his best to thread the needle on being able to produce and publish where the eyeballs are while not being corrupted by the platform. For anybody who gives a crap where their "content" comes from, if you have any interest at all in the topic, IMO his channel is worth a sub. Hopefully someday we'll see him on Peertube.

Just imagine what the threadiverse could be today if .world wasn't the instance most noobs land on, regardless of how poisoned they may or may not be from years of corporate social media exposure. The loss of good users who end up there and then think better of the whole idea after a taste of "exactly like reddit, but elsewhere" is incalculable.

Additional context: The Auburn police were the employer of the first officer convicted after Initiative 940 brought the circumstances in which a police officer could be charged with murder in Washington state in line with the other 49 states. Former Auburn officer Jeffrey Nelson was sentenced to 16 years, 8 months in prison for the murder of Jesse Sarey.

"In attendance on Nelson’s side of the courtroom were various family and friends, Auburn Police officers, including Assistant Chief Sam Betz and Cmdr. Cristian Adams, who defended Nelson in a statement to Phelps, and Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus, who did not speak to the judge. According to City of Auburn spokesperson Jonathan Glover, Backus attended to support the Auburn Police Department and City of Auburn staff, of which many officers were in attendance, including Nelson’s wife, Natalie Mount, a current Auburn officer." Nelson had a long history of questionable use of force which went completely unchecked by the Auburn police before Sarey's murder.

The settlement followed revelations during pretrial discovery that state officials had received numerous abuse complaints from boys being held at the facility as well as staff starting in the the 1990s and through the 2000s, yet repeatedly failed to notify law enforcement. Instead, according to court records, agency leaders chose to “deal with a situation such as this internally.”
