So they put this in to every camera and phone and the kids just swap to video. If my job were to think up ways to prevent something i would also try to think of the easiest ways to defeat my proposal just to make sure it’s not a stupid or useless rule.

But let’s be honest, this isn’t about kids. This is about control and spying on your citizens.

So children are just not allowed to exist anymore now? Sexuality just pops into existence at age 18? If one so much as shows a bit of skin they will be instantly executed?

Motherfuckers you cant stop teenagers from being horny, just give up.

Starmer said the plan meant the UK would become the first country in the world to make it impossible for children to take, share or view nude images.

Oh yeah for sure, definitely how it's gonna work out. If history has taught us anything it's that teenagers give up easily and aren't at all persistent and innovative when it comes to being told no. And surely they don't care about porn at all either.

After all, the online safety bill has been a sweeping success. Something to be proud of.

They might get fined $20,000!

I know tech companies want identity verification, but I would love for apple and google to both jointly just tell the UK okay and stop selling phones/geoblock the UK. They would have of back peddle so fast.

Just another way to shove client side scanning down our throats. I hope apple and/or google calls them on their shit. There’s no way to reliably do this at this scale anyway. Laws can be challenged and the process could take years.

If they actually cared about children’s safety they could start with making sure everyone has enough to eat.

Fuck off, it's my phone not yours.

Is this not what they claimed that "android system safety core" app does?

And those of us who can will continue to fight for as much freedom as we can get. This can easily remove whatever app they install

You want to know what's bullshit? If you have an iPhone, go ahead and turn on airplane mode. Take a nude (or download one from the Internet). Now try using the background cut out feature (the one that grabs the subject and makes a transparent .PNG for stickers). You can't. The iPhone processes nudes on-device and won't let you edit them.

My Samsung S25 Ultra did not have this restriction so I was able to object erase on images with nude adults in them. That was, until OneUI 8.5 (latest software update). Now, all those features don't work when you try it on a nude subject. It gives you an error message: "Cannot process this kind of media".

A gooner's dillema? Sure, but as of right now, both android and iOS actively prevent you from using your device by taking away working features under the guise of child protection. Can't even have tasteful nudes of your wife anymore. Linux phone when.

The guy who strapped himself to Mandelson and Streeting definitely has no ulterior motive here.

Don't both operating systems already have parental controls?

It kinda went like "Sir Kier, here's an idea - give the tech Bros a bit of grief. Oh no don't worry, nothing serious that will actually change anything lmao. Just something to give the prols a dopamine hit. Zuck won't need to release the kompromat... you and that hooker in Milton Keynes lol"

That's funny, because that's pretty much what Apple announced yesterday at WWDC26. The update goes public in the Fall (typically mid-September) but anyone who really wants it now can get into the developer beta (free now; used to be $99/year) and install it today. There's a public beta that goes live in July and will trail the second or third developer beta.

What's interesting is that while Apple is supporting all their phones all the way back to the 2019 iPhone 11, Google and Samsung typically don't support phones more than a year or two. They talk a big game until it's time to deliver, then they just... don't. I think her 2022 Galaxy S22 last got an update last year? And now it's EOL. So what if an Android user has a phone that's more than a year or two old? (Point of fact, I have a 2019 Galaxy S10, and it still rocks. Hasn't seen an update in years but it still works.)

So they want to give an unknown entity infinite access to scan through every image on a CHILDS phone on the off chance that said child might have something the state deems inappropriate?

I'm no tech whiz, but isnt this going to end up with a lot of open gaps for antagonists to get hold of every private thing that happens on said phones?

Are these scanned images going to be stored in datacenters and processed off-device or is the program going to use pattern recognition from some ML system to judge the personal infornation of someone who's underage?

What happens when they reach adulthood? Does the program suddenly go "Right, you're an adult now, no more big brother spying on you."

How in any way shape or form does this do anything to protect children?

Is this law impossible or just evil?

Giving the epstein class access to childrens phones sounds like a desaster awaiting to happen

Mmmm big brother keir

Wonder how easy it would be to use the same tech to jail critics of Israel...

The USSR would have loved to have this level of surveillance that even Orwell couldn't dream of.

I am the admin of my devices, fuck off Starmer.

Authoritarian Island makes another blunder.

Seriously what the hell, this clearly isn't about helping kids, it is clearly about something far scarier.

The ultimatum comes a month after Jess Phillips quit her post as safeguarding minister claiming that Starmer had failed to introduce changes to halt the ability of children in the UK to take naked images of themselves.

I don't see the issue with kids being able to take naked photos of themselves? Like I get that the fear is that they will share these with adults exploiting them, but the Online Safety Act already requires platforms to limit sharing images in sensitive contexts (like DMs). You could also just require phones for children to not have cameras, but this isn't actually about children taking nude images of themselves.

“For too long, people have been told that [children sharing explicit images] is simply the price of modern tech – that nothing could be done. That government is powerless. That parents just have to accept it,” he said.

Just don't buy you kid a phone? Or just get them a phone plan without data? Parents are anything but powerless.

“That is why today, I am calling on tech companies operating in this country to introduce vice controls that prevent children from sending and receiving sexually explicit images. Because this is not an impossible challenge.

You solution is literally technologically impossible, though. There does not exist, and likely will never exist, an algorithm that can identify explicit images from non-explicit ones with fault tolerances approaching acceptable.

The announcement has been driven by an explosion in child sexual abuse referrals. The UK’s National Crime Agency receives 1,700 referrals every week. Last year nine in 10 child abuse images were generated by children, many of whom had been tricked or blackmailed by abusers they had met on the internet.

These are social issues for which technology alone cannot solve. Tech won't save us and it can't govern for you, Mr Starmer.

The proposal is designed to sit alongside the Online Safety Act, which requires companies to have processes for removing material that is illegal or harmful to children.

Bullshit, this literally works against the OSA's regime. At least with the OS age stuff happening elsewhere, you don't also have to upload your ID to every website that might host a nipple.

I'm all up for legislation requiring certain standards from system parental controls. My take on the OSA's age verification regime is that it should just be an API that tells apps/websites if parental controls are enabled. But this is about the most blatant trojan horse I've ever seen.

This is WILD. They're not even discussing that "children" may have the same kind of right to privacy as adults.

And by "children" it's everyone under 18. So 17, 16 ,15 yr olds will all get their photos scanned and they will do their best to prevent them from watching porn 🤣

Why does pinko commie Kier Starmer hate property rights?

Google: ok i just go into settings and change 1 to 0 next to 'kiddie porn allowed???' hope that help

The new "Nofone" technology combined with the "Parenting" social network would solve most problems, except the one where governments want to spy on everyone.
