I'm half convinced to trust China more than my own country.

Why is Chinese ai more of a threat? Is the Chinese ai causing mass layoffs at American companies? Is China building ai data centers in our neighborhoods? Is Chinese ai being corn holed into every piece of software im using and making it worse by every metric?

Because it's substantially cheaper and more efficient and thus threatens the wealth and power of the western tech-lord class.

As big a threat as the Americans? Probably not.

Chinese AI is a threat in the sense that unlike the US, China is refusing to barrel head-long into a market bubble collapse that will trigger a second great depression.

Come the fuck on, China, keep up!

I have this bookmarked from March 2025. I've yet to finish it, but wonder if it's biased https://www.journalofdemocracy.org/online-exclusive/why-deepseek-is-so-dangerous/

Okay but why does it have to be Chinese genAI when it could be... and OpenAI is teaming up to spout racism while also spreading the facist machine.

I may not like the Chinese government, but even I know genAIon its own, regardless of who it comes from, is the real issue.

I'd argue that they are a threat.
They're networks of simulated neurons of ever increasing complexity that we understand on a conceptual level at best. But we have no idea how or why they reach any particular conclusion, because we don't program them. They're more grown than built.
And since we don't know how they work we have no reliable way of controlling them. Burning our planet in an effort to bestow ever more capabilities to an intelligence, that we cannot effectively control, that has repeatedly and despite our efforts to the contrary exhibited deceptive and manipulative behaviour, in hopes that it will eventually turn out useful and probably not extinguish us, or at least be profitable to a select few, is an exceptionally foolish endeavour.
So yes, Chinese AI models are a threat. Just like American ones or any other.

Oh wow, you really cracked the code. So we designed the architecture, wrote the training code, picked the datasets, and tuned the hyperparameters, but somehow we have no idea how or why they reach conclusions. That's like building a car and claiming you don't know why it moves when you press the gas. They are not magic mushrooms that we grow either. They are mathematical functions optimized through gradient descent. Every layer and activation function was a deliberate design choice. The control argument is just as weak. We don't fully understand how nuclear reactors work at the quantum level either, yet we still build them with safety mechanisms just fine. And burning our planet for a select few? Give me a break. AI is used in disease research, energy grid optimization, improving weather forecasting, helping disabled people communicate. But sure, let's focus on your Skynet fantasy.

Yes AI models can be threats. Not because they are unknowable eldritch horrors, but because people misuse them, data privacy is messy, and bias gets baked in. Those are real problems, but your we have no idea how they work so they will kill us all take is just the intelligent design equivalent for tech bros.

“When people are worried about surveillance, of course, there are huge dangers there,” Karp said last year on The Axios Show, “but you know, you will have far fewer rights if America’s not in the lead.”

Said the CEO of fucking Palantir, when local AI is the only option to not be surveilled and most of the competitive local models are coming from China because US companies don't publish their models.

Which is weird because every legitimate argument they make against Chinese AI is at least as strong against US AI.

Kinda weird to tell the world you can't be trusted.

They are pushing the "so powerful it is scary" arms race angle. Give us money so our country build God first, see.

The actual fear of "so useless and expensive it is scary how much people are trying to adopt it" doesn't encourage investment.
