French City of Lyon Kicks Out Microsoft

European countries have been growing increasingly wary of relying on Microsoft for critical government and public sector services. Concerns about data privacy, digital sovereignty, and potential governmental surveillance have led many to question the viability of depending on an American tech giant for sensitive infrastructure.

Many worry that dependence on Microsoft could leave them vulnerable to sudden service interruptions or the risk of sensitive data being accessed without consent.

This growing unease has already led Denmark to begin transitioning from Office 365 to LibreOffice, while the German state of Schleswig-Holstein recently abandoned Microsoft Teams and started the shift from Windows to Linux.

And now, another European region is jumping on the "Ditch Microsoft" bandwagon.

Microsoft Software is a No-Go

French City of Lyon Kicks Out MicrosoftA translated version of the announcement by the city of Lyon.

The French city of Lyon has taken a major step toward digital sovereignty by officially starting a move away from Microsoft software. . The city is gradually set to replace Microsoft Office with open source alternatives like ONLYOFFICE and switch from Windows to Linux-based operating systems to reduce dependency on proprietary offerings.

Coinciding with this, they have launched the Territoire Numérique Ouvert (TNO), an open source collaborative platform developed with the Métropole de Lyon and the SITIV.

TNO integrates tools such as Jitsi for video conferencing, Nextcloud paired with ONLYOFFICE for document sharing and co-editing, Zimbra for email, Chamilo for online training, and Matrix for instant messaging.

According to the official statement, TNO is already being used by thousands of employees across several local governments in France. All its services are hosted in regional data centers located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region to ensure full control over public data and meet national digital sovereignty standards.

The project has received €2 million in funding from the Agence Nationale de la Cohésion des Territoires (ANCT).

💬 What do you think of this move? Do you expect more European countries to follow suit?

The US government flaunting its effective tyrannical control of its tech companies are, somewhat ironically, helping the EU get away from that control by being encouraged to swap to Linux and FOSS.

In my tired daze I mistakenly read ONLYOFFICE as OpenOffice and was about to yell No!

The article does well and links to their other article on the OO 9.0 release, which explains why it's probably a smarter choice for this office situation when compared to LibreOffice:

ONLYOFFICE is one of two options that comes to mind when I think of a solid Microsoft Office alternative on Linux, the other being LibreOffice. Both offer a range of useful features and support a wide range of document formats. What sets ONLYOFFICE apart, though, is its focus on collaboration and generally reliable compatibility with Microsoft Office files.

I'm sure this is common knowledge but Lyon's worker uprising in the 19th century is the origin of the word 'sabotage'. The workers were protesting against semi-automated loom weaving machines that used punch cards like primitive computers. When the managers weren't looking the workers would through their shoes (which were called "sabos") into the mechanism to break it.

Just got back from a holiday in Lyon. Super interesting place! I got the impression that the quality of life was good for the locals. Met a bunch of friendly Lyonnaise at a music festival and they were extremely generous sharing their party supplies.

Edit: I believe Lyon workers movement were also originators of slogans like "workers of the world unite"

I’m honestly surprised it took this long for enterprise to openly reject American tech.

The diversification that world markets are going through right now is wonderful tbh. Even at such a small level, we're getting so much great stuff at the grocery store to replace all the American brands my country has all but rejected now. Love seeing it at the enterprise level too, we might see a lot of other countries start having growing tech industries in their regions now.

The US is what happens if you push enshitification on a national scale for too long.

You start with a genuenly good setup. Then you reduce investment, cut corners and reduce spending as much as you can to squeeze out every possible bit of profit.

That works for a while, because you can coast along on prior investments, but at a certain point the game is over and all you are left with is a tide of shit that nobody wants anymore.

To even consider that projects carried mostly by volunteers and underpaid staff making a meager living off donations can rival the products of the world's largest software corporations is laughable, and yet here we are.

And not only because FOSS alternatives have gotten better over the years, but mostly because big CSS projects have tanked in quality.
