C'est rigolo de voir jolla ressortit, je dois encore avoir mon jolla 1 avec sa coque The first One dans un coin !
post
Pre-ordered. Time to put our money where our mouth is.
This looks great, sadly no Australia though =(
I was really hoping you'd missed something and I would find a way to get it here... You didn't ... I didn't
No Canada either, but maybe in the future depending on demand (supposedly).
I understand it is too early to know how the repairability will be of this phone, but how has the repairability been on their previous phones? I'm aware of Fairphone and what I want is basically a Fairphone with Sailfish OS without the limitation of the community ports.
From their FAQ on the product page:
Will there be accessories, like a spare battery and protective case?
Yes, there will be. We’ll make those available on due course the project.
I know it's not a complete answer to your question, but it seems, at least, that the battery will be replaceable.
Thanks! It would be nice to know that the screen and other parts can be replaced with a spare part if needed, but I usually don't have a problem with broken phones so it should be acceptable for me anyway.
I pre-ordered one yesterday and right now it is 1941 pre-orders so it is very likely to be manufactured.
Can't buy in at this point, but I will most probably buy it early next year, hopefully the crowd-buy goes through.
I can't participate in ecosystems run by corrupt Americans (such as Android or iOS). They've been posturing about "freedoms" for so long that they've totally lost understanding of the true meaning of freedom.
I am done with their bullshit.
I'm tempted, because I really like SailfishOS when I used it on an Experia, it's such an intuitive interface for gestures. But I've never spent that much on a phone, and no guarantee it'll work in my neck of the woods.
Glad to see they hit their target and I'll be watching.
Anyone know what bands it supports? Would love to import one to the US if the bands are supported with Mint/Tmo
Edit:
Will the Jolla Phone work outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.? Yes, we will design the cellular band configuration to enable global travelling as much as possible, including e.g. roaming in the U.S. carrier networks.
Can I buy the Jolla Phone if I’m outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.? The initial sales markets are EU, UK, Switzerland and Norway. Entering other markets, such as the U.S. and Canada are to be decided due course based on potential interest from the areas.
We will design the cellular band configuration to enable potential future markets, including major U.S. carrier networks.
I got burned on a previous Jolla crowdfunding project for a Linux tablet. They never delivered the device. They gave partial refunds.
I pre-ordered, because I really like my C2. The new phone should be even better.
I currently have a PinePhonePro and I'm happy that its the real linux experience in phone form factor, I've tried searching but couldn't find a conclusive awnser.
Is sailfish linux in the sense that i can just change compile target and any linux program will work like on the PPP or is it "linux" in the sense that android is linux?
I put my support down, thanks for letting me know, I was looking for something like this
I've never heard about sailfishos before. Are there any phones running it now? Also, forgive my lack of knowledge, but what's stopping people from running it on their samsungs or whatever?
The whole thing does look interesting. Hopefully it picks up so that in 2 or 3 years when i'll be shopping for a replacement to my pixel 8 I'll actually have some good options.
No eSIM, no go for me.
Really considering preordering one. After a car accident, my phone (which was already aging) got damaged and I was thinking on changing it. This might be the one.
Even if the processor is unidentified, my use case for the phone makes it more than enough (I don't play or do anything aside some messagging, phone calls and web browsing).
I wish I wasn’t unemployed right now so I could get this. It looks so cool and I really love SailfishOS. I had the first Jolla phone back then.
The phone looks nice but last time I tried Sailfish OS (like 2-3 years ago) it was extremely limited. It lacked even basic things like multi-language keyboard with autocomplete. You had to pay extra to run Android apps. If it's more usable now it could be an interesting option.
A user configurable "hardware" privacy switch is a contradiction in itself. If it can be controlled by software it can't do what the marketing claims 🤦
Otherwise, Mediatek soc... likely riddled by binary blob drivers and bad mainline kernel support, but lets see.
A user configurable “hardware” privacy switch is a contradiction in itself. If it can be controlled by software it can’t do what the marketing claims 🤦
One reason to have hardware switches is because the manufacturer doesn't want malware that has compromised the OS to be able to bypass it, and from this standpoint
which is a very legitimate position
then that's very much a real objection.
But another reason is because people don't want to rely on using an app on a touchscreen, but to have a convenient way to twiddle the thing without dicking around with the touchscreen, similar to why people complain about some modern cars lacking physical controls. Lets you flip it off in your pocket or whatnot. From that standpoint, it might be a reasonable design. That is, there it isn't "I'm worried about the OS being compromised", but "I just want a convenient way to kill access to software running at an application level to various sources of data".
I do think that it's important to make sure that consumers are not misled as to what guarantees the physical switch provides, though.
I agree that the limitations should be stated more clearly, but even a software configurable switch is desirable. In some apps, the button to turn on the camera is a bit too easy to accidently press for my liking. If someone calls and I'm in my pj's I don't want to accidently enable video.
I want this shipped to Canada.
I want it entire government to transition to (a variant of) these things
Holy shit yes.
Are these things any good?
Maybe. From what I've seen the UI looks pretty good and they advertise good Android app integration. The previous Jolla phone is very old and officially supported Sony phones are a mixed bag according to the forums. This could at least focus efforts again on a modern platform
So when does it get steam and proton?
Maybe some third party will make a back cover that allows for larger batteries and provides missing accessories some of us still want, e.g. headphone jack, IR blaster, etc.
