Move marks president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and support for cleaner-running vehicles

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is repealing the Biden-era federal fuel economy standards, significantly weakening fuel efficiency requirements for tens of millions of new gasoline-powered cars and light trucks.

It marks the US president’s latest effort to dismantle pollution regulations and federal support for cleaner-running vehicles and renewable energy. Burning gasoline is a significant contributor to global heating and transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

“We are officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome, horrible actually, Cafe standards that imposed expensive restrictions,” Trump said in an Oval Office announcement, flanked by top auto executives including the CEOs of Ford and Stellantis. “It put tremendous upward pressure on car prices, combined with the insane electric vehicle mandate.”

Yeah, but car makers will still adhere to the intentional standard, since the intentional market is what they can profit from the most

Depends. I don't think we are exporting a whole lot of SUVs and pickups...especially big body-on-frame SUVs.

CAFE standards already killed the small/midsize car market. Automakers have all their chips in the SUV/CUV segment, because they are in the same category as giant trucks, and thus they improve the average fuel economy.

That, combined with the fact that Trump doesn't do anything for the heck of it. Somebody is gaining (or at least planning to gain) from this (besides him)...makes me think that this will have significant negative impacts for the environment.

I'm not sure there are many body on frame SUVs left.

And the "same category as trucks" has more to do with safety standards. Fuel economy has to do with wheelbase; the way the math works out, it's easier to build a less fuel efficient massive vehicle than a more fuel efficient small one.

Fuel efficiency—the measurement for getting more mileage out of the same amount of gasoline. Congratulations, MAGA voters, you played yourself! When you pick up that new pile of trash made by Ford or Stellantis (and I know you will because they're AMERICAN* cars), I hope you enjoy the higher gas expenses that you voted for.

    * With the extra irony being that many of those "American" brands are owned by Stellantis, which isn't even headquartered anywhere in North America.

They already played themselves by picking the 'American' vehicles. They are all trash and hard to work on.

The Japanese ones are really the only ones built for longevity and ease of maintenance.

Shame SAAB went away. No one beat them on longevity. Volvo comes close, but even they don't have hundreds of cars with 2,000,000 miles on the odometer. SAAB hasn't made a car since 2011 and keeps adding cars to the list.

My buddy has a Volvo and had to spend $200 to replace one of his headlight hubs because it got rainwater in it.

They made it to where you have to hook it up to a Volvo computer because it needs proprietary software to set up with the rest of the car. None of the local mechanics would even touch it and all told us the same reason why.

No candidate is owed your vote, no matter what, no matter who the opposition is. Earn the vote. Dems did this just as much as trump is doing it.

So Obama put these in place, Trump undid them. Biden puts similar in place, Trump undoes them. There sure seems to a lot of undoing for nothing ever being done. There are a lot of shitty Democrats, the U.S. leans far right, but "democrats do nothing" is the shield Trumpers hide behind every day.

If you think every election has just been the same "since Obama", then I'm afraid you've got a narrow view of history. Shit choices in this deeply fucked up country have been part of the electoral system from the start. People have always lamented that neither party gives them a good choice

Not participating hasn't worked to make things better, though. In fact, those in power try to get people not to participate as much as possible. Politicians go after reliable voting blocks, not people who wilt when faced with a morally complex choice. When the Left doesn't show up, they go to the right: because xenophobic assholes sure as hell vote.

And yes: this is all why I agree that electoral politics is terrible. We need direct action, parallel power structures, etc. We need better voting systems and representation, and there are problems so systemic that we need to go beyond reform.

TLDR: Voting isn't going to save us, but not voting may doom us.

This isn't about Biden, it's about the Dems giving us shitty candidates that no one likes and expecting us to just suck it up. They shafted Bernie, and they'll shaft any other true progressive dem for another neolib shill. That doesn't change if people continue voting for them. End of discussion.

While Harris didn't explicitly say it, it was obvious she would continue on climate issues.

And are you even reading what the article is about? Because it seems like you're avoiding it. The article is literally about the fuel efficiency standards that Biden put in, and you are dead set on ignoring that. So I guess it bears repeating: Trump repealing Biden's fuel efficiency standards is what you voted for.

Again, not even talking about the article. The comment is blaming the people who refused to vote for a shit candidate, and you all completely refuse to see the faults of your party. Sure they're better than Republicans, but not by much. Neither party gives a shit about you. This isn't the fault of non voters, it's the fault of the system that's currently in place and it doesn't matter whose in charge, if the rich want it, they're gonna get it. Trump wouldn't be doing this if it didn't benefit his backers. Same way the Dems would.

White liberals try not to blame POC for their own short comings, challenge impossible. Considering Biden already genocided my people, the worst of it's over now. At least the killing has drastically slowed down under trump. Biden would just send more weapons to Israel so y'all can fuck right off. Me on the other hand, I'm doing completely fine, my life hasn't changed one bit since the election. Hope this helps.

You: They need to give appealing positions on issues!

    Them: Here's the positions.

You: It's not about the positions!!

Do you realize the insanity of this? You've basically repeated this 3 times now, ducking and weaving every time. Now it's b b bboth sides same, to which I point you to the article again. Like how is this possible for you to keep saying this.

    You: Both sides same!!

Me: Read the article or even the headline to see how that's not the case.

    You: No! Both sides same!

No wonder you won't acknowledge the positions, the issues being discussed, or the policies literally being overturned.

Lastly, I am informing protest-non-voters what they voted for

This is literally about the article. How you think the article and a thread about the article and all the comments about the article is in fact not about the article is beyond me. You simply don't want to acknowledge the article and the discussion about the article or the facts of the article or the positions of the article because it works against you. So you ignore the article and the facts of the article and the comments of the article and try to divert the discussion of the article to anything but the article.

And again: I am informing protest-non-voters what they voted for. You know, Trump overturning fuel efficiency because that s what the article and the entire thread is about.

Why the fuck is the president rolling back or setting any regulation? That’s what congress is for. Also, for example, they are supposedly handling tariffs and upholding the constitution. Their duties include impeaching and removing from office presidents that violate their oaths and the constitution.

Yes I know we’re in this mess due to the combo of an evil fascist president and a weak corrupt congress. And decades of congress allowing presidential power to escalate.

"I want to destroy the world quicker because think of all the shareholder value we can create along the way"

Its really fucked up man. I'm not a communist at all but I start to understand why people would want to go the complete opposite way of this system.

Its basically "I don't give a fuck how many people die or even if we destroy the entire world in the process I just want to generate more money for the people at the 'top'" and its really sad.

There's absolutely no reason to do this, other than generate more money at the expense of the citizens and the entire planet.
