A 41-page criminal complaint said first responders arrived, claiming the teen "looked to be the size of a 6-8-year-old."

"She was very, very close to death. Again, 35 pounds at 14 years old," Duquaine said.

A helicopter brought the teen to Children's Wisconsin in Wauwatosa. Doctors concerned with organ failure diagnosed her with severe malnourishment.

From the article: Melissa Goodman and Lefever "were extremely obese to the point of being nearly bed-bound, and rarely left the residence." While the 14 year old nearly starved.

If I was a judge, I'd make sure in jail, they'd all get a similar diet as the one they gave that child.

Until they were almost as small.

And this is why you'd never be a judge. You described a punishment that is inherently unconstitutional.

I get it we want to make monsters like this suffer, but that's not basis for a legal system

    Cruelty does not demonstrate righteousness.

Retribution may be born of righteousness but the point is to inflict the same suffering. It may not be righteous but it is just.

    "Just"

An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind.

Restitution works towards material conditions being corrected. Justice requires making things right --conditions, capacities, results.

But revenge is just childish emotional indulgence. Prison is revenge, at its core. I'd like to see victims set right as the main result of sentencing.

Sometimes like with this instance the only thing that can be done is to ensure they do not have the fundamental capacity to inflict such suffering. Take their skulls and let the ravens feast on their corpses, then ensure the victim heals as much as possible.

..An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind..

Or, the one-eyed becme the object lessons in what not do so as to get that eye popped out in the first place.

Examples should be made of those who'd eat themselves into near immobile obesity while their mentally handicapped child is starved to death.

There is no touchy-feelying this one into anything remotely civilized. Which is honestly beside the point..

Regardless of whatever internet arguments we may have out here, once the general population in whatever jail they land in learns what they did, a lost eye may be the least of it.

People that abuse children - don't have a good time in jail.

    Examples should be made

Whelp, if deterrence worked the prisons wouldn't be overflowing. Most murderous bastards are not rational about it.

There is no touchy-feelying this one into anything remotely civilized.

Ah there it is, the rule of law is subject to the Law of the Jungle ethos.

'They weren't civilized, why should I be?' I have explained this issue to toddlers through teens. That is not how it works.

Restitution vs retribution is not touchy-feely FFS. It’s basic ethics. We need more of that in grade school curriculum, along with history.

How many decades does this restitution take to actually make criminally vile behavior stop? I'm no spring chicken and I've been waiting for a long time for a train, it seems, that is just not coming.

Fundamentally the issue is that those wretched parents did not care for the child because the girl was handicapped. That's the kind of spiritual malaise that isn't going to be easily or ethically changed. It's hard-wired animal behavior.

The jungle is still where H. Sapeins lives, for all of the lofty proclamations otherwise. Digital watches, indoor plumbing and microwave ovens are only proof of knowledge, not wisdom.

Not saying don't try.. It's a noble as a grape to do so, but let's not pretend that we are more than we are at this point in our moral development.

So yeah, throw the goddamned book at them.

You are at the wrong station.

Please folks, don't confuse justice with policing, or crime prevention.

Restitution, and in general a 'fixing the wrongs' approach to justice, is not about prevention, it is about clean up and repairs. How that is done is a whole discussion about details, but we are discussing principles at the moment.

Prevention: a healthy neighbourhood with embedded nurses, social workers, and active mental health services could have caught this kind of shit. Functional education system would have caught it. Also: see economics for causes, aka material conditions.

Punishment: well cruelty is the point, isn't it? And you get to participate without guilt.

I don't believe them getting shanked will deter or prevent other child abusers in any way. Different issue.

..a healthy neighbourhood with embedded nurses, social workers, and active mental health services could have caught this kind of shit..

Oh, absolutely, it could have. Here's the rub.. If the child was so bad as to be almost non-verbal, the parents could have accessed support. From someone that's got handicaped family getting support (and it's shit, TBH, but it's there), the reality is there ARE systems in place to help - regardless of how mediocre they are - they can help. OR they could have put the child into foster care or just left the kid at a hospital.

This was criminal negligence and raging indifference to the suffering of a child.

I'd love for a social support structure to be fully funded and everyone is vested in making it work, alas the drive to create such a thing is one that the USA has been pushing aside for decades in pursuit of the next quarterly report on earnings.

The economics of America has to change first. That we are at the end stage of capitalism where it is starting to eat itself, may be the leverage point on which change is built, but I do not know. I think it's going to take a few more decades as those sitting atop the corporate capitalist machine won't go down without a fight.

They're going to have a bad time in jail. Everyone gets the same portion size which to them will be like being starved because it looks like they used to about 17 meals a day. Plus snacks

They'll be wondering what happened to second breakfast.

Just lost 40 ish pounds myself so from 300 to 260, but I'm also tall AF. And even in my darkest depression bed ridden days, I could still get out and buy my cats food! This kinda shit really makes me wonder about our future as a species.

There's a case going on now in my home state, a boy fell off the radar (homeschooled) since 11 years old I believe. In his 30s now, he set his house on fire to escape, he weighed something like 65 pounds I think it said

    https://www.npr.org/2025/03/13/nx-s1-5327122/connecticut-captive-stepmom-house-fire

DCF (CPS) was called when he was a child multiple times, but once they moved him to "homeschooling" he became trapped. Utterly horrible.

It's the same questions comming from our community, how could this happen?

Bruh seriously! Like I skipped school one time and got caught by truincytruancy cops. And I would've gotten away with it if I wasn't wearing tight fitting jeans with my big butt what showed my wallet's outline. How do these fuckers get away with not getting their kids to school for months‽

JFC! Why does it seem it's always obese people doing this‽ Like I'm not spring chicken myself, but I can't imagine starving your own kid! My life was slightly better before watching that report and reading the transcripts.

One accusation from her abusive family, as an excuse for not taking proper care of her, does not make for a credible diagnosis or reason to post this here.

Horrible story which I don't want to read not to weigh myself down too much (as an Autist with empathy in overdrive) so I have to stupidly ask: where's the link to autism, it being posted here? Thanks.

the father told police or paramedics that she "was autistic" and had not eaten in 4-5 days.

"Police also spoke to the victim's teacher from 2019 to 2020, who allegedly said she remembered the victim being "friendly and talkative" and could not recall anything about her being autistic or enrolled in any special education programs. Rather, the teacher said the victim had been "a healthy normal third-grade student, who interacted appropriately with her peers and staff."

this is from a different article I found: https://lawandcrime.com/crime/living-in-a-house-of-horrors-trio-allegedly-starved-14-year-old-who-weighed-just-35-pounds-was-kept-locked-up-in-her-bedroom-with-a-camera-on-her/

It seems the father was making excuses to deflect away from his mistreatment/abuse/neglect.

However, when police interviewed one of Goodman's friends, he recalled a time in August when he was at the home fixing a four-wheeler and the victim came out and asked him about what he was doing. The friend said this "irritated" Goodman, who told her to keep quiet before allegedly making several disturbing comments. From the affidavit:

He heard [Goodman] make comments like, "If she misbehaves, I' m not going to feed her today." [The friend] said he told [Goodman] that he can't do that, and [Goodman] said, "Well I keep her locked up in her bedroom with a camera on her, and that's where she stays." [The friend] said he told [Goodman] that he can't lock a kid in a bedroom, that was abuse. [The friend] indicated that at times when [Goodman] brought [the victim] to his house, [Goodman] would tell [the victim] to "Shut the f— up," and "Sit there and don't say nothing."

Holy gods, why the hell didn't this friend report this fucker at the he knew it was child abuse. He knew the kid was being denied food and kept locked in her room around the clock. I mean, how could you live near where this is happening and not contact the authorities?

I also blame the state. The mother went to prison five years ago and the child was put in the care of the father. Was there no follow up to make sure the kid was at least sent to school?
