Didn't come up in a search of the fdroid app

For someone, who never heard of CoMaps why is it a big deal?
I guess it's not a big deal to someone who wasn't using / aware of OrganicMaps, but it is huge to us who loved OM.
The community is incredibly disappointed of the owners of the project (shareholders, original developers) when the volunteer force of the open-source map application wrote a revealing openletter to the owners.
The owners had been misusing the donations / funding of the project - as well as possibly (honestly, most likely) planning to sell out after years of people giving the project their free time (there is much more to this, but I'll keep it short. See the openletter for more info)
CoMaps is a community fork of OrganicMaps, so it is incredibly exciting that the FOSS volunteers have been able to fork the project, set up and organize everything, and are going forward at this speed!
It truly shows the power of FOSS and how companies can't just take something away from all the people who contributed for free and out of passion.
Hope that answers your question! :)
Edit: added more context.
Really appreciate the detailed answer. I'm not a power user of Organic Maps (mostly using Magic Earth for driving), but I have it installed for over a year now and was not aware of whats going on with it.
As Im a huge fan of FOSS I will definitely give it a try.
Glad I could answer!
Yeah I had no idea either how bad it was until another user on lemmy pointed out the company that has been set up by the owners, and then one day @Sunshine@lemmy.ca posted the open letter in !organicmaps@sopuli.xyz.
And other good news: the community fork developers (who also were trusted and long established contributors of OM) allowed us to make the lemmy community !CoMaps@sopuli.xyz an official community! They participate in that community too!
Hopped aboard, gave it a little poke around as a first time user. Definitely much more friendly user experience compared to OSMand! I was able to pin my home location and set 'avoid highways' very intuitively.
me and my partner have switched to comaps.
Install comaps, export bookmarks from organicMaps and share to comaps. Finally, uninstall organicMaps and done.
it takes 2 minutes and another for settings 👍
This is the first I'm hearing of the CoMaps fork of Organic Maps so here's the FAQs for others wondering, like me
It would be nice if they implemented some sort of backup to self-hosted nextcloud.
I've lost a lot of bookmarks due to corruption or bookmarks being duplicated on organic and it's predecessors. I bookmark all sort of things in my travels. So, a better backup system would be a deciding factor for me, at least.
Currently using OSMAnd... Working great for me but always open to something that offers a benefit I don't currently have...
How does CoMaps differ from above?
OSMAnd works with Android Auto to display on my in-car screen... Does CoMaps??
If you're happy with osmand there's no point to switching IMHO. It's a much more simplified interface, so customization especially compared to the enormous options in osmand are relatively limited.
That being said it does work just as well, judging from the little use I've had.
For a first release, it already comes with a bunch of changes. How many people moved to the fork, is it all of the devs there now?
truth be told, the former branding was much better. It's unfortunate that they needed to resort to have a fork
For those of you having trouble getting this on F-Droid, @mp3@piefed.ca says: "Go to Settings > Include Anti-Features and enable Tethered Network Services for it to show up."
What's better about it compared to Organic Maps? I clicked on some of the links, but it didn't say.
When I click this link Fdroid says "no such app found", and it doesnt appear when I search. What gives?
I had to enable the Tethered Network Services anti-feature in F-Droid for CoMaps to show up.
Any idea why that's needed when Organic Maps doesn't?
My understanding is this is an early fork?
Fdroid official app is still outdae to me. Repo doesn't automatically update itself and so on. I shifted to Droid-ify. Try that
assuming you tried to update the repos, your repo mirror might be outdated
I appreciate CoMaps but for now they don't differ in functionalities at all. Will consider switching in case Organic really enshittifies
This looks to be a fork of organic maps? What is the difference? Or advantages?
Organic Maps leadership became sus, so the community forked.

tl;dr they began to introduce proprietary code and were caught using project funds on personal expenses and vacations.
