The Democrats have retaken control of the US House of Representatives as a “blue wave” of opposition to Donald Trump swept the party’s candidates to victory in congressional districts across the country.

A string of wins in Republican districts across North Carolina, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and New Jersey saw the party pass the 218 threshold needed to win a majority in the 435-member chamber, the minimum goal in achieving its aim of reining in Donald Trump’s presidential power.

I am over the moon -- I literally didn't know if I'd finish the year in a democracy or a budding authoritarian state.

Lots of work to do, lots of problems to solve, and we still have to get through the next two months, but at least we got some adults back in the room.

I'm lucky enough to have seen it unfold live being on the other side of the world. Such a sigh of relief that there is some hope for the US.

There was some news that it could been a tie breaker (probably to the hopes of some far right media) and I was thinking if that were so what the fuck is wrong with the people in that country?

But I can see there is hope and sense still left!

I wish you could see how it is on the ground here; we get hammered day in and day out with propaganda from every direction, and you do too in regard to what you are told about how average Americans are just living and working. Look at the news and we all look like racism-crazed loonies. Yet over the last several months but especially lately, in this red district a gazillion red signs have just quietly disappeared as people have been throwing off the propaganda as the reality has become more and more undeniable, even for the diehards.

I hope we can turn it around. Many of us have been fighting all along, but got no coverage in the billionaire-owned and controlled media. From an American to an Aussie (I think?) I appreciate the grace you're giving us. Thank you.

My initial language gave away where I'm from? Lol...

I'm very happy for you and your people and wish you brighter days ahead. Obviously not every American is a MAGA cap looney but my thoughts were if this midterm wasn't a Democratic landslide, something is seriously wrong. And I'm glad it was.

Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing other users of being bots or paid actors.

Not saying it's an intelligent rule, in fact it's a stupid rule. Like all rules. But it's there.

This is the first time I’ve had any hope in this system in a long time.

I've been so damn cynical about the future of America for two years. I've been downright angry with anyone who expects there to be an election in 2028 because I've been absolutely convinced the Untied States will be a dictatorship by then. For the first time in two years, I think there is a 2028 election to look forward to and the Untied States will go back to normal. I still think there's a possibility of dictatorship but it doesn't seem nearly as likely as it did two days ago. It feels so damn good to unexpectedly feel hope for America again.

The fact that democrats won in such overwhelming numbers shows Trump doesn't have the political power I thought he did. I don't think we're out of the woods yet but things feel so much more likely to turn out good than they felt two days ago

The election took place against the backdrop of Trump’s vice-like grip on the Republican party, which has extended to its representatives in Congress, from whom he has faced scant opposition even while encroaching on what have traditionally been congressional prerogatives.

Republicans hate checks and balances? Voters have said, "Show us your stuff, Democrats!"

He was on Fox News and wasn't denying the election at all. He sounded tired and defeated, saying they were gonna work with Democrats as best they could.

Which, given his previous reactions to losing makes me think he realizes he's boned

I think he’s glitched out halfway between 1) trying to figure out something outrageous enough to say that would seem proportional to the electoral blowout, and 2) his simple-ass programming that defaults to “winners are good”

I hope he has a fucking stroke the next time he goes to honk out a dirt snake

He has to look like he will cooperate or the Epstein connections get fast tracked into prosecutions. And it isn't just Trump - a lot of the billionaire donors are implicated too so he has to delay. It isn't going to stop anything but could buy him some leniency.

Unbelievable how many historically red states voted liberal in this election. Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas...

My kudos to everyone who lives there who made this happen

Edit: Mississippi and Alaska are fighting too

I don't know why people seem to forget that Ohio used to be considered a swing state. They are not "historically red," which is why it always bothered me that Ohio was hopelessly red according to some people.

Living here I can tell you it feels so much more red. Maga bullshit did a number on people and extreme gerrymandering hasn't helped.

I'd long to be purple. Sadly I feel this is an aberration but I'll take the reprieve. Voters here need to wake up permanently and not just vote every so often when it's terrible enough.

I mean, I used to live in Columbus. Didn't feel very red to me, for obvious reasons, but the point is that your viewpoint can easily change based on the slice of Ohio you get to see. My impression in Columbus is you either had people who were clearly blue or people that didn't seem to care. I'm sure the same is true just outside of Columbus if you switch "red" in for "blue."

Still living here sure, blue in cities. But naga turned some places way more red, most certainly formerly blue union areas like around Youngstown, etc. That and the red fervor is just turned up to 10.

I wish we could’ve done a little bit better in Florida. We were so, so close to getting Angie Nixon and Bill Jolly. at least we managed to flip three house seats! By the showing of these results, Florida is pretty purple now, making a pretty big shift back to the left, even if it wasn’t quite big enough.

As a Florida man myself, couldn't agree more. Though honestly it's a bit heartening. All I see everywhere is bumper stickers that say "Trump. Guns. Jesus" and it's nice to know I'm not literally the only blue voter in this state

A few years ago a friend of mine commented that Texas even being questionable (this was when Beto ran against Ted Cruz) was good because it meant the GOP had to spend money in Texas rather than using the state like a bank account to fund races in swing states. Texas turning blue is a massive blow to the national GOP.

Of course now we all need to hammer on our reps to move forward on real progressive legislation, like abolishing ICE and instituting universal healthcare and higher education.
