All high kelvin lights suck, regardless of type.
Also, fucking, just because some fucking fuckwit censored it.
All high kelvin lights suck, regardless of type.

The ironic part is that the lights used to create light that bright used to be huge ridiculous multi-killowatt-range lamps that almost made more heat than light. It's sad that assholes tarnished the good name of the humble LED :(
The plague continues: needlessly censored fucking fuck.
You are allowed to say fuck on the internet. Stop this.
can we please stop acting like the way the light is produced somehow magically makes it worse?
It's the fact that the lamps are ILLEGAL AFTERMARKET MODIFICATIONS that makes them bad. You should not be able to walk into a gas station and buy things that are ILLEGAL to put in your car.
There are plenty of people driving around with LED lights in their cars, you just don't think about it because they meet the legal specifications and thus look identical.
I doubt this is as much of an issue in Europe, but here in the States the headlights of the average pavement princess (large truck that hasn't ever seen a day of work) shines directly into the rearview mirror of a regular height car. Nothing aftermarket at all, just stupidly large vehicles being a nuisance.
I still prefer halogen bulbs because they're so inexpensive to replace, while if your LED goes bad it's gonna be expensive costly.
i see no actual reason why LED lamps should still be more expensive than halogen, that just sounds like companies fleecing you
Because with LED any issue requires a new lamp, the whole thing. With halogen bulbs you can simply replace the bulb or malfunctioning piece and it'll cost significantly less. Had a clip break on an LED and the only fix was a whole new assembly.
again, that's not a fundamental issue, that's shit design to fleece you on money. It's like landlords installing self-contained LED fixtures that lock you out of switching the bulb yourself.
From what i can tell this isn't a problem in europe, there are plenty of replacement LED bulbs available.
We bought a 2024 volvo recently and it comes with LED headlights. They are hilariously accurate with their beam pattern. Bright as fuck everywhere except the oncoming lane, it almost looks like a defect when driving on an empty road.
European cars with LED headlights are fine because they have to actually prove to their government they pass headlight standards. In the US the manufacturer only has to say they did the regulation. European cars mostly chose to only make European approved headlights.
no, because it is worse
perfectly legal stock headlights here in Canada are absolutely blindingly bright
More light = more safety, right?
Or: I can see more = I can drive faster.
You know how old cars with not-that-powerful but totally hazed headlights will blind you? Guess what today's cars are gonna be like a decade from now...
I actually bought special night driving glasses today because of exactly this.
It took me a while to buy something just because of other people's stupid headlights.
special night driving glasses
Do tell! I'm interested if you have any tips!
They are like sunglasses that filter out bright blue / white light but do not darken everything so you can use them at night. They improve contrast and reduce eye fatigue.
Search for: "LED headlight glare reduction glasses" or just "night driving glasses" and you'll see many of these yellow tinted glasses.
I hope they'll do the trick!
Makes sense but damn really feels like they've won now
Yes exactly this, this has been bothering me for so long and I did not want them to win! But in the end I value my healthy and safety more than my sense of justice, I feel like such a sellout.
Oh I know. We don't win this battle by squinting and swerving.
What if one were to, I don’t know, thin out some yellow paint and airbrush it onto a set of LED headlights. Would this do the trick without having to wear glasses?
They make those? I can't dive at all at night because of this shit, are they just called driving glasses?
Edit: just saw you explained it lower, sorry
I no longer wish to make money off this idea, I simply want it to exist
Ship mirrors with built in liquid crystal layers that use the camera in the car to map and then block headlight brightness from the driver.
It takes some electricity but the car has batteries and an alternator.
Anyone other than Tesla or a Elon musk invested entity is allowed to use this idea.
Well, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors have been a thing since the 90's.
Your idea layers onto that, and I'm sure it would require trivial amounts of power (watches have used LCD since the 80's).
I'm pretty sure I've seen LCD used as a dimming method for windows.
Those things fucking suck! Last card I had had one and it took like 30 seconds to a minute to darken. Next car I made sure had the old school flicky doohickey.
I dunno, the one in my 06 Jetta worked really well whereas the one in my 13 Subie doesn’t seem to do anything
We've had them in a few cars. What we've found is that the "perfect" amount of dimming varies from person to person. Same car, I thought the dimming logic wasn't aggressive enough, while my wife thought it was too aggressive (or the reverse, I don't remember). The manual mirror avoids this issue entirely.
Yeah, but the window ones require a lot more power hear. No idea how the physics and math work out.
I think you speak of a feature that some BMWs have where they have a led matrix for headlights and will selectively turn off the ones aimed at oncoming cars while the rest stay on
But I want this defensively, for the car with LEDs installed at old incandescent voltages, the truck that rides 3" from your bumper, and the guy who got replacement bulbs at a cheap garage who didn't adjust them correctly.
BMWs divert all power from turn signals to the LED headlights.
You killed Chekov with this blinding light.
i put aftermarket leds on my truck back in 2012. they are in no way shape or form too bright
