Cease and desist

On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository.

nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I'm seeking legal advice and won't be commenting further on the specifics for now.

Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.

How many days until a fork fully replaces nitter?

    Is he US-based?
Because, if not, does he really need to comply?

(Note: assuming 'he', because I've only ever met one bloke with the handle Zedeus and he was a he... sorry for being obtuse)

This has to be a slap suit right? Surely there's no merit to this?

To me, I could care less. Twitter is nothing but a shell of its former self full of hate and derision now. Who needs it or any spawns.

So, what's the process from now on? Do we need a community of people who have Twitter accounts and repost tweets (or better, the link sources in the case of news etc) to the Fediverse?

I hate the fact that Elon musk took what was a quick easy way for people to get messages out quickly to the public, and then put it behind a login wall to force people to make an account on his site just to get information from organisations. The first thing the site does is serve you far right propaganda when you log in.

And then he saw people creating a way around that and shut that down.

    Fuck Elon Musk.

Everyone seems to be doing this now, too. Needing accounts to access services isn't new, but since apps came along, everyone seems to suddenly need your birth certificate and your home address align with the schedule of your bowel movements.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question but it felt relevant. When dealing with X what is the better strategy, trying to circumvent the BS with tools like nitter or abandoning the platform all together?

I know there is still a critical mass of users, including a lot of institutional accounts, there and stories often break on the platform so anyone migrating to Bluesky or Mastodon would lose access to that, but are there other practical benefits to continued use of X?

    practical benefits

There’s only one: aggregation. Nazi Aggregation.
Decentralized aggression is an unsolved problem. So the yard sold network effect themselves to centralized means of aggregation.

Otherwise decentralized networks would have taken off, if we couldn't sillytalk to politicians & capitalists. Politicians made twitter infamous, not Noah Glass.

Nitter and Xcancel are handy if you already know what you’re looking for but they’re pretty janky and slow. Or broken. Not very good for browsing. I deleted my main after he bought it. And I don’t miss it. Most accounts of any substance either moved to Bluesky or cross post anyway.

Nitter is open source and there are many instances. Good luck, Elon.

Can't wait for nitter.ru and xcancel.ru. Seriously, the code is open-source, someone should spin up an instance outside the epstein jurisdiction.

nitter is outside 14eyes jurisdiction. Github aint. Thus C&D on the FashHub.

That doesn't make sense, the GitHub repo is still up (in fact that's exactly what you're linking to). A DMCA/C&D targeted at github would have the repo disappear immediately until MS lawyers figure it out -- see the youtube-dl situation. Judging from this issue comment C&D was targeted at nitter's author and nitter.net operator, zedeus. The reason he shut down the instance immediately is because the Netherlands, where it is hosted and presumably where he lives, is very much part of the US (and thus epstein class's) sphere of influence. So are all the other countries where third-party instances were hosted, so it's understandable that their hosters are also afraid of C&D's and shut down their instances (e.g. https://nitter.catsarch.com/).

I'm talking about spinning up instances outside that sphere of influence. A person living in Russia won't give a fuck about any letters from Musk so they can host an instance with no fear (at least in that regard). Russia, despite its crackdowns on internet privacy and freedom of speech in many ways, has been a haven for all sorts of cool piracy-adjacent stuff, so this seems quite fitting.

Is it possible to host a website that only works on Onion network? Not sure what is involved and I imagine the domains would still need to be registered somehow, but could that be used to bypass Musk's legal sanctions on these projects on the net?

XCancel still seems to work for now, let's see how long it lasts.

EDIT: Welp, it went down too now.

On Monday 24th August at 8PM EST, we received at letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel.
The service XCancel is stopped until further notice.
We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now.
Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCancel.

I won't visit X at all if there ends up being no alternatives. Not that it really means much, since I don't actively visit the site anyways unless it's a link sent to me or a link I've seen posted on Lemmy.

Don't want to get the project owner in trouble, but I think there is room for simply moving the project's jurisdiction, changing hands, and renaming the project.

Honestly, is anyone of value still on Twitter? Everyone I known has left. I don't think I've ever needed to view something on there in the past few years.
